PETA Injured Chicken Statue

Posted: 26 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Earlier this month, a truck crash in Salem, Oregon, killed hundreds of chicken. To commemorate the sad event, PETA wanted to build a statue:

PETA wanted to build a statue standing more than five feet tall and weighing 250 pounds at the intersection of Commercial and Division streets. It was designed by “The New Yorker” cartoonist Harry Bliss.

The statue “would serve as a reminder not only to livestock haulers to take extra precautions with their live cargo but also to city residents that chickens are among the most abused animals on the planet and the best way to try to prevent crashes like this is to go vegan so that chickens don't have to make the trip to the slaughterhouse in the first place,” PETA spokeswoman Shakira Croce said in a news release.

The city, however, declined the organization's generosity: Link - Thanks Tiffany!

What Your Favorite Ice Cream Says About You

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 09:00 PM PDT

To celebrate the National Ice Cream Month, ice cream purveyor Baskin-Robbins commissioned smell and taste expert (apparently, there is such a guy) Dr. Alan Hirsch to conduct a study on the relationship between ice cream flavors and personality.

"We uncovered quite a few surprising findings when investigating what a person’s favorite ice cream flavor says about their personality," said Dr. Hirsch. "For instance, we found that people who prefer Rainbow Sherbet are more pessimistic than you would think, in spite of the flavor’s bright taste profile, and that those who prefer Rocky Road are actually very good listeners.”

The results:

  • If your favorite flavor is Vanilla, you’re more likely to be impulsive, easily suggestible and an idealist.
  • If your favorite flavor is Chocolate, you’re more likely to be dramatic, lively, charming, flirtatious, seductive and gullible.
  • If your favorite flavor is, Very Berry Strawberry, you’re more likely to be a tolerant, devoted and an introvert.
  • If your favorite flavor is Mint Chocolate Chip, you’re more likely to be argumentative, frugal and cautious.
  • If your favorite flavor is Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, you’re more likely to be ambitious, competitive and a visionary.
  • If your favorite flavor is Pralines ‘n Cream, you’re more likely to be loving, supportive and prefer to avoid the spotlight.
  • If your favorite flavor is Jamoca (i.e. coffee), you’re more likely to be scrupulous, conscientious and a moral perfectionist.
  • If your favorite flavor is Chocolate Chip, you’re more likely to be generous, competent and a go getter.
  • If your favorite flavor is Rainbow Sherbet, you’re more likely to be analytic, decisive and a pessimistic.
  • If your favorite flavor is Rocky Road, you’re more likely to be aggressive, engaging and a good listener.

Bold and Brassy Vintage Napier Jewelry

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 08:00 PM PDT

Napier jewelry was quite fashionable in the mid-20th century. Celebrities from Marilyn Monroe to Mamie Eisenhower wore the avant-garde Napier designs. Now a jewelry collector and a former Napier salesman have collaborated to publish a definitive history of the company. A lot of the jewelry company's popularity can be traced to Frederick W. Rettenmeyer, head designer for the firm from 1907 to 1964.

At work, Rettenmeyer had the space and materials to let his imagination run wild—which is how he came with some of Napier’s most popular pieces such as the company’s first 1950s charm bracelet.

“One of the things a jewelry company does, particularly Napier, is accumulate thousands of pieces like stampings, beads, and stones,” Meoni says. “Because Mr. Rettenmeyer was such a fool of a guy, none of that stuff ever got thrown away. If we had to buy 10 gross of beads, which would be 1,200 to 1,400 beads, and we only used 200 because it was a limited production, the remaining would go into a box and be put up in the attic storage.

“Rettenmeyer’s genius was that he would wander through this storage area every once in a while and grab one of these beads, one of these stampings, and one of these findings. He’d take them to his office and monkey with them until he’d created an interesting piece of jewelry.”

Taylor Mali: What Teachers Make

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 07:00 PM PDT

Taylor Mali is an accomplished teacher and slam poet. He once went to a dinner party where a rude guest expressed deep skepticism about the value and skills of teachers.

"I mean, you're a teacher, Taylor. Come on. Be honest. What do you make?"

And I wish he hadn't done that: asked me to be honest. Because, you see, I have this little policy about honesty and ass-kicking, which is: if you ask for it, then I have to let you have it.

And so he did. Gavin Aung Than illustrated the tale in comic form. You can read the full text at the link below.

As His Résumé, This Game Designer Created 25 Hours of Additional Gameplay for Skyrim

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 05:00 PM PDT

How will you stand out to prospective employers? A carefully-composed résumé will carry you only so far. What you've got to do is demonstrate the quality of your practical work product in an eye-catching manner. That's what Alexander J. Velicky did:

Velicky spent 2,000 hours crafting something that’s part resume, part love letter to the company he wants to work for more than any other, Bethesda. He created a mod called “Falskaar” that adds 25 hours of gameplay to their hit title Skyrim, and created a land mass a third as big as the original massive map. He employed 29 voice actors to record new dialog for his NPCs, and recruited over a 100 total people to help him with Falskaar. Now, he waits.

“The best way to show Bethesda Game Studios that I want a job there and should be hired is to create content that meets the standards of their incredible development team,” he says, very clear about his intentions.

55 People "Pay It Forward" Chain

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT

We don't know what it is about the sugary slice of heaven known as donuts that inspire generosity in humans, but inspire it did. A drive-thru customer at Heav'nly Donuts in Amesbury, Massachusetts, started a "pay it forward" chain that lasted 55 people in a row:

“After that it was like, oh we’re three cars deep, four cars deep, and after about the 15th car I started letting the customers know, ‘Hey, we’re 17 cars in, you can either keep it going or you can take your coffee and go. Either way it’s your choice,’” the clerk said.

According to the clerk, 55 customers rolled through the drive-thru back-to-back, each one paying for the next order.

The chain only broke when they ran out of customers: Link

That's One Awkward Flight: Stranger Fell Asleep on Man's Arm

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 01:00 PM PDT

When the woman sitting next to Steve Cullum on the airplane decided to use his arm as a pillow, he decided to turn lemon into lemonade by making the drooly experience into a little YouTube gold:

Minding my own business on a flight home, when I ended up in an extremely awkward situation. This lady was totally out of it. As soon as she sat down, she started falling asleep, and it only got worse as the flight continued. I tried lifting her up, shaking her, and startling her, but it seemed like nothing was going to work. So, I thought it would be fun to get some of it on video to share with family and friends. Then she finally moved... Only to find someone else for the last part of the flight. Ha!

Shadow Body Art

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 11:00 AM PDT

In her series Cinematography, Tokyo-born artist Maiko Takeda uses something unusual as fashion adornment: shadows.

Maiko wrote:

Cinematography collection questions whether shadows can be transformed into material that adorns the body. When the light shines through each piece, a photograph-like image appears and follows the silhouette of the skin. Shadow is ephemeral yet remains the main part of the work.

Woman Stages Wedding So That Her Dying Father Can Dance with Her

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 10:07 AM PDT

Rachel Wolf wanted to dance with her father at her wedding. But she wasn't engaged and her father was dying of pancreatic cancer. So she staged a wedding in order to have that precious moment:

She sent her father an invitation requesting his presence at a father daughter dance. But her father told ABC News he had no idea what exactly was going to happen. His daughter simply told him to make sure he brought nice pants and a shirt.

With the help of donations from stores, she put on a white wedding dress, met her father at a park and had the traditional dance –  to “Cinderella” by Steven Curtis Chapman — this past Saturday.

ABC Affiliate KXTV recorded the event, but she is not planning to watch the video until her actual wedding.
“It was a fairytale come true for Rachel,” said her mother Jeanine Wolf.

“It just grew into this magnificent event,” the mom said, adding, “She just really loves her dad and he loves her and she just wanted this moment.”

Thor's Hero Shrew

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT

A new species of hero shrew was found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2012 and given the awesome name Thor's hero shrew (Scutisorex thori). How does such a tiny animal deserve such a heroic name? Hero shrews have a superpower -the strongest backbone of any mammal on earth!

Between our rib cage and pelvis, we have five specialised vertebrae called lumbar vertebrae. Allen found that the African hero shrew can have up to 11 lumbar vertebrae, and each is fortified by a unique interlocking arrangement that makes the entire backbone super-strong. This was no news to the locals that lived alongside the species – the Mangbetu people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) named it “hero shrew” long before it was given its scientific name.

In fact, the Mangbetu would show off a parlor trick in which a grown man would stand on a hero shrew and then watch it walk away uninjured. The newly-found hero shrew is the second species of hero shrew, and is even smaller than its cousin. Scientists aren't sure, but think the strong backbone may help the shrew pull tree parts apart to find grubs to eat. Link -via the Presurfer

Seagull Helps Himself to Meal

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 08:30 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Conlett White of Hove, East Sussex, UK, planned to play a prank on his housemate, Richard Hammond. White made a special tuna salad meal for Hammond and left it on the counter. It was "special" because all the food was laced with lots of pepper. Since he couldn't be there to see Hammond's reaction, White rigged a camera to catch the scene. Instead, the camera caught a seagull who came in through the window for a free meal. Now, pepper doesn't bother birds, but after the seagull ate an entire plate of food, he got his payback while trying to escape the kitchen. Link -via Arbroath
