s'more

It's not just the ingredients, but the presentation that makes Charisma Madarang's s'more cocktail appealing. She dipped the rim in chocolate syrup, to which she then added crushed graham crackers. The drink itself consists of s'more flavored vodka, Starbucks Frappucino Chilled Coffee Drink and marshmallows.

Going to Summer Kamp with the KKK

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 02:00 AM PST

The Ku Klux Klan operated a resort called Kool Koast Kamp near Rockport, Texas in the 1920s. It had all the amenities you'd expect of a camp, fishing, swimming, “watermelon parties,” and educational activities. meanwhile, you would be protected by "the fiery cross." And there was plenty of shade to protect one's delicate skinned from the sun. See a brochure for the camp at Slate. Link

Armchair Features Automatic Beer Dispenser

beer

Do you remember GrinOn's magical beer dispenser? The Bottoms Up beer delivery system pushes beer up through a perforated hole on the bottom of the cup. A magnet on the bottom of the cup seals the hole when you're done filling it. Wonderfully awesome, right? But it gets better!

Now GrinOn has built its system into a recliner. Just sit down to watch My Little Pony football. Whenever you set your cup down on the armrest, fresh beer will pump in.

Fake Bishop Tries to Sneak into Vatican Meeting

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 08:00 PM PST

vPope fever has taken over Rome. Vatican City is crowded with cardinals, fans, journalists, tourists, and souvenir sellers awaiting the papal conclave. Schmoozing with the cardinals was a bishop wearing a fedora instead of a skullcap, and a too-short cassock. Ralph Napierski of the Corpus Dei order (which he founded) made it through one layer of security, and even posed for pictures with the other cardinals before being expelled by Swiss Guards.

Napierski was eventually identified by his unusual dress and escorted from the area by Swiss Guards, to the amusement of journalists gathered nearby, reports ANSA. It’s not clear what he intended to do had he gained access to the meeting.

Napierski is known to German church officials as a troublemaker, reports Spiegel Online.

“He does not work with any of our institutions in any way,” a spokesman for the Berlin Catholic diocese told the German newspaper Bild Zeitung, according to Spiegel Online. The spokesman said Napierski is “self-aggrandizing,” writes angry letters and preaches about sex.

Napierski was headed to a private meeting with the other cardinals. There's no word on what his actual goal was. Link

The Spinning Match Table Trick

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 04:00 PM PST

(YouTube link)

It's magic! Or science, actually, because this trick is from Steve Spangler. THe static electricity in the balloon is the key.

When an object has a negative charge, it will repel the electrons of other objects and attract that object’s protons. When the neutrally charged object is light enough, like the match in this case, the negatively charged object will attract the lightweight object. But try attracting a match while it’s laying on a table... it doesn’t work! You need to reduce the amount of other forces acting on the match for this experiment to work, and that’s why you balance the match on the rim of a nickel. Balancing the match enables less surface area to be directly effected by friction, which enables the match to rotate more freely.

The real challenge is to get these things to balance, and then keeping the cat from jumping on the table and ruining it. Link -via Geeks Are Sexy

The Smiley Bird of Paradise

Nobody knows how hard it is to get the attention of the ladies like the Superb Bird-of-Paradise (AKA the Smiley Bird of Paradise for the obvious reason you shall soon see). The New Guinea species has an unusually low population of females, so male birds have developed a peculiar dance to grab the attention of potential mates.

How peculiar? Let's just say it involves a giant smiley face:

Behind the Gates of Chios' Abandoned Leper Colony

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 01:30 PM PST

After housing the lepers of Greece for hundreds of years, the colony on the island of Chios is now a beautiful ruin for explorers.

With a history dating back to the 14th century, this now-abandoned health institution was the first of its kind in Greece. Closed in 1957, the leper colony has now long since fallen into ruin. Doors have come off their hinges, furniture is jumbled up and rusting, and here and there lie the scattered personal effects of the long-departed occupants. When walking around the empty rooms, visitors also need to be wary of falling through the rotting floorboards.

But there are clues to the former grandeur of this community that was built back when they made buildings to last. See more pictures at Environmental Graffiti. Link

Tunnel of Ice Crystals

Photo: Maxim Shemetov

"Even in Siberia there is happiness," Russian writer Anton Chekhov once said, but all I can see is snow. Lots of it. But there's a certain desolate beauty amidst all that coldness, as gallery over at The Atlantic's In Focus with Alan Taylor shows us.

This one above is captioned:

A man walks through a tunnel formed by ice crystals from surrounding permafrost, outside the village of Tomtor in the Oymyakon valley in northeast Russia, on January 28, 2013. The coldest temperatures in the northern hemisphere since the beginning of the 20th century were recorded in the Oymyakon valley, known as the northern "Pole of Cold", reaching a temperature of -67.8 degrees Celsius (-90 degrees Fahrenheit) in 1933.

Famous Animals of New York

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 10:30 AM PST

v

When a unusual animal roams the streets of New York, people pay attention. They follow the beast's progress on the news, and discuss it on social networking sites. Often someone will open a Twitter account on behalf of the creature. It's happened so often that Brooklyn design studio MGMT created a set of arty portraits of the most memorable animals and their stories. Pictured is the Bronx Zoo Cobra, which caused a sensation in 2011.

A female Egyptian Cobra escaped from the Bronx Zoo in March 2011. The cobra, an extremely venomnous snake, instantly caught the attention of New Yorkers and became a Twitter sensation, amassing over 200,00 followers over the span of a few days. The Cobra was finally found 6 days later in another part of the Bronx Zoo.

Fluid Knots

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 10:00 AM PST

I have enough trouble making tying knots with my shoelaces, so this is doubly awesome: researchers at the University of Chicago, Illinois, have created a 3D knot in a fluid.

To investigate, Dustin Kleckner and William Irvine of the University of Chicago, Illinois 3D-printed strips of plastic shaped into a trefoil knot and a Hopf link. Crucially, the strips had a cross section shaped like a wing, or hydrofoil (see picture).

Next, the researchers dragged the knots through water filled with microscopic bubbles. Just as a wing passing through air creates a trailing vortex, the acceleration of the hydrofoils created a knot-shaped vortex that sucked in the bubbles. The result was a knot-shaped flow of moving bubbles – the first fluid knot created in a lab – which the team imaged with lasers.

Jacob Aron of NewScientists has the video clip of the fluid knot: Link

Brainteaser: Bozo's Brush

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 09:30 AM PST

vUncle John's cousin, "Bozo" Newman, was about to board a city bus with his newly purchased, five-foot-long novelty toothbrush, when the bus driver informed him of a city ordinance prohibiting packages more than four feet tall. Bozo only had enough money to take the bus home, so he tried returning the toothbrush -but the store wouldn't take returns. Five minutes later, Bozo was on the bus riding home …with the big toothbrush in one piece.

How'd he do it?

Highlight here for the answer: Bozo asked the store manager for a box that was four feet by three feet, which has a diagonal measure of …five feet. Cool!

Man Fakes Kidnapping to Cover Two-week Absence

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 08:30 AM PST

vRahmell Pettway of Brooklyn, New York, was so afraid of his girlfriend's wrath after he was gone from home for two weeks that he staged his own kidnapping. He was found by a passer-by between two parked cars, tied up with duct tape. Police responded and sent Pettway to a hospital, but they had suspicions as the roll of duct tape was still attached to his wrists.

He initially “couldn’t recall” what had happened, but later told police two men in a light-blue minivan abducted him on Feb. 19 near Bainbridge Street and Reid Avenue.

He claimed his captors covered his eyes and hauled him to parts unknown before dumping him on Macon Street near Malcolm X Boulevard weeks later.

But authorities grew suspicious of his account, and Pettway soon confessed to the hoax, saying he had gone AWOL for a couple of weeks and was terrified of facing his significant other.

Police did not react kindly to the explanation.

“He’s a total moron,” said one law-enforcement source. “It was a pathetic attempt to pull the wool [over] her eyes.”

Pettway was arrested for filing a false report. Link -via Arbroath

Wedding Gown Cake

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 08:00 AM PST

This wedding gown is delicious enough to eat. Literally! The life-sized bridal gown is actually made out of cake:

The six-foot edible bridal gown is made from 17 tiers of sponge cake, 22 kilograms of sugar paste icing, one kilogram of royal icing and hundreds of sugar pearls. It would cater for over 2,000 wedding guests. The cake was created by Donna Millington-Day, dubbed the fairy godmother of wedding cakes. She said she was inspired by her daughter's drawing of a giant wedding dress cake. Rather than dismissing her daughter's idea Donna decided to rise to the challenge and one week later the stunning ivory dress heavily embellished with iced flowers and weighing in at 25 kilos was finished. The wedding dress cake is being unveiled at the National Wedding Show this weekend in Birmingham.
