Why Didn't People Smile in Old Photographs?

Posted: 22 Sep 2013 04:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Remains to Be Seen)

Why are people in Nineteenth Century photos usually grimacing? This newlywed couple looks like they've just been sentenced to hard labor. American author Mark Twain explains their expression:

A photograph is a most important document, and there is nothing more damning to go down to posterity than a silly, foolish smile caught and fixed forever.

Twain wasn't alone. He supported a traditional though fading belief that smiling made you look stupid. The Atlantic cites scholar Nicholas Jeeves:

Twain wasn’t the only believer in the idiocy of the style. Look back at painted portraiture — the tradition photography inherited — and you’ll rarely see a grinning subject. This is, in fact, Jeeves’s subject. “By the 17th century in Europe,“ he writes, “it was a well-established fact that the only people who smiled broadly, in life and in art, were the poor, the lewd, the drunk, the innocent, and the entertainment.”

Indeed, not only were smiles of the middling sortthey breached propriety. In 1703, one French writer lamented “people who raise their upper lip so high… that their teeth are almost entirely visible.” Not only was this discourteous, he asked: Why do it at all? After all, “nature gave us lips to conceal them.”

Portraits represented an ideal. It’s easy to mock them — they were the profile pictures of the aristocracy, in a sort of way — but they were crucial, tied to mortality, a method of preserving a person’s visage and affect. Jeeves puts it well: “The ambition [with portraiture] was not to capture a moment, but a moral certainty.” Subjects never looked exactly like their picture, yet their portraits were how they appeared. Portraits had permanenceYou did not want to commit a permanent faux pas

A Long Time Ago, In a Park Far, Far Away

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 10:00 PM PDT

In this cute illustration, John Schwegel mixes Star Wars and Regular Show. Though not pictured, Benson would obviously be an ever-irritable Obi-Wan Kenobi and Muscle Man would be Lando Calrissian.

I've just learned that on Regular Show, Mark Hamill voices Skips the yeti (Chewbacca). That's all the more reason for a full-length crossover episode.

No, it's not another one of those weird Skittles ads, it's actually the newest piece by artist Olga Shvartsur called Grumpy Cat Tastes The Rainbow. Something tells me Tardar Sauce would be grumpy even if she found the end of the rainbow and got to eat the leprecaun protecting his gold there.

2013 Emmy Predictions

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 08:00 PM PDT

The primetime Emmy Awards will be handed out on Sunday night. Who will win? I don't know! No one here at Neatorama has time to watch TV, much less keep up with that many shows -we spend our time surfing the 'net so you don't have to. So here's a roundup of Emmy predictions from pop culture websites that know more about the subject. Sunday night, we'll find out not only who wins the awards, but which website predicted them best.

Flavorwire’s 2013 Primetime Emmy Picks and Predictions.

Uproxx: Who Will (And Should) Win At The 2013 Emmys.

The Week: Predicting this year's winners

CNN: Who should win vs. who will win.

The Atlantic Wire: Our 2013 Emmys Predictions.

Metacritic: 2013 Emmy Award Predictions from Experts & Users.

The Hollywood Reporter: Who Will Win, Who Should Win (Analysis).

Paste magazine: 2013 Emmy Predictions and Proclamations.

Buzzfeed: Who Will Win (And Who Should Win) At The 2013 Emmys?

The Daily Beast: Who Will Win and Who Should Win (Photos).

Now if we were to take predictions on which website has the best predictions, we might just implode from meta recursion.

Anatomy of a Turtle

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Forget everything you've read in your high school biology text book! THIS is the correct anatomy of a turtle.

Between the carapace (the upper shell) and the plastron (that's the lower shell that encases the belly) of your favorite chelonian (that's fancy Latin word for, you guessed it, turtles) are 32 individual items including hoses, gaskets and screws! Without any digestive system, it's amazing how turtles could poop so much (just take it from my personal experience, turtles poop. A lot. If you don't find poop in your turtle's cage, perhaps its eating said poop.)

Our pal Adam Koford (@apelad) tweeted this out, saying that it'll make a great coloring exercise.

And for all you literalists, relax! It's just the schematics of the cute Polaris Turtle pool cleaner.

Dinosaur Feathers Found in Ancient Amber

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 11:00 AM PDT

More and more evidence of feathered dinosaurs comes to light as scientists look in different places. Paleontologists in Canada began digging through large museum collections of amber searching for tiny pieces of feathers that no one would bother with before.

The researchers combed through thousands of minuscule amber nuggets from nearly 80 million years ago. Among them they found 11 M&M-sized globules with traces of ancient feathers and fuzz. A number resembled modern feathers—some fit for flying and others designed to dive. And unlike fossils, the amber preserved colors too: white, gray, red and brown.

But a few hollow hair-like structures stumped researchers. The unidentifiable filaments weren’t plant fibers, fungus or fur, so the researchers surmise that they are protofeathers (thought to be the evolutionary precursors to feathers).

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 09:00 AM PDT

We said goodbye to summer when school started. Then we said goodbye to summer when Labor Day came and went. Now we say goodbye for the final time, as it becomes official. The autumnal equinox is tomorrow, at 4:44 Eastern time, to be precise. From that point on, the nights will be longer than the days in the Northern Hemisphere. But that also means fun stuff like Halloween, football, colorful trees, Thanksgiving, new winter clothes, and fatty foods!

We brought you another fascinating Milestones book this week, called The Drug Book, in the post From Arsenic to Xanax, 250 Milestones in the History of Drugs.

Eddie Deezen posed the question What Did Barney Rubble Do for a Living?

The Dark Side of Peter Pan came from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader.

The Annals of Improbable Research gave us The Adventures of M.D. Levitt, M.D. A man also known as Dr. Fart.

The Origins of the Periodic Table was from mental_floss magazine.

We also had a list from the Bathroom Reader series in Calculator Words.

Hy Conrad brought us another Whodunit titled All in the Family.

The What Is It game this week had a mystery object that turned out to be a fisherman's surf sinker, also called a breakaway sinker, spider weight, or grapnel sinker. Neatoramanauts had much better answers. Berhard said it was the "matrix bug" that crawled into Neo's belly (in the "only" Matrix movie). That's funny -and worth a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! Another t-shirt goes to DrWhatwho said,

I'm just going to go ahead and state the obvious. It's an electric marshmallow roaster. You poke one marshmallow on each of the four wires and then connect the two leads to your power source. A few seconds later, toasted from the inside out all ready for s'mores.

Congratulations to both! See the answers to all this week's mystery items at the What Is It? blog.

We can all learn a lesson in procrastination from Alex. I offered to write congratulatory posts for a couple of contests we had some time ago, but he graciously said he'd do it. A few weeks later, we found out who won the last Neatorama New T-shirts Giveaway and the Dream Picnic Pin to Win Giveaway. However, the actual winners knew much sooner.

Speaking of giveaways, we're having a Halloween costume contest of sorts, but you don't have to dress up -just send pictures! Send in a picture of a costume you've worn or made for Halloween, even if it was a long time ago, and we'll feature them on the Halloween blog during the month of October. Also, the top costume pictures will win t-shirts from the NeatoShop! It doesn't even have to be a good costume -we'd like to see your funny and/or embarrassing Halloween costumes, too! Send your picture, and the story behind it, to tips@neatorama.com and join the roster of featured costumes that we'll start posting in October (that's only ten days away) on the Halloween blog!

John loves polls, even when there's no question in the post. In South Korean Government Workers Are Given Romance Training, the poll he tacked on shows that y'all think the Neatorama crew should not be given romance training because "it should be harder, not easier, for you to reproduce." I did not even see that poll until this morning.

The (non-giveaway) post with the most comments this week was How to Empty a Swimming Pool, followed by The Dark Side of Peter Pan and Escalator Etiquette

The most popular post was The Dark Side of Peter Pan. Second place goes to Redneck Socks and What Did Barney Rubble Do for a Living? came in third.

The post that people ♥ed most was Dancing Queen of the Bus Stop, with Leonardo Da Vinci’s Incredible Mechanical Lion coming in second, and CCTV Captured Young Men Fixing a Broken Bike Rack was third.

And the most emailed post was A Field Guide to Procrastinators with Ginger Cat vs The Paper Army in second place.

The most Facebook likes went to the post A Field Guide to Procrastinators. That was followed by The Dark Side of Peter Pan, and Hello Kitty: The Contacts got third place.

The most reTweeted post was The Dark Side of Peter Pan.

The big hit on G+ was Custom Car is Driven from the Back Seat, which was shared 605 times. That's outstanding! Thanks to everyone who shared our posts on social media.

There's more to Neatorama than what you see on this main page. Over at the Neatoramanauts Facebook page, you'll see extra stuff like this poster on comma usage. Twaggies has an entire archive of great punny illustrated Tweets. And if you love puns, you'll want to browse the funny t-shirt section of the NeatoShop! Speaking of the NeatoShop, that's where you'll find Halloween costumes, decorations, and accessories to make your party stand out. And don't forget to check out the Halloween blog, which we are in the process of beefing up to help you get ready for a great Halloween!

How Breaking Bad Should End

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Every fan has their theories and flights of fancy about how Breaking Bad should end, or predictions about what will happen in the final episodes, so the Key of Awesome wrote a little song about them. Does it contain spoilers? Possibly, if you are only one or two seasons into the series. Otherwise, it's all speculation and nonsense, wrapped up in a funny song. -via Tastefully Offensive

Pilot Makes Emergency Landing on Downtown Chicago Street, Uses Traffic Signal to Time His Descent

Posted: 22 Sep 2013 06:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Chicago Tribune)

John Pedersen's single engine plane suffered damage while he flew it this morning. He couldn't make it the O'Hare or Midway Airports. So he landed in downtown Chicago on Lake Shore Drive. Pedersen did his best to avoid hitting cars:

Pedersen. who said he had been flying for five years, had decided the drive was his best landing spot. If timed correctly, he figured, he could bring down the plane while traffic was stopped at a red light.

"You pick a landing spot that's not going to jeopardize anybody else," he said.

When the light on East Balbo Avenue turned red, he brought the plane down in the northbound lanes, its nose facing north.

It was a tricky landing, but he stuck it, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said admiringly.

Two cars actually hit the airplane after it landed – and then, mysteriously, sped off, Pedersen said. One can only imagine what their drivers were thinking.

Most cats are terrified of vacuum cleaners, although a few enjoy having their fur fluffed by a vacuum hose. Then there's this strange cat. We saw him do this once before, but this video confirms he's enslaved to this magical device. In other words, it's his favorite toy! -via Tastefully Offensive

Peeing in Theater Leads to SWAT Team Response

Posted: 22 Sep 2013 01:00 PM PDT

An incident at the Bridgeport Village Regal Cinema in Portland, Oregon, involving multiple law enforcement agencies, turned out to be a comedy of errors. During the movie Prisoners, an elderly man stood up and urinated. It is believed he may have been drinking. The urine fell on a teenager sitting in the row in front of him. This upset a nearby woman who started yelling "Gun!" over and over. Theater patrons began running for the exits, and someone called 911, which led to "a massive response from multiple agencies."

Investigators tell FOX 12 they quickly figured out what happened after talking to the 14-year-old boy and his family.

According to police, it was a woman who suffers from PTSD that saw the confrontation, and for some reason screamed the word "gun" multiple times in the middle of the theater, triggering a mass evacuation.

"Obviously with the recent shootings going on, just the mention of the word gun, I find it strange how on edge people seem, and how easily it can turn into a situation when the SWAT team comes out," said Bartlett.

The elderly man was not arrested, and the family chose not to press charges. Police say the man is no longer allowed back into the Regal Cinemas at Bridgeport Village.

No surprise there. The police said the situation served as a good practice for a real emergency, and noted that the response went smoothly. Link -via Arbroath

5 Fascinating Facts: Echidna

Posted: 22 Sep 2013 12:00 PM PDT

Short-beaked echidna. Photo: Jeroen Visser/Shutterstock

Quick: what mammal is covered with spikes, lays eggs, has a four-headed penis, and no nipples?

The answer is the echidna, one of the strangest animals that exist on Earth today. And to celebrate this bit of mammalian weirdness, here are Neatorama's Five Fascinating Facts about Echidnas:

1. Echidnas Can Control Their Spines

Photo: Vmenkov/Wikipedia

Echidnas are covered with fur and spiky spines. These spines are modified hairs, similar to that of the porcupines. There are tiny muscle bundles connected to the base of each spine so the echidna can control the spine's movement and direction.

An echidna erects its spines for protection (like the picture above), to anchor itself against a log, to help it climb, and to help upright itself after it has fallen or placed on its back. It cannot, however, throw or eject its spines as the legend said.

2. Baby Echidnas is Called a Puggle and It's Incredibly Cute!

Photo: Anthony De Zoete-Baker/Australia Zoo - via ZooBorns

A mom echidna lays a single leathery egg in her pouch, then carries it for about ten days before it hatches. The baby echidna, called a puggle, is born hairless and spineless - but with formidable claws.

As the puggle grows, it develops its covering of fur and spines. After two months, its mom would evict it out of the pouch, because, you know, it's not fun carrying something with spiky spines in your pouch.

The cute puggle above is a 30-day-old echidna born in captivity at the Australia Zoo, to proud parents Tippy and Pickle. You can view more pics of the yet-to-be-named puggle over at ZooBorns.

More puggle cuteness: this one named Beau the orphaned echidna is from the Taronga Zoo:

Photo: Ben Gibson/Taronga Zoo - via ZooBorns

3. Echidnas Don't Have Nipples

Female echidnas produce milk, but they have no nipples. Instead, they secrete milk in two small, hairy areas known as aerola patches, which are connected to the milk glands. A baby echidna suckles milk straight out of its mom's skin.

4. Male Echidna has a Four-Headed Penis

Show me the picture of the four-headed echidna penis!

You read that right. Male echidna has a four headed penis. During mating, two of the heads shut down and the other two are used to ejaculate sperms. A male echidna would swap which heads are shut down and which are used to inseminate the female each time the animal copulates. The echidna penis is somewhat prehensile - it can move about when erect (see the video clip below)

Oh, and male echidnas do not use the penis to urinate. It is solely used for mating. Instead both males and females have cloacas.

5. Super Sperm, Assemble!

As if a four-headed penis isn't bizarre enough, there's more to the echidna mating habit. You know you're seeing echidnas mate when you see a train of male echidnas "queueing" to copulate with a single female. In fact, when in heat, a female echidna could mate with up to 11 males one after another. (There's a bit more to this mating prowess - for example, echidnas can also mate underground.)

See also: 30 Strangest Animal Mating Habits

Mating with multiple males present a tremendous competitive pressure on the sperms to fertilize the egg. So echidna sperms do something very unusual: hundreds of individual sperms team up to form giant super-sperm bundles. These sperm bundles can swim much faster than individual sperms, and therefore present an evolutionary advantage.

Bonus Fact: Echidna is Named After the Greek "Mother of Monsters"

Image: Sarapsys/deviantART

Echidnas are weird - they have a mish-mash of reptilian and mammalian features, which was recognized early on by biologists. In 1802, British anatomist Everard Home named the curious animal after the Greek goddess Ekhidna (meaning "she viper") who was half-snake and half-woman. She's the goddes "Mother of Monsters" because most of the monsters in Greek mythology were her offspring.

Bonus Fact: How Does Echidna Taste Like?

In 1792, the ship HMS Bounty*, captained by William Bligh, arrived in Tasmania on its way to Tahiti. Its crew discovered a strange creature with a "beak like a duck." Naturally, they shot one and ate it. The crew noted that "the animal was roasted and found of a delicate flavour." (Source: Echidna: Extraordinary Egg-Laying Mammal by Michael Augee, Brett Gooden, Anne Musser).

*Yes, this is the same ship that's famous for Mutiny on the Bounty in 1789.

In 2007, scientists had feared that a species of Attenborough's long-beaked echidna (named after the famous naturalist Sir David Attenborough) had become extinct in New Guinea. But they were told by hunters that the echidna species was still around. These hunters knew because they had just eaten some and said "the meat was very greasy and extremely tasty."

Men Give up Trying to Look Good at 46, Women Wait until 59

Posted: 22 Sep 2013 11:00 AM PDT

I'm supposed to wait until I'm 46? Why didn't anyone tell me? The Daily Mail reports:

Men lose interest in fashion trends and being 'cool' at the age of 46, a new survey has revealed.

But women put the effort in for a full 13 years longer - focusing on their appearance and general fitness until at least age 59. [...]

A spokesman for Benenden Health, who commissioned the research, said: 'Our survey suggests that maintaining our physical wellbeing into our later years simply becomes a lesser priority - influenced by wanting to relax in comfort and not have to keep up with trends.

'And men appear to "give up" far sooner than women.'

Tinker Bell is certainly a lot better off in the light on the TARDIS than she is in the lantern in Captain Hook's quarters, but then, she'd still be best off inside the box rather than on the top. You certainly don't want to get bonked with a random piece of time energy. Either way, cute artwork Karen Hallion.

One of Life’s Great Lessons – Learn to be Thankful for What You Already Have
byJim Rohn

Is thankfulness a survival skill? Perhaps most of you would respond with, “No, Jim, thankfulness is not key to survival”, and I would tend to agree with you. Most of us have probably already solved the necessary problems of survival, gone beyond that and are now working to achieve our desires. But let me give you this key phrase, “Learn to be thankful for what you already have, while you pursue all that you want.” I believe one of the greatest and perhaps one of the simplest lessons in life we can learn is to be thankful for what we have already received and accomplished.

Both the years and the experiences have brought me here to where I stand today, but it is the thankfulness that opened the windows of opportunities, of blessings, of unique experiences to flow my way.

The New Mentor Package

My gratitude starts with my parents who raised me, gave me an incredible foundation that has lasted me all of these years and continues with the mentors that I've met along the way who absolutely changed and revolutionized my life, my income, my bank account, my future. I am also very thankful for the people, the associations, for the ideas, for the chance to work and labor, and to produce results, all of that has brought me to this place. I'm grateful for it all.

Always start with thanksgiving; be thankful for what you already have and see the miracles that come from this one simple act.

Now thankfulness is just the beginning; next, you've got to challenge yourself to produce. Produce more ideas than you need for yourself so you can share and give your ideas away. That is called fruitfulness and abundance. Here's what I think fruitfulness and abundance mean - to go to work on producing more than you need for yourself so you can begin blessing others, blessing your nation and blessing your enterprise. Once abundance starts to come, once someone becomes incredibly productive, it's amazing what the numbers turn out to be. But to begin this incredible process of blessing, it often starts with the act of thanksgiving and gratitude, being thankful for what you already have and for what you've already done. Begin the act of thanksgiving today and watch the miracles flow your way.

Work on your attitude of gratitude while listening to the rest of Jim Rohn’sThe Weekend Seminar, a series of talks available on JimRohn.com.

Vitamins for the Mind

Books/Library/Reading

“Miss a meal if you have to, but don't miss a book.”

“Some people claim that it is okay to read trashy novels because sometimes you can find something valuable in them. You can also find a crust of bread in a garbage can, if you search long enough, but there is a better way.”

“Everything you need for your better future and success has already been written. And guess what? It's all available. All you have to do is go to the library. And there's probably a library in every neighborhood.”

“Some people read so little they have rickets of the mind.”

“Don't just read the easy stuff. You may entertained by it, but you will never grow from it.”

“The book you don't read won't help.”

“It isn't what the book costs; it's what it will cost if you don't read it.”

Sam Walton’s Rules for Success
by Harvey Mackay

Sam Walton, the legendary founder of Wal-Mart, had 10 rules for running a successful business. They are simple and straightforward, but guess what? I would bet the farm that a great many businesses don't follow them—and they'd be better off if they did.

Winning with Influence

Commit to your business. Believe in it more than anyone does. Passion is at the top of the list of the skills you need to excel. When you have passion, you speak with conviction, act with authority and present with zeal. If you don't have an intense, burning desire for what you are doing, there's no way you'll be able to work the long, hard hours it takes to become successful.

Share profits with your employees. If you treat them as partners, they will treat you as a partner, and together you will perform beyond your wildest dreams. Employees are the life-blood of any good company. Many companies seem to have fancy incentive programs for the big wheels, but smart companies have bonuses and profit-sharing all the way down the line.

Motivate your partners. Money and ownership are not enough. Set high goals, encourage competition and then keep score. Competition makes you better and stronger. You should not only welcome stiff competition, you should actively seek it. You'll never realize your full potential unless you're challenged. Similarly, if you don't set goals to determine where you're going, how will you know when you get there? You must stay focused on your goals above all else. Truly dedicated individuals won't let anything interfere with attaining their goals.

Communicate everything you possibly can to your employees. The more they know, the more they will understand. Information is power, but it must be used to empower your workforce. You will be amazed how a few snippets of information can transform a business into a powerhouse.

Appreciate everything your associates do for the business. In addition to point #2, find ways to let your employees know that you value their contributions. Invite your customers to share their stories of great service and post them for all to see. Catch people doing a good job and let them know you notice. It keeps everyone motivated and does wonders for retention. Remember that your successes result from a group effort.

Celebrate your successes. Find some humor in your failures. Don't take yourself so seriously. Maintain a positive tone, even when things don't go as planned. Although a failure may not be funny at the time, there's always a lesson to be learned. Often, the lesson learned is humility.

Listen to everyone in your company, and figure out ways to get them talking. Many people think that communication means getting others to do what you want them to do. For them, good listening means, "I talk, you listen." These people have forgotten the basic truth about being a good listener: Listening is a two-way process… Yes, you need to be heard. You also need to hear the other person's ideas, questions and objections. If you talk at people instead of with them, they're not buying in—they're caving in.

Exceed your customers' expectations. There's one thing no business has enough of: customers. Take care of the customers you have and they'll take care of you by coming back—and bringing their friends. On the flip side, disappoint customers, and they'll disappoint you—and then disappear.

Control your expenses better than your competition. Wal-Mart tries to help its customers follow this rule. If you aren't already watching pennies, start now.

Swim upstream. If everyone else is doing it one way, there is a good chance you can find your niche by going in the opposite direction. Following the crowd leaves you with very little room to maneuver.

“The philosophy of the rich versus the poor is this: The rich invest their money and spend what is left; the poor spend their money and invest what’s left.” – Jim Rohn

What Your Parents Never Told You About Life in Your 20s

Posted: 23 Sep 2013 08:00 AM PDT

“I did everything I was supposed to do. Why the hell am I here?” — many young people pissed off at their situations.
Survival Tips For College Graduates

How did I end up here?

This is a very common question. Too common. The situation and the question are usually the same. You don’t know what went wrong. You did everything you were supposed to. Yet, you’re not happy.

I’ve covered what to do after college here in great detail because it’s a topic that I take seriously since I’m in that demographic!

Let’s look at some key insights for those of us in our 20s.

The old rules for success in life…

We’re taught to accept the following process from a young age:

  1. Be a good boy or girl in high school.
  2. Get into a reputable school.
  3. Study hard for four years.
  4. Earn a degree.
  5. Find a high paying job.
  6. Find someone you love and get married and live happily ever after.

Well, it turns out that not everything is okay. Following this process won’t lead to happiness.

I take education very seriously and I’m always researching and digging up whatever I can. This article at Forbes about a college education once again opened my eyes.

There are two key stats that really stuck out to me:

Nearly half of grads from four-year colleges are working in jobs that don't require a four-year degree.

In 2011, 1.5 million, or 53.6% of college grads under age 25 were out of work or underemployed.

That’s really depressing. You go to school for four years, spend all of that time, money and energy, only to end up with a gig that didn’t require it.

This then leads to an interesting question…

Are we all screwed in our 20s?

Not at all. I’ve got amazing news for you.

I hope that we all get screwed often in a good way. We’re not screwed though when it comes to life.

I need to share something with you.

These are insights that nobody else will share with you because it’s not good for their bottom line.

Let’s go!

  • Right now is the best time to ever be alive. Look at how easy everything is, how accessible things are, and what you can do (I’m learning Spanish on my phone for free!).
  • You don’t have to start an online business or use the Internet to make money. However, you can exploit the Internet for all of its free tools and resources.
  • You might not get the job you want after college, but this doesn’t mean that college was a waste of time.
  • College is a great opportunity to grow, party, learn, and figure things out.
  • College is not a job making factory. You don’t get handed a job on the way out.
  • You’re not owed anything.
  • You can go back to school or upgrade your skills. If your degree sucks, well, you’ve got to do something about this.
  • You don’t have to attend college. If you can find a high paying gig, work for your family, start a business, or do anything else after high school, you should.
  • You might have to relocate to find work. Maybe you’re just in the wrong town?
  • You can graduate debt free. I did it. If I can do it, anyone can.

If you never read Studenomics again, I hope that you remember these insights.

It’s common to be dead broke after college. This doesn’t mean that your life is over. You’ll get over this hump. You’ll make more money in the future and have a better life. If you stay broke forever, that’s on you. Nobody is stopping you from working.

I already notified you of the extreme work ethic alert. Get out there and work.

What you do to survive and thrive in your 20s?

I have three key tips here: take accountability, work on your own projects, and see the world.

You’ve seriously got to stop feeling sorry for yourself.

The world doesn’t owe you anything. You can’t expect to walk into Google, slap the owner across the face and take their seat. That won’t happen.

You have to do things differently. If whatever you’re doing right now isn’t landing you results, you need to try something else. Stop wasting time!

If you can’t find a job, you can create one.

Nobody is stopping you from working for yourself. What’s your excuse?

This doesn’t have to be full-time or the next Facebook. It can be a small blog, a service you do in your community, or music lessons in your living room.

I highly suggest that you launch something. Anything. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It has just to be out there.

You also really need to see more than just your hometown.

"The world is a book, and those who do not travel only read a page." — Saint Augustine.

You can be your own travel agent and plan a trip. There’s so much to see out there. There’s so much learning to do. You just can’t hang around the same crowd forever. You’ve got to switch it up and see what’s out there.

And before you even yell at me — I know, you’re broke.

That’s no excuse. I have an awesome piece on here about how you can land a teaching gig abroad. Travel doesn’t mean drinking beers on the beach. It can and should involve work. Visiting random churches is great for your grandparents.

If teaching isn’t your thing, there are tons of other jobs you can find abroad. That’s another topic for another day.

"A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles." – Tim Cahill.

That’s what your college won’t tell you about life after college.

Are there any lessons that you had to learn the hard way? Anything you want to share with us?

12 Weird Cheetos Variants

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 05:00 AM PDT

(Photo: James Lee)

Cheetos--they're nature's perfect food. Still, people try to improve nature's design and have succeeded, advancing the culinary wisdom of humanity. Here are 12 unconventional ways to cook and serve Cheetos.

1. Deep fried Cheetos! Tom Pizzica of the Park Slope Chip Shop in Brooklyn deep fries everything, including these Cheetos.

2. Marshmallow treats...flavored with Cheetos! Becky McKay made Rice Krispie treats, but replaced the Rice Krispies with Cheetos.

3. Cheetos donuts! To mark National Donut Day (an important religious holiday), Donut Prince in Burbank, California made donuts with dulce de leche and Flamin' Hot Cheetos. That Cheetos flavor, by the way, has sent people to the hospital.

4. Caramel-coated Cheetos are popularly known as "coyote droppings." I think you can see why. Instructables member Puero made these with corn syrup. Just don't eat one offered to you by a practical joker.

5. Cheetos macarons! The Macaron Parlour on Manhattan is dedicated to that sweet cookie. They've got a vast number of varieties, including one that's flavored with Cheetos.

6. Cheetos ice cream! Although we all use Cheetos as a garnish for ice cream sundaes, they can also go into the ice cream itself! Becky McKay chopped Cheetos and chocolate into her ice cream recipe!

7. Chocolate-covered Cheetos! But Ms. McKay didn't stop there! She also melted chocolate baking bark--that's a sheet of chocolate that breaks easily for baking use. Then she dipped Cheetos in to make the perfect breakfast meal.

8. Chocolate chip Cheetos cookies! Christina_S added whole Cheetos to her favorite double chocolate chip cookie recipe and served them with ice cream.

9. Hot Cheetos-crusted fried mozzarella sticks! Zach Wilkins and Jason Medina made a Tabasco sauce egg wash and used it to bond crushed Hot Cheetos to mozarella sticks. Then they deep fried these delicious little heart attacks.

10. Cheetos grilled cheese sandwiches! Michelle made this classy-looking sandwich with homemade sourdough semolina bread and provolone cheese.

11. Macaroni and cheese Cheetos pie! Kansas City BBQ Source posted a recipe for mac-and-cheese pie that uses Cheetos. Now all you need to add is chocolate syrup.

12. Cheetos quiche! Cheetos are the mark of the refined gourmand. This vegetarian quiche from Pacificlectic uses gruyere cheese and chanterelle--a fancy-shmancy fungus.

Deer Patiently Waits at Crosswalk for the Traffic Signal

The Alien Cult that Hacked British TV

Posted: 23 Sep 2013 10:00 PM PDT

A British TV station was beginning its local newscast on the night of November 25, 1977. In the broadcast studio, nothing unusual happened. But in homes, the video signal of the regular newscast was accompanied by a strange voice that did not make sense.

"This is the voice of Vrillon, a representative of the Ashtar Galactic Command, speaking to you."

It was now ten past five in the evening. With the news report still continuing on the screen, the deep, oscillating voice continued with his message.

"For many years you have seen us as lights in the skies."

None of the evening staff at Southern Television were aware of the intrusion to their signal. International Broadcasting Authority engineers in Croydon, Surrey did not hear the rogue signal, nor was it detected at the main transmitter site in Southampton.

The message from “Vrillon” continued for nearly six minutes as stunned families across South-East England tried to comprehend what they were hearing. Some panicked, believing that aliens really were communicating through the television.

In all the years since that stunt, no one has come forward to take responsibility, and clues point to anyone in particular. But there were a couple of UFO cults gaining followers in the 1970s, and the word Ashtar pops up now and then in their beliefs. Read about the broadcast incident, and the cults it may have referenced, at The Kernel. Link -via Metafilter

How Wolverine Regenerates

Posted: 23 Sep 2013 08:00 PM PDT

Here's a research paper that reveals the mechanism for Wolverine's amazing ability to heal and regenerate after deploying his adamantium claws, or after he is wounded by an enemy. It's because he's part amphibian! Or at least produces an amphibian protein. Here's the abstract:

Wolverine, a mutant from the X-men team, possesses super healing abilities. Wolverine’s healing abilities have striking similarities to that seen in axolotl, an amphibian with the capacity to regenerate amputated limbs. In this study we sought to determine the mechanisms by which Wolverine regenerates. Widentified a novel protein, dubbed Howlett, that is nearly identical to the Amblox protein in axolotl which is known to be responsible for the amphibian’s limb regeneration. siRNA knockdown of the howlett and amblox genes demonstrated decreased replication in Wolverine and axolotl, respectively, and Howlett was found in all Wolverine tissues. Using mass spectrometry and x-ray crystallography, we identified an S2 pocket in the Howlett protein that we postulate contributes to the 5.66-fold increased specific activity observed over Amblox in cleaving a large substrate analogue. Our findings show that Howlett is a major contributor to Wolverine’s incredible regeneration capacity, and further investigation of the signaling  and regulatory mechanisms associated with this novel protein could provide outstanding advances in the field of regenerative medicine.

There's six pages of "science" in the paper. Link (pdf) -via Boing Boing

The Women Who Mapped the Universe And Still Couldn’t Get Any Respect

Posted: 23 Sep 2013 06:00 PM PDT

MIT physics professor Edward Pickering was an early advocate of astrophotography and also had a relatively enlightened (for the time) attitude toward women in science. But he was an outlier in both fields.

In 1881, Edward Charles Pickering, director of the Harvard Observatory, had a problem: the volume of data coming into his observatory was exceeding his staff’s ability to analyze it. He also had doubts about his staff’s competence–especially that of his assistant, who Pickering dubbed inefficient at cataloging. So he did what any scientist of the latter 19th century would have done: he fired his male assistant and replaced him with his maid, Williamina Fleming. Fleming proved so adept at computing and copying that she would work at Harvard for 34 years–eventually managing a large staff of assistants.

So began an era in Harvard Observatory history where women—more than 80 during Pickering’s tenure, from 1877 to his death in 1919— worked for the director, computing and cataloging data. Some of these women would produce significant work on their own; some would even earn a certain level of fame among followers of female scientists. But the majority are remembered not individually but collectively, by the moniker Pickering’s Harem.

A slightly more respectable name for those women was the "Harvard Computers." Find out what they did and how they were rewarded at Smithsonian's Past Imperfect blog. Link

John Lennon's Imagine, Made into a Comic by Pablo Stanley

Posted: 23 Sep 2013 05:00 PM PDT

We've written about Pablo Stanley of Stanley Colors blog before on Neatorama, but the man is on a roll! Great job, Pablo! In this new panel, he illustrated one of the most iconic songs ever recorded, Imagine by John Lennon.

It's probably impossible not to read the cartoon and have the song not pop into your head. It's now probably going to get stuck in your head for the rest of the day, but hey, at least it's a catchy tune!

Sing it with me, "Imagine there's no heaven ..." (Love this song? Did you know that the lyric and concept came from Lennon's wife Yoko Ono? But Lennon said that, "in those days I was more selfish, more macho and omitted to mention her contribution." Read more about Imagine in this article by Eddie Deezen, "Imagine: John Lennon's Signature Song.")

If you wonder who the guy named "Milk" in the fourth from last panel, that's San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in the United States in 1977. Milk was assassinated in 1978, just 11 months after taking office.

The woman named Anna in the third from last panel is Russian journalist, writer, and human rights activist named Anna Politkovskaya. She reported about the Chechen conflict and published several books critical of the current Russian government. In 2006, Politkovskaya was shot and killed in her apartment complex. Her murder remained unsolved until today.

The meaning of Imagine is a hotly debated topic, but Pablo noted in his blog, "This is NOT an anti-religion/atheist propaganda comic. The comic and the song (at least as I understand it) [try] to communicate that no matter your faith, we should all share the world in peace ... As silly as that sounds."

View the original comic over at Stanley's website.

Whodunit: Blue Carbuncle, the Sequel

Posted: 23 Sep 2013 03:00 PM PDT

The following is a Whodunit by Hy Conrad featuring Sherman Oliver Holmes, a mysterious crime solver and great-great-grandson of Sherlock Holmes. Can you solve the crime?

Once a year, on his birthday, Sherman Holmes threw a dinner party. The cream of Capital City's eccentrics would gather in his large, comfortable home, along with neighbors and other friends, to eat and drink and laugh.

At this year's celebration, after everyone else had left, Sherman and his three last guests sat over brandies in his living room, discussing the one inexhaustible topic, the Sherlock Holmes mysteries.

"What exactly is a carbuncle?" Dora Treat asked. Someone had brought up "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle," and the nurse practitioner was curious. "The only carbuncle I know is a skin infection, like a boil."

Buddy Johnson, a jeweler, chuckled. "It's a gemstone, a deep red garnet. Carbuncles are never blue. That was a figment of Conan Doyle's imagination."

Sherman puckered his round face into a frown. "But there is a blue carbuncle. Dr. Watson wouldn't lie about a thing like that."

"Yes, of course," Sam Pickering stammered. Their host seemed so rational in every other respect, it was easy to forget his fixation. "What Buddy meant was there are no other known blue carbuncles, just that one."

"Exactly," Sherman said. "That's why it was so expensive. Would you all like to see it?"

His guests were flabbergasted. "You mean you actually own the blue carbuncle?" asked Sam. "The one from the story?" The newspaper reporter had already done two articles about the unconventional millionaire and he could sense a third one in the making.

"The gem dealer assured me it's the real thing. Come into the library and I'll show you."

The room they walked into looked more like a junk room than a library, with first editions strewn on the chairs along with stacks of old papers and magazines. Sherman took three small boxes down from a shelf. He rummaged through the blue one, flipped through the red one, and finally found what he wanted in the green box.

"Here it is."

From among a pile of receipts and marbles, he pulled out a blue gem, about the size of a pea. Buddy Johnson pulled a jeweler's loop from his pocket and gave it a quick examination.

"It looks like a garnet," he said. "How amazing."

Each guest examined the strange stone, then returned it to their host.

While Dora excused herself to use the powder room, Sherman dropped the carbuncle into the red box and returned all three boxes to the shelf.

"You leave a priceless gem in a simple box?" Sam asked with a disapproving smirk. "With no security?"

Sherman puffed out his chest. "I am all the security it needs."

The guests stayed for another hour, then left at the same time. Normally, Sherman would have gone directly to bed. But some instinct led him back into the library.

He was shocked to see all three boxes lying open on the library table. Sherman went directly to the red box, then to the others. Sure enough, the carbuncle was gone.

He thought back. In the hour following the display of the jewel, each of his guests had wandered off, at least for a minute or two. It would have been chancy, but any one of them could have sneaked back into the library and stolen it.

Sherman was disappointed to think that one of his friends had robbed him. But his disappointment ran deeper. "Did the thief have such little regard for my detecting skills? How insulting! Would they have stolen from my great-great-grandfather and expected to get away with it?"

WHO STOLE THE BLUE CARBUNCLE?

WHAT GAVE THE THIEF AWAY?

4 Surprising Facts About Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte

Posted: 23 Sep 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Shorter days, leaves changing color and colder weather used to be the ways we can tell that fall is coming, but lately there's a new sign: Pumpkin Spice Latte is back at Starbucks.

PSL card over at someecards

Pumpkin Spice Latte, or PSL as it's known to afficionados, is a seasonal drink that Starbucks trots out every fall. Each year, the release becomes more highly anticipated than the previous one, and the cult following of the drink continues to swell. Last year, there were reports shortages of the PSL at some Starbucks locations, which caused a flurry of panicked tweets. The instant version of the popular latte popped up on eBay at double the price ... and promptly sold out. Thankfully, Starbucks was able to ship more of the PSL ingredients to its stores and averted a pumpkin riot.

This year, Starbucks released a secret code that you can whisper to your barista to get the Pumpkin Spice Latte before its official release date of September 3, much to the glee of its fans. But who exactly are those PSL fanatics?

White women in yoga pants, according to Flavorwire and the Interweb:

So. If PSL is your BFF, know this about your favorite drink:

1. Starbucks Has Sold 200 Million Pumpkin Spice Latte Drinks in the Past Decade

You read that right. Starbucks has sold more than 200 million of the PSL. At the basic price $4 and 300 calories for a 12-ounce tall size, that's $800 million dollars and 60 billion calories that we've spent and consumed on the stuff.

2. Vegans Are Hopping Mad

... because it turns out that the PSL can't be made vegan. Turns out, the Pumpkin Spice Latte contains condensed milk. Vegan and Starbucks afficionado Brent Caldwell of Ferndale, Michigan, had even started a Change.org petition to get Starbucks to create a vegan-friendly version:

I am a huge fan of Starbucks. My girlfriend and I will visit our favorite location up to four times a week. We are also both vegan. Normally this is not a tremendous issue at Starbucks because so many drinks can be made with vegan and dairy-free ingredients, which generally just means using soy milk instead of cows milk.

Sadly, in the case of the seasonal Pumpkin Spice Latte, this does not hold true. There is currently no vegan option for this drink mix, which is a total bummer. [...]

Many people are shocked to hear that the mix contains condensed milk because there's no way anyone would be able to tell walking into a store and placing an order. Employees don't even realize it has milk in it!

As of this morning, the petition has garnered over 9,000 signers. If that's not a First World problem, I don't know what is.

3. PSL: The Drink That Almost Wasn't

Ten years ago, Starbucks created the Pumpkin Spice Latte as a concept drink and pitted it against 19 other drinks in a market test ... and people said "meh."

The PSL didn't perform well: it wasn't the worst performer, but it was definitely outshined by chocolate caramel and cinnamon spice drinks. But Peter Dukes, an espresso brand manager at Starbucks and co-creator of the PSL, saw the drink's potential. He stuck to his guns and the rest is history.

4. Now Here Comes the Shocker: the Pumpkin Spice Latte Contains No Real Pumpkin

via That's Nerdalicious

What, exactly, is in the PSL? Starbucks' website said that it is a "handcrafted signature espresso beverage that features freshly steamed milk, rich and creamy pumpkin flavored sauce, and warm seasonal spices such as cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and clove. The beverage is finished with a dollop of whipped cream and Starbucks pumpkin spice topping ..."

Turns out, there is NO actual pumpkin in the Pumpkin Spice Latte. But don't worry, Starbucks isn't going to change a thing. Peter Dukes later said, "If we changed the recipe now, we'd have a revolt."

Undecided about the PSL? Before you go to your local Starbucks and plunk down $4 for a tall (that's Starbucksese for "small"), TV talk show host Jimmy Fallon of Late Night has the pros and cons:

The A.V. Club posted a list of shows in which the lead protagonist is the least interesting of the main characters. It happens all the time, to all kinds of TV shows. The list includes current shows like The Walking Dead and Boardwalk Empire as well as older shows like Barney Miller and The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. I would add Seinfeld and Bewitched and Northern Exposure and …well, it's such a standard fact of TV that TV Tropes calls it the Designated Protagonist Syndrome, featuring the Standardized Leader. (Warning: following links from TV Tropes can cause you to lose the rest of the day.)

I first noticed the trend when The Mary Tyler Moore Show ended and spun off TV shows for all its other characters. Those wacky characters we all loved then became the main character, and they lost their quirkiness by having to corral a whole new cast of wacky characters. Happy Days, which is on the A.V. Club's list, revolved around the generic Richie Cunningham for the first half of its run. The more interesting character Fonzie was the real draw, but when Richie left the show, Fonzie lost his juvenile delinquent status and settled down with the Cunningham family. P.E. teacher Roger Phillips was brought in as the Standardized Leader, but few remember him as such.

When a lead character is played safe, it is because the viewer is expected to see the action through his/her eyes, so writers can't afford to take too many risks lest the viewer find they can no longer identify with the character. That is especially true if the show was built around the generic lead and the producers hope to make the series last a long time.

My guess is that the inspiration for this list is the success of Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones, two shows that defy the trope in a big way. Breaking Bad very deliberately introduced the main character Walter White as someone the audience could identify with, and then took him into frightening territory to make viewers consider how such a transformation could happen. And the show was always meant to be a story that ends. Game of Thrones is truly an ensemble show. Try to recall who was considered to be the lead character in the series' first season. Both shows prove that the audience can handle having the rug pulled out from under them.

What other shows would you add to the list? Link

Patrick Stewart, Leonard Nimoy and Ian McKellen met at Coney Island in New York City. Why? Leonard Nimoy doesn't explain in his Twitter feed, but it's obvious that they're reuniting to pull off one last heist.

I'll bet that William Shatner will appear in the third act.

How the West Was Won

Posted: 23 Sep 2013 05:00 AM PDT

The following is an article from the bookHistory's Lists from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader.

America's great westward expansion took place between 1807 and 1912. It took a lot of people with a lot of gumption to tame the Old West, but those adventuresome types wouldn't have stood a chance without some important enterprises and contraptions.

1. TRADING POSTS

The first explorers of the North American frontier were interested in one thing: making money by hunting the pelts of wild animals. Trading posts gave the fur hunters a market and supplied them with provisions. From the late 1600s to about 1850, posts were built along a vast arc of wilderness from Canada to the northern border of Mexico, mostly on waterways that linked them to the East Coast and the shipping lanes to Europe. Pockets of civilization grew up around the posts, a melting pot of Native Americans, Spaniards, french, Dutch, and English, all bartering with each other.

Significance: Believe it or not, it was fashion. European high style at the time was all about fur -beaver in particular- and North America had a seemingly endless supply.

Story: England's Hudson Bay Company got exclusive trading rights to the watershed of Hudson Bay in Canada in 1670 and constructed the first trading posts on the Western frontier. The posts hired white frontiersmen to trap animals, since the Indians had little interest in doing it. The traders shipped the fur to Europe to rake in huge fortunes. By the late 1700s, rival companies set up trading posts deep in the interior of Canada and points south. By 1808, John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company -with its own frontier posts- dominated the West and made Astor the richest man in America. Many major North American cities began as trading posts, such as Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, New Orleans, Edmonton, Quebec City, Winnipeg, and Montreal.

Demise: The demise of trading posts was due to a shortage of animal furs, caused by overkilling in North America and the introduction of silk as the new stuff of haute couture in Europe.

2. CONESTOGA WAGONS

From the late 1700s to the early 20th century, these famous covered wagons were as common on trails heading west as today's tractor-trailers. The average 21-foot-long, 11-foot-high, 4-foot-wide wagon could carry two tons of cargo. Some freighter wagons with seven-foot-tall wheels were capable of carrying a massive eight tons. Designed like boats, with ends that were higher than the middle, once the wheels were removed the heavily-caulked wagon body could be floated across Western streams. The ride wasn't as smooth on land: pulled by horses, mules or oxen, the Conestoga moved over roads so rough and mountainous that most people preferred to walk alongside. But they kept inside at night for protection against inclement weather and wild animals.

Significance: At the time, the wagon was the only means of transporting heavy cargo to settlers in the remote West, far away from any navigable rivers. Wagon handlers also brought the only news from the outside world, even if it was outdated by the time they got where they were going.

Story: James Logan invented the Conestoga in 1716. As William Penn's commercial representative in the colony of Pennsylvania, he established freight service between Philadelphia and the Conestoga Valley in Lancaster County 60 miles away and named the wagon after its valley destination. It's believed that Logan based the design on army supply trains then used in Europe. In the wagon's heyday, big factories like future carmaker Studebaker in South Bend, Indiana, could turn out a complete wagon in seven minutes. The Fort Smith Wagon Company in Fort Smith, Arkansas, built 10,000 in a single year.

Conestogas were also called "prairie schooners" because they appeared in the distance like sailing vessels with their weather-resistant canopies of white canvas stretched over wooden hoops and billowing in the wind as they moved across the Great Plains. The expectation was that each animal hitched to a wagon could pull a payload equal to its own weight, and thus the modern expression "pull your own weight."

Demise: Railroads and motor vehicles ended the reign of the Conestoga wagon. The last one was manufactured in 1952 at the Springfield Wagon Company in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

3. THE STEAMBOAT

Until the steamboat's arrival on the frontier in 1820, it took skilled oarsman piloting flatboats downstream to get goods to market. Since it was too difficult to paddle back upstream, the flatboats were normally broken up for firewood and the return trip was made by horseback or on foot. The steamboat changed all that.

Significance: Their speed and ability to carry huge cargos made them indispensable to the frontier economy at port cities along the inland waterways. By the mid-1800s, steamboats were seen everywhere on all the rivers to the frontier -the Cumberland, Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, and Mississippi. The month-long trip upriver 700 miles from New Orleans to Louisville in 1820 became a mere jaunt of four and half days by 1854.

Story: On August 22, 1787, John Fitch demonstrated a steam-powered watercraft on the Delaware River before members of the Continental Convention in Philadelphia. He patented the idea and went into the steamship business, carrying passengers and freight in either direction on the Delaware at four times the sped of previous riverboats. But it was Robert Fulton, who usually gets the undeserved credit for the invention, who saw its commercial potential in settling the West. Fulton partnered with wealthy New York politician Robert L. Livingston and inventor Nicholas Roosevelt to begin building large steamboats in 1817 in Pittsburgh. The result was a ship that could make the round-trip to New Orleans on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, setting a speed record of 10 miles per hour downstream and 3 miles per hour upstream.

For the first 30 years of their development, steamboats were an extremely dangerous way to travel: an estimated 500 vessels were lost, causing 4,000 deaths. Accidents were so frequent -due to fire, steam boiler explosions, and running aground- that the average life span of a steamboat was about five years.

Demise: Railroads began taking business away from steamboats in 1870. By 1880, steamships had given way to the 93,000 miles of rail lines that served all corners of the United States.

4. THE TELEGRAPH

The telegraph was an important form of long-distance communication in the Old West. Its birth meant that news from the outside world no longer arrived by horses or riverboats after weeks and months of travel; over telegraph wires strung from wooden posts, communication became almost instantaneous.

Significance: The telegraph was vital to both sides in the Civil War and was used effectively by law enforcement to hunt down desperados in the Old West. By closing the gap between east and west, it also helped unify the nation well into the 20th century.

Story: In 1831, Samuel Morse invented a way of sending messages over a copper wire based on a series of dashes and dots that could be decoded by the receiver. Yet it wasn't until 1844 that he sent the first message over a telegraph line: "What hath God wrought!" Within six years, a group of businessmen in New York organized the New York & Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company. Meanwhile, Ezra Cornell, who would go on to found Cornell University, organized a competing system, the New York & Western Union Telegraph Company in 1856 and the first transcontinental telegraph line came together on October 24, 1861, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The first transcontinental message was sent by Stephen J. Field, chief justice of California, to Abraham Lincoln in Washington, assuring the president that the western states would remain loyal to the Union during the Civil War.

Demise: The telegraph died by inches as telephones steadily gained a foothold in the 20th century. On January 27, 2006, Western Union sent its last telegram.

5. THE RAILROAD

Railroads were the primary means of long-distance transportation from the 1830s to the mid-20th century. As far back as 1836, the idea of a nation-spanning rail line began to catch on -one that would shrink the travel time from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco from months of arduous journey by sea or wagon train to a mere eight days in passenger cars pulled by steam-powered locomotives. But the steep and rocky terrain, especially through the high sierras, seemed insurmountable.

Significance: The speed and safety of trains and their ability to carry huge quantities of cargo at low cost made them preferable to riverboats and wagons. Whereas a Conestoga might make 25 miles in a day, an "iron hose" could pull a train that same distance in less than an hour.

Story: In 1826, John Steven, the "father of American railroads," demonstrated that steam locomotives were feasible by running one on a circular track built at his estate in Hoboken, New Jersey. Small steam railroads sprang up in the East to displace canal boats, but the people who dreamed of a transcontinental railroad would have to wait until the 1860s. President Abraham Lincoln saw the military advantages of such a railroad and as a means to bond the Pacific coast to the Union; he supported California railroad engineer Theodore D. Judah, who convinced some wealthy partners to back a transcontinental railroad as a means of exploiting gold and silver mines in the West. Judah hired 13,000 immigrant workers from China to drive construction of the Central Pacific Railroad over the 10,000-foot high Sierra Nevada Mountains and across the boiling deserts of Nevada and Utah. At Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, the Central Pacific linked up with the Union Pacific line heading west. the driving of a ceremonial "golden spike" memorialized the moment: the creation of the first transcontinental line in North America.

Sherman William George Crush lured a reported 40,000 spectators to a temporary town called Crush in western Texas, to see a publicity stunt: the crash of two trains. On September 15, 1896, Crush sent two six-car trains pulled by steam locomotives racing toward each other from a mile away. The engines collided head-on, causing their boilers to explode and sending shrapnel high into the air. At least three spectators were killed and many were injured.

Demise: Though far from dead, passenger travel was death near-fatal blows by the emergence of air travel and the interstate highway system developed in the 1950s. Freight is still carried by rail, but tracking has become the main way to transport cargo.

6. THE GUN

The liveliest debate over what won the West is about firearms. Did the Colt six-shooter or the Winchester rifle tame the wilderness? Law enforcement officers and peace-loving settlers in the Old West typically owned both -something like the army-issue .45-caliber Colt single-action revolver and the .44-caliber Winchester lever-action rifle. Revolver handguns were standard fare for close-range self-defense, but most experts agree that the Winchester rifle ruled because of its long-range accuracy and firepower.

Significance: To survive in the Old West, especially from 1800 to 1892, you needed a gun. Firearms were necessary for hunting and self-defense, especially in lawless areas -and it was a rite of passage to manhood to become skilled at shooting a gun.

Story: Two men gave their names to guns that ruled the West: Samuel Colt and Oliver Winchester. Colt, the son of a textile factory owner, patented his idea in 1836 and established a factory in Patterson, New Jersey. The Colt handgun became popular after soldiers reported success with it in the war with Mexico in 1846. It was standard fare during the Civil War and quickly took hold in the West, particularly the Colt .45 pistol.

Oliver Winchester improved on someone else's design. In 1848, Walter Hunt patented a "Volition Repeating Rifle" -the forerunner of the rifle made famous as a Union army firearm during the Civil War. One Confederate soldier called it "that damned Yankee rifle that they load on Sunday and shoot all week!"

As a safety measure, people who carried six-shooters loaded five rounds into the cylinder and left the hammer down on an empty chamber. There was no way to fire the gun without first cocking the hammer to advance to the loaded chamber. Gunslingers in the Old West customarily stuffed a rolled-up $5 bill in the empty chamber to pay for their burial if they lost a showdown.

Demise: Law enforcement and time tamped down gun violence in the West, but today there are more guns in more hands than ever.

Constant social media influx is bringing to light a new anxiety condition called FOMO, the fear of missing out. FOMO is prompted by social media users who are away from or unable to check their social network accounts. In this leave of absence, users fear missing out on events, news and important status updates. Last month, a survey conducted by communication management site MyLife.com revealed 56% of the 2,084 adults sampled on their social media use claimed they do have FOMO.

The study’s social media statistics explain why people may be feeling more overwhelmed and anxious. Of users between the ages of 18 and 34, 61% said they are juggling multiple accounts (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest, to name a few.)  An average of 31 minutes or more was found to be the amount of time spent checking these accounts daily. This also includes personal email. The study found people now average 3.1 email address accounts, up from 2.6 accounts last year.

Is social media addiction the issue?

Think Big, Act Tall, Have It All

Posted: 23 Sep 2013 07:00 AM PDT

You might feel overwhelmed by the amount of debt you have or by the amount of money you would need to achieve your dreams. Many people daydream about achieving their financial goals, yet see them as ultimately unachievable. I have one secret for you. That mountain is just a mound of mud and you could probably get over it barefoot to turn that daydream into a reality.

I've just outlined a few of the basics below to get you started and raring to go:

Set out your goals

What is it that you want to achieve financially? Removing your debt? Having enough money to launch a new business? Having enough to purchase that property you love? Write it down for a clear, distinct vision. That way, whenever distractions threaten to de-rail things, what you want will still be a clear part of your future.

Take small steps

Now that you've clarified exactly what you want, research and list what you need to do to get there. The chances are there are numerous steps that you need to take. Don't be overcome. Just take it one small step at a time. Open those savings accounts, find extra work for more disposable income, start saving small amounts or start payments on that debt. If you're in a tight spot, personal loans from trustworthy vendors can help to provide immediate relief until you are back on your feet.

Stay organised

By now, you should have a realistic timeline to success. The best way to ensure you stay on track is to simply keep organised even if you have to seek help from alternative sources, such as direct lenders, not brokers, such as Everyday Loans.

Effectively manage and work toward your goals by staying on top of repayments for your everyday loans, your credit cards and any other financial obligations you may have. Responsible borrowing and responsible lending are key in such situations. This in turn will build up your financial credit and slowly get you to where you want to be.

Have patience

This is the most important aspect of all. Without patience, it is easy to believe it may never happen. Sometimes life gets in the way, puts in obstacles and your goals may end up taking longer to achieve than you initially thought. Believe they will still happen and keep on working your way there and once you have, there will be no stopping you.

Reap the rewards

You've done it! Enjoy it! It's fine to feel a bit smug!

Hi! You've won a Nobel!

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 11:00 PM PDT

Imagine getting a call saying you've won a Nobel Prize! It could happen -if you are among the distinguished scientists, economists, doctors, authors, and peacemakers who were nominated. And some of those people are waiting for the call. For others, it's a complete surprise. The Nobel Committees hava an exact schedule for selecting the winners, starting the second week of October, with a different discipline announced each day. The Academy vote is at 9:30 AM (Swedish time), the call happens at 11:15, and the public announcement comes at noon (the schedules vary, but are always planned). If the winner cannot be notified by phone, the announcement goes on anyway, and the press will let the winner know. Professor Steffan Normark, permanent secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, makes the calls for chemistry, physics, and economics.

…Normark has a strategy for getting his phone calls past secretaries. "We tell them this is a very important call. A. Very. Important. Call." He enunciates each word carefully before moving on to the clincher. "From Stockholm." So far, he has always been put through.

Normark says the best calls are a total surprise for the winner. And sometimes it's hard to track a winner down. But the Nobel Prize is special, even compared to honors that carry more money with them. Read more about how it's done at Intelligent Life. Link  -via Digg

The Last Volkswagen Van Will Soon Roll off the Assembly Line

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 10:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Chris Sampson)

The Volkswagen Type 2, which has been in production since 1949, has reached the end of the road. The last factory that manufactures them is shutting down that product line:

The last Volkswagen "hippie bus" is due to roll off an an assembly line in Brazil on Dec. 31.

It seems the van that became known as the transportation of choice for counter-culture folks in the '60s can't be made with the air bags and other safety equipment that "the man" wants it to have.

So Volkswagen is ending production in the last place where the van's still made; a factory near Sao Paulo.

Volkswagen Brazil is turning the final few into special editions. They'll come in sort of robin's egg blue with white trim. Inside: "Special vinyl upholstery" with those colors and blue curtains on the windows.

Police Car Wrapped in Plastic: Art or Vandalism or Public Disobedience?

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 09:00 PM PDT

Photo: Die Kunstagentin/Facebook - via Nerdcore

Madrid-based Spanish street artist SpY went to Cologne, Germany, and decided to help the local police in keeping their car in mint condition. But is it art? What happens if there's a police emergency and the cop came out to see their car all wrapped up in plastic film? And how come the police drive such a nice BMW?

Photo via Ekosystem

Actually SpY has done something like this before, wrapping a police car with police tape, so we're not sure whether this whole thing is real or staged.

Florida Man Tries to Pay Water Bill with Cocaine

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 08:00 PM PDT

Today's tale of adventure for Florida Man, the world's worst superhero, takes us to the town of Deltona. It was there that our intrepid friend tried to pay his water bill with an envelope of crack cocaine:

Employees at the Deltona Water office on Enterprise Road were evacuated this morning, Sept. 23, after a customer handed a cashier an envelope with a white powder in it.

At 9:56 a.m., the water-department employees called the Volusia County Sheriff's Office to check out the suspicious substance. [...]

The powder was tested.

"Interestingly enough, it was crack cocaine," Haught said.

The Sheriff's Office will continue to investigate.

Hogwarts Envelope Cookies Have Acceptance Letters Inside

Don't eat that envelope! Tina of Sugar Bean Bakers put something precious inside. She baked them for a friend who will feel very excited, then disappointed when she realizes that they're not real. So it's cute, but also a vicious prank.

Conduct Us

Improv Everywhere gave passersby a chance to conduct a symphony orchestra.

For our latest mission, we put a Carnegie Hall orchestra in the middle of New York City and placed an empty podium in front of the musicians with a sign that read, “Conduct Us.” Random New Yorkers who accepted the challenge were given the opportunity to conduct this world-class orchestra. The orchestra responded to the conductors, altering their tempo and performance accordingly. This project was a collaboration with Carnegie Hall and Ensemble ACJW.

A good time was had by all. For more on this caper, see the blog post about it. Link  -via Tastefully Offensive

Don't Mess with Samurai Monkey

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 04:00 PM PDT

Actually, samurai monkey is part of Los Angeles-based photographer Hiroshi Watanabe's latest art series, titled Suo Sarumawashi, which is centered around the ancient Japanese artform of Sarumawashi or Monkey Dancing.

Sarumawashi, as explained by the Kopeikin Gallery which is hosting Watanabe's exhibition, is a 1,000-year-old Japanese tradition that started as a religious ritual to protect the horses of warriors. The acrobatic stunts, dances, and comedic skits performed by trained macaque monkeys later developed into festival and imperial court entertainment, alongside Noh and Kabuki, as well as street performance.

Despite its popularity, sarumawashi almost became extinct in the 1970s. The urbanization of Japan and the rise of automobiles on Japan's crowded streets had sidelined sarumawashi, until a group of Japanese artists founded an organization dedicated to preserving the artform. Today, the group regularly tours Japan to perform.

In this interview with Lenscratch, Watanabe explained how he was fascinated by the range of emotions expressed by animals during a recent visit to the zoo, which reminded him of his childhood experience watching the street performance of sarumawashi in Japan. He wrote to the Suo Sarumawashi Association and asked them for permission to photograph the monkeys:

For the camera, the monkeys stood up straight and struck the poses for the plays over and over. But after a while, they started to fall back to their own inner-self, revealing their true personalities, but it only lasted until the trainers said something, and the monkeys immediately corrected the posture.

There's always one trainer to one monkey. In other words, they work as a couple and trainers do not handle more than one monkey at any given time. They spend many hours practicing and appear on the stage together every day. This one to one relationship last until the day when the monkey retires (monkeys retire after several years of performing and afterwards live and are taken care of among other monkeys till natural death). They rely on each other and their bondage must be strong.

Take a look at more of Watanabe's fascinating photographs of Japan's dancing monkeys over at Kopeikin Gallery. (All photoraphs: Hiroshi Watanabe)

A Fan Art Tribute to Jim Henson

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Muppet master Jim Henson would have turned 77 years old today, if he hadn't died in 1990. To remember the life of the man who gave us so much entertainment, mental_floss has posted a collection of fan art featuring Henson himself. Of course, most of the artworks also feature Henson's creations, including his alter ego Kermit the frog. Shown here is How Jim Did It, by DeviantART member PHUZface1, with a theory of how "The Rainbow Connection" scene was accomplished. See the rest in a list compiled by Jill harness at mental_floss. 5 Surprising Things That Have Cow Parts in Them

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Image: Dudarev Mikhail/Shutterstock

So, you're a vegan and you're mad that you can't drink Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte. Well, maybe you want to skip this post because your day ain't going to get much better. You see, almost *everything* in the world contains something made from animal parts and by-products.

Don't believe us? Here are 5 things in the world that you wouldn't believe are made from or contain animal by-products or use them in the manufacturing process:

1. Car Tires

Yes, tires are made of rubber, which are plant products but the wheel on the bus goes round and round with a little help from stearic acid.

Stearic acid is a fatty acid with many industrial applications - and when we say many, we mean a bajillion. This chemical compound is used as a surfactant and softening agent. It is found in soaps, cosmetics, detergents, lubricants, candles, food, and even fireworks. Car tires manufacturers use stearic acid as an additive to help "cure" the rubber in the tires and make them strong enough to hold their shape while under steady friction yet flexible enough to grip the road.

Oh, and that "stearic" in stearic acid is derived from the Greek word "stear" which means tallow, a rendered form of beef or mutton fat.

2. Drywall

Unless you live in a brick or mud house, then chances are, your wall is made of drywall or sheetrock. These are gypsum plaster sheets used to make interior walls and ceilings. Then, unless you live in an unfinished garage, chances are your walls are painted. Well, both drywall and paint contain animal by-products.

Drywall is made by creating a slurry of gypsum with additives such as starch, paper pulp and fatty acids like stearic acid (ta-da!) and oleic acid (also made from animal fat) as emulsifier and thickener.

3. Paint

Many brands of paint (even latex-based paint) contain a binder called casein, a protein found in cow milk. Never heard of casein? You may not know it, but you are familiar with casein: in its coagulated form, casein is called cheese.

4. Sugar

Good ol' white sugar isn't white to begin with. Rather, large sugar manufacturers use a filter made from bone char - basically charred ash of animal bones (mostly from cattle) - to decolorize sugar cane to the desired white form.

Well, how about if I just use brown sugar, you say. Turns out most brown sugar is just white sugar with molasses added as brown colorant.

5. Asphalt

Yes, that black stuff used to pave roads and parking lots contain glycerin, a release agent that prevents it from sticking to the containers, as well as other animal by-product based additives to help the ease of mixing and paving as well as control rutting and cracking.

World Gurning Champ Retains Title

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 10:00 AM PDT

A gurn is a funny distorted face, and gurning is what we often refer to as "making faces." In England there is a tradition of gurning competitions, the most famous being the contest at the Egremont Crab Fair in Cumbria. That competition, held this past Saturday, is considered the World Championship of gurning. Tommy Mattinson held off all comers to win the title and retain his crown as the world's best gurner for the 15th straight year.

Mr Mattinson, from Aspatria, also holds the Guinness World Record for gurning, and has beaten his father's ten-time record as world champion.

In 2008, he gurned in front of the Queen during a visit to Cumbria.

He described his expression as "a cross between an alien and a wolf man".

"That said, this year in particular I really, really tried hard," he said.

"I put in a lot of effort, and now have a sore head and all the muscles in my neck ache."

The Settlers of Catan Cookbook

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 08:30 AM PDT

Friend of the blog Chris-Rachael Oseland has published a new cookbook! You've probably already seen many of her geektastic foods, such as Transformers pull-apart bread, the Captain America shield breakfast and 1-up mushroom pizza rolls. When it comes to geeky food, Chris-Rachael is deservedly known as the Kitchen Overlord.

Chris-Rachael's newest book, Wood for Sheep: The Unauthorized Settlers Cookbook, is inspired by the game The Settlers of Catan. It's fun, but it's also practical. Chris-Rachael uses the game board layout to provide a variety of options for people with different dietary needs:

Whenever I game, two things invariably happen. First, a generous gamer who has somehow miraculously reached adulthood without any food allergies or dietary restrictions will offer to buy everyone pizza. Yay! Second, half the people in the room say, man, they wish they could eat pizza, but one has Celiac disease and another is lactose intolerant. For them, pizza might as well be poison. Then at least one other person quietly coughs that they're either a vegetarian or a paleo/primal dieter. By the time everyone with limited diet has bowed out, you realize the person who suggested pizza is the only person in the room who can safely eat it.I hate situations like that. Too often, the poor, generous gamer who just wanted to top off everyone's fuel tanks so the group could keep playing without interruption now feels like a jerk. That's not right. Feeding a mixed group of geeks is hard. [...]

Even if you don't play the game this book is based on, you recognize those red, green, and yellow hexes as an iconic part of geek culture. Lay out a hex shaped spread in those colors and you're automatically flying your geek flag. Plus, the edible hex maps look amazing. Each one is tailored to fit multiple dietary restrictions. As an extra bonus, most of them honestly aren't that hard to prepare.I hope this book is helpful for any geeks struggling to figure out how to feed a group of people whose digestive systems all seem to be at war. I promise, no matter how physically limited or just plain picky they are, it really is possible to invite almost all of your friends over for the same meal. Pick up some cheap, disposable hex shaped dishes and you can even do it with style.

Finally Your Baby Can Look More Like Your Pug

OK, maybe that's not the real purpose of these hats. Either way, they are simply adorable.

Hand-Drawn Atlas of the United States

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Frances Henshaw was a 14-year-old schoolgirl when she drew a series of maps in 1828. There were only 24 states at that time; she reproduced 19 of them. Henshaw preserved her work in a book with information about each state in beautiful handwriting.

Besides these maps, Henshaw’s book also contains carefully transcribed information about astronomy (likewise a socially-sanctioned area of study for young women), American history, and climatic patterns of the world.

While this personal atlas was produced as a school project, Henshaw clearly relished and took pride in her work. An inscription on the title page indicates that she saved the book and gave it to her son in 1872.

The Difference Between Sperm and Sperm Whales

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 06:00 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

The physics of scale has a profound effect on locomotion. The way we move through the world seems so normal, but is very different from what a single-cell organism has to deal with. The title comparison of this TED-Ed presentation comes from the fact that a sperm is a single cell that must move, but cannot do it the same way larger organisms like a whale moves around. Aatish Bhatia gives us the short version, with animation by Brad Purnell. You'll find a more in-depth explanation at Bhatia's website. Link -via Viral Viral Videos

Expecting Delicious Weather? Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs Facts

Posted: 26 Sep 2013 05:00 AM PDT

As I’m sure any of you with children already know, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 is coming out in theaters this Friday. In celebration, we’ve decided to compile a bit of info on the book and the movies. Whether you’re a fan of the book or a fan of the movie, you’ll almost certainly find something here of interest.

Similarities and Differences

Obviously a full-length movie couldn’t follow a short book like this one to a tee, so, there are some major differences. That being said, it seems like the writers did work to include as much as the original story as possible. Here are a few of the things that stayed the same:

  • The town name. While the movie village is originally called “Swallow Falls,” the mayor eventually renames the town to the name used in the book, “Chewandswallow.”
  • The Sanitation Department. Obviously any town that has food fall from the skies will have a serious problem if they just leave the mess all over the streets and sidewalk. Both the book and movie use specialized trucks to clean up the mess, though what they do with the leftovers differs. In the book, they feed the cats and dogs, then throw some in the ocean for the fishes and then put the rest in the ground so it will compost into good soil for flower gardens. In the movie, they make a mountain of food waste that eventually causes a dangerous landslide.
  • Specific foods. In the book, the sunset is replaced with a Jell-o mold setting in the west that looks just like the one Flint makes for Sam. Both also feature a giant pancake that lands on the local school. Also, while it’s not a food exactly, both feature an open-air restaurant where patrons can catch their dinner as it falls.
  • Danger. You can’t have a story without a climax, so in both tales, the food starts to become larger until it becomes truly problematic.

A few of the things that changed:

  • Requests. Imagine having a food allergy in a town like Chewandswallow. If you can’t choose what rains down, you could easily die. Aside from that, you’d likely almost never get your favorite food, whereas in the movie, Flint’s invention allows the residents to call the shots –though that’s precisely what causes the food to start mutating.
  • The people. In the book, the only people with actual identities are those in the family whose grandpa tells the tall tale of Chewandswallow. In the movie, the town is presented as a real location and the main characters are all residents of the town.
  • Science. The idea of a town raining food naturally is just outlandish, but in the movie, it’s actually happens because a man’s invention that was made to turn water into food flies into a raincloud –turning all the local precipitation into food.
  • The ending. In the book, the residents are forced to abandon Chewandswallow, but in the movie, the townspeople just rebuild their town using the giant food leftover on the street. There is one similarity though, the people in the book use a raft made from giant slices of bread and the movie shows the mayor ran away from the town on a boat made from bread –although the obese mayor eats most of his boat and sinks into the ocean.

Despite the differences, the original book's creators were pleased with the movie -though no word yet on how they feel about the sequel.

    Cloudy Again?

Speaking of endings, it seems the movie ending ends up not being the whole story as the sequel is said to (I haven’t seen it yet, so I can’t verify this myself) start out with Flint and the rest of the town having to leave their food-filled town. Unfortunately, it turns out that his food machine is still in operation, so while they’re gone, it starts to create dangerous, sentient food creatures. When Flint and his friends return to the island hoping to clean up their mess, they are confronted with creatures such as tacodiles, shrimpanzees and mosquitoasts.

The book also had a sequel, but the movie does not follow this tale at all. In this tale, Pickles to Pittsburgh, the townspeople return to Chewandswallow, not to resume their lives there, but to use forklifts, cargo planes and other tools to ship out the massive foods in the area to the starving people of the world. You have to admire them for recognizing the weather patterns that almost ruined their lives as a great way to solve world hunger. Still, it’s easy to see why this might not make such a great movie –though it’s worth noting that Sony helped market their new movie by providing over 200,000 pounds of food for Feeding America, so in real life, the tale has actually helped feed hungry families.

In fact, that’s not the only sequel to the book. In Planet of the Pies, the family that was originally featured in the first book learns that astronauts landed on Mars –only to find that pie is falling from the sky. As it turns out, Grandpa, the one who told the original tale of Chewandswallow, has had prior dealings with the Martians.

There’s even a Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Cookbook based on the original book with Grandpa offering up his favorite recipes based on the food that rained from the skies of Chewandswallow.

    Sound Familiar?

If you watched Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and kept thinking “I recognize that voice,” you’re probably right. In fact, you might just be amazed how many names you recognize from their list of voice actors. Of course, Bill Hader and Anna Faris are Flint and Sam, and you probably recognized Mr. T’s voice when Officer Earl spoke, but did you recognize James Cann as the voice of Flint’s father, or Neil Patrick Harris as the voice of Steve the Monkey, Bruce Campbell as Mayor Shelbourne, Andy Samberg as “Baby” Brent McHale, Al Roker as the weather station’s anchorman or Will Forte as the redneck Joesph Towne?

While most of these characters will be the same in the sequel, Terry Crews will be replacing Mr. T as Officer Earl and Will Forte will now be voicing Chester V. Fans of Kristen Schaal will be happy to know that she’s also been added to the cast, performing the voice of orangutan Barb.

    About the Authors

It’s a bit surprising that as well known as Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is, there’s surprisingly little information out there about the book’s author, Judi Barrett, and its illustrator, Ron Barrett. It’s not like the book is their only work either. In fact, Judi has published over 20 books, including another popular title, Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing, which Ron also illustrated.

That being said, there is a little information out there about the Barretts. Judi obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Pratt Institute before working as a freelance designer for advertising agencies. In 1968, she started teaching art and woodworking to children.

Ron graduated from the High School of Industrial Art and while still in school, he apprenticed for graphic designer Lucian Bernhard while being mentored by Ervine Metzl, illustrator and President of the Society of Illustrators. He left such a mark on Metzl that the illustrator predicted he "...would either wind up in a mental institution or make a million dollars." Like Judy, Ron started his career in advertising, working as an art director at Young & Rubicam and Carl Ally. Eventually, he left advertising to work as an illustrator, author and puzzle maker. He wrote comic strips for National Lampoon and later worked on O.J.’s Legal Pad with Henry Beard and John Boswell.

At some point, the couple was married, after which they started working on books together, including Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Even after their divorce though, they continue to work together. These days, Judy continues to teach in Brooklyn and Ron is still illustrating. Most recently, they worked together to release Grandpa’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs Cookbook.

Are you guys going to go see the sequel? Personally, I can’t wait, if only because I adore Steve the talking monkey.

Near Çıralı, Turkey, on that nation's southwestern coast, you can find fires burning near the shore. They've burned for thousands of years, fueled by underground sources of methane and hydrogen. Kaushik of Amusing Planet writes about the impact they left on ancient observers:

For hundreds of years, sailors could see the flames from sea and used them as a landmark to navigate, but today they are more often used by hikers to brew tea. These flames, according to some ancient literature, gave birth to the myth of the Chimera, a fire breathing mythical beast with the body and head of a lion, with the head of a goat arising from its back, and a tail that ended in a snake's head.

The Blob was Inspired by a True Story

    Posted: 25 Sep 2013 09:00 PM PDT

The 1958 Steve McQueen movie The Blob was about as ridiculous as a B-movie could get. The monster from outer space was a living piece of jelly that ate people and grew, eventually eating half a small town. The film is also notable as Steve McQueen's first feature film. But did you know it was based on a true story?

Believe it or not, The Blob is based on an incident in the 1950s when Philadelphia policemen stumbled upon a quivering purple lump that had crash landed in a nearby field, as if Grimace had suddenly been stricken with bubblegut in the middle of a hang gliding trip. According to the responding officers, the mass was like a giant glowing jelly ball, and it left a sticky residue when touched, because of course the first thing you would do when encountering a mysterious Plutonian blob is shove your hands into it.

So, it was a fictionalized account, as we thought. It's just one of 6 Movies You Won't Believe Are Based on Insane True Stories you can read about at Cracked. The others include A Few Good Men, The Hunt for Red October, and others that have an even better true story behind them. Link -via Unreality

    Walking on Skulls

    Posted: 25 Sep 2013 07:00 PM PDT

Thai artist Nino Sarabutra laid down 100,000 hand-made miniature porcelain skulls on the floor and asked art gallery visitors to walk on them. With every step, visitors will be treading on skulls, which sets up the perfect background to dealing with their own mortality.

Sarabutra, trained in ceramic arts at a Bangkok university, asked her family, friends, neighbors, students - to help make the skulls. The craftmanship is quite striking: while each skull has the same general shape and size, it is also distinctly unique.

The exhibition, titled "What Will You Leave Behind?", also asked the gallery visitor to participiate by answering her question:

'I want people to ask themselves how they live, what are they doing - if today was your last on earth, what will you leave behind?'

Sarabutra captured the visitors' answers and projected them on the gallery's wall as well as on her website. The answers range from the sublime "nothingness" to the cheeky "my body - for medical research." Mine would've been "a pile of debt" whereas Sarabutra's own would probably be "100,000 ceramic skulls no one would probably know what to do with."

At a recent exhibition at the Ardel Gallery of Modern Art in Bangkok, Sarabutra said, "I don't see the skulls as images of fear or sadness. They are liberating: look at all the opportunities, all the lives you could live, how serious your life is. Then go out and make the most of it."

We always have enough funny hats around, but anything can be a hat -if you put it on your head. Or at least you can tell people that. In this video, Jeff Wysaski of Pleated-Jeans ventures into the world of music with a song about hats. Actually, it's more of a chant, but it is available to download. Contains NSFW lyrics. I may have missed it, but I don't think they included the regulation Pastafarian colander helmet, nor a tinfoil hat.

Businessman and Homeless Man Fall Down: Would You Help?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2013 03:59 PM PDT

A man, walking with a crutch, falls down. Would you help? Of course, you say? Would the man's appearance matter?

    Be honest now.

Diego Dolciami and Matteo Moroni of DM Pranks decided to stage a social experiment in Italy. They filmed two scenarios: the first was with a well-dressed "businessman" in a suit. The second was with a homeless man in ragged clothing, carrying what seems to be his whole worldly possessions. In both instances, the men walked with a cane and fell down in front of strangers (both men and women).

Then, Dolciami and Moroni watched whether passers-by would help. They repeated the experiment 10 times each, and came to this shocking - or, depending on your point of view, obvious - conclusion that our decision to help someone in need is absolutely colored by our judgment of that person.

In 10 out of 10 cases, the businessman was helped by passers-by. But only 2 out of 10 instances was the homeless man rescued. Some people saw the homeless man fell down but hesitated to help, some approached but backed away when they saw the ragged clothings, and some didn't even stop at all.

Before you tsk, tsk-ed the choice of the people in the video clip, ask yourself what you would do. Would you be afraid that the homeless man might be crazy and try to hurt you if you tried to help? Maybe he's dirty and smelled bad?

    What would you do?

Monkeys Whisper When Talking About Someone They Don't Like

    Posted: 25 Sep 2013 03:00 PM PDT

    Image: Ltshears/Wikipedia

You know the feeling that people are talking about you when they start whispering as soon as you enter the room? Well, don't walk into this cage of cotton-top tamarins at the Central Park Zoo in New York City!

Researchers Rachel Morrison and Diana Reiss of The City University in New York were doing a research project on the monkeys by recording their loud calls and "mobbing behavior" in response to seeing people they fear. But, when a supervisor whom the monkey disliked entered their enclosure, the researchers noticed that the monkeys went quiet.

It turns out that the tamarins weren't exactly silent. When Morrison and Reiss examined their recordings, they realized that the monkeys were still chirping, but in a volume too soft for humans to hear. In effect, the tamarins were whispering to each other, potentially about what to do about the intruder.

"Psst, could you believe what that guy's wearing?" Image: Postdlf/Wikipedia

In the study, published in the scientific journal Zoo Biology, Morrison and Reiss noted that the "low amplitude vocalizations" were previously unknown in the species and that if it were not for their serendipitous recording and subsequent analysis of the spectrogram, the monkey whispers would likely have remained a secret of the tamarins.

"Although it is unclear what the motivational state of the tamarins was when in presence of the supervisor, it appears that they were responding to him as an ambiguous threat and may have been investigating the situation by cautiously approaching him to determine the actual level of threat and communicating to each other the appropriate behavioral response to take," the researchers said, as quoted by PopSci.

The researchers speculated that other species may utilize similar methods of communications to avoid being overheard by predators.

So the next time you go to the zoo and the monkeys turn quiet, they're probably talking about you!

    Shower Experiment

    Posted: 25 Sep 2013 01:00 PM PDT

The following is an article from The Annals of Improbable Research.

    by Jeff Van Bueren
    San Francisco, California

South American shower heads are sometimes of very unusual design (see photos). They often have an instant heating device that is attached by exposed wiring to a switch outside the shower stall. You get the (cold) water running and then flip on the heater device, which turns the water tepid or possibly warm, and then you cross yourself and step in.

Sometimes there are additional features, such as the light bulb shown in one of the fixtures here; the bulb may be there to indicate when the heater is on. (Presumably the heater element will burn out if it is on when water if not running).

    The Experiment
The experiment consisted of taking showers using this equipment, and seeing if electrocution would occur.

    The Results

As evidenced by the writing of this report, I am still alive. In 11 of 11 trials, my one-year, five-year, and ten-year survival was 100%. This is an astounding, considering the frayed wires, cracked tile, lack of power surge protection, and erratic water pressure involved.

    Followup
Ten years after the experiment, this researcher was conducting a retrospective analysis of the concept of “acceptable risk.” The perception of acceptable risk may be linked to age banding. For example, had I encountered these showers at my current age, I might have chosen to wash in the sink or to not wash.

The Real Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg

    Posted: 25 Sep 2013 08:30 AM PDT

    (Image: David Bachrach/Library of Congress)

For a long time, it was thought that there was only one existing photograph of President Lincoln at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery at Gettysburg on November 19th, 1863. As you can see, it's a shot of the dignitaries on stage, taken by David Bachrach (interactive graphic #3 identifies many of the people in the picture).

But Bachrach wasn't the only photographer at the event. Alexander Gardner and his crew were there, and made an experimental "stereograph" photo of the crowd. A picture was taken from two slightly different vantage points, with the aim of showing them together through the left and right eye for a 3D effect. With the technology of the time, they could have been taken several minutes apart. In 2007, John Richter identified Lincoln in the background of the stereograph photos. Now there were three photographs of Lincoln at Gettysburg!

    (Image: Alexander Gardner/Library of Congress)

Then enter UNC-Asheville media teacher and former Disney animator Chris Oakley. A longtime Civil War buff, Oakley took a new look at Gardner's crowd photographs. He and his students have spent the past two years analyzing the pictures and have found Lincoln, but in a different spot. To back his claim, the team used computer feature analysis of both the "new" Lincoln and the people around him to make identifications.

Of course, to proclaim such a find, Oakley had to have the data to back it up. Oakley's quest to confirm one person in a large crowd shot is detailed at Smithsonian magazine, with an interactive look at the photographs. Link

    All the James Bonds Combined

    Posted: 25 Sep 2013 07:30 AM PDT

Six actors, Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig, have portrayed James Bond in feature films (David Niven also played Bond in Casino Royale in 1967, but many consider that film "unofficial").

Redditor g_noodle combined Bond portraits of the six actors into two "transition" Bonds, with the three "early" Bonds (Connery, Moore, Lazenby) on the left and the three "recent" Bonds (Dalton, Brosnan, and Craig) on the right. Then those two images were combined to achieve a final combination, which looks like an actor who would be considered perfect for the role.

Who does it look like to you? Clive Owen? George Clooney? Mel Gibson? I still see Sean Connery and Roger Moore in this picture. The various steps in the process are shown in a series at imgur. Link -via reddit

    The UK's Doubly Thankful Villages

The shocking horror of World War I touched every corner of the United Kingdom. It brought death to every city, town and village..except for 52. In 52 villages, all of the men who marched off to war returned alive. After the war, these places were known as the "Thankful Villages."

Then yet another war engulfed Europe and the world. A the end of World War II, only 14 of those Thankful Villages remained free from wartime fatalities. These became known as the "Doubly Thankful Villages."

Among them is Upper Slaughter. Though its men left for war and the town itself was bombed by the Germans, all survived. You can read about it and other Doubly Thankful Villages at the link.

It's A Small Cake After All

    Bat-Eating Cane Toad

    Posted: 27 Sep 2013 02:00 AM PDT

    Image: Yufani Olaya

No, that toad is not sprouting wings. You're looking at a rare, perhaps the only, photograph of a cane toad eating a bat.

The photo was taken in the Cerros de Amotape National Park in Peru by park ranger Yufani Olaya, and posted on Phil Torres' blog.

Phil Torres (@phil_torres) of Peru Nature reported that Olaya said that the bat was flying a bit too close to the ground while trying to feed on insects when it accidentally ran into the open mouth of a cane toad. Cane toads are opportunistic feeders and have been reported feeding on practically anything it can swallow.

But did the cane toad manage to eat this bat? Olaya later reported that the toad couldn't get the remaining wings into its mouth, and spat out the bat. At first, he thought the bat - ahem, croacked - but the bat slowly recovered and managed to fly away.

    Using Polio to Treat Cancer

    Posted: 26 Sep 2013 11:00 PM PDT

A retired cardiologist tells the story of how a malignant tumor in his brain underwent experimental treatment -with a polio virus! Fritz Anderson was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a particularly lethal type of brain tumor. Surgery and chemotherapy didn't stop the tumor from growing.

As doctors there examined me, it was obvious that my tumor had already grown again; in fact, it had quadrupled in size since my initial chemo and radiation. I was offered several treatments and experimental protocols, one of which involved implanting a modified polio virus into my brain. (This had been very successful in treating GBMs in mice.) Duke researchers had been working on this for 10 years and had just received permission from the FDA to treat 10 patients, but for only one a month. (A Duke press release last May explained that the treatment was designed to capitalize “on the discovery that cancer cells have an abundance of receptors that work like magnets in drawing the poliovirus, which then infects and kills the cells. The investigational therapy . . . uses an engineered form of the virus that is lethal to cancer cells, while harmless to normal cells. The therapy is infused directly into a patient’s tumor. The virus-based therapy also triggers the body’s immune system to attack the infected tumor cells.”)

To receive the virus, Anderson's skull was exposed and a drip was installed for six hours. The tumor stopped growing, and after two years, only a scar is left. And we wondered for so long if viruses served any purpose. Read more about this strange new treatment at the Washington Post. Link -via TYWKIWDBI

Has your pup picked up a few pounds? Well, in his defense, he has been working too many hours at the office and eating fast food because he doesn't have time to cook.

But that doesn't mean that he can't slim down. The Morris Animal Inn in Morristown, New Jersey can help. The staff has a program and all of the equipment necessary for the task. Stacey Stowe writes for the New York Times:

At the Morris Animal Inn in Morristown, N.J., where Lolita works out, the pools and treadmills are part of a 25,000-square-foot building surrounded by nature trails. Staff members in khakis and polo shirts lead dogs through exercises and reward them with yogurt vegetable parfaits.

New Prime Minister of Australia Can't Move into His Official Residence Because It's Infested with Possums

    Posted: 26 Sep 2013 08:00 PM PDT

    (Photo: Jude Adamson)

The Lodge, the official residence of the Prime Minister in Canberra, is overrun with possums. They're causing embarrassment. The Daily Telegraph reports:

Former prime minister Julia Gillard once recalled an embarrassing dinner with a visiting foreign leader in 2012 which was interrupted by possum urine dribbling from the roof towards a valuable painting.

"We had a celebrated incident where we had a visiting foreign leader," she told the Sunday Telegraph.

"There was much shooing of people out of the dining room because someone spotted wee making its way down the wall to one of the very precious paintings from the National Gallery."

The Lodge is currently undergoing restoration. In the meantime, the newly-elected Tony Abbott is living in a nearby flat with police recruits. He says that he doesn't mind.

    Flynn's Breakfasts

    Posted: 26 Sep 2013 07:00 PM PDT

Walter White, Jr. (who prefers to be called Flynn now) is often shown in the series Breaking Bad while eating breakfast. What started out as a convenient way to have the family talking to each other developed into a trope about what Flynn had to eat vs. what he wanted to eat. The Whites' fortunes came to be measured by what Flynn had for breakfast. All these breakfast scenes are mapped out in one post at Thrillist.

Breaking Bad ends forever this Sunday, and while the show has repeatedly defied expectations over its five-season run, we do know a few things to be constant and true. Horrible things will always happen to Jesse Pinkman's girlfriends. Marie will always be clothed in some shade of purple. But, most importantly, you will never love anything as much as Walt Jr. loves breakfast. In celebration of the show's purest relationship, we decided to exhaustively catalog everything Flynn eats in the AM from the pilot to present.

I have a few teenagers, and it's safe to say that breakfast time is the one time of the day that you're sure to see your kid. If you have something to say, better do it over breakfast, because they have teenager things to do until bedtime. Still, the way Flynn's food has been analyzed over the series is a hoot. Scientists Invent Lightsaber, Claim Dubious Blog Headlines

    Posted: 26 Sep 2013 04:00 PM PDT

    (Image: Lucasfilm)

Physicists Mikhail Lukin (Harvard) and Vladan Vuletic (MIT) claim to have invented a new form of matter: photons that act as though they have mass. I have no idea if it's true. But I am certain that Prof. Lukin knows exactly how to get media attention:

"Photonic molecules," however, behave less like traditional lasers and more like something you might find in science fiction – the light saber.

"Most of the properties of light we know about originate from the fact that photons are massless, and that they do not interact with each other," Lukin said. "What we have done is create a special type of medium in which photons interact with each other so strongly that they begin to act as though they have mass, and they bind together to form molecules. This type of photonic bound state has been discussed theoretically for quite a while, but until now it hadn't been observed.

"It's not an in-apt analogy to compare this to light sabers," Lukin added. "When these photons interact with each other, they're pushing against and deflect each other. The physics of what's happening in these molecules is similar to what we see in the movies."

5 Fun Facts: It's All Greek To Me

    Posted: 26 Sep 2013 03:00 PM PDT

When an English speaker doesn't understand something, he would say "It's all Greek to me." But have you ever wondered about the origin of that phrase? Why Greek? Why not, say, Urdu or Aramaic?

    1. The Origin of "It's All Greek To Me"

According to Harry Oliver's Flying by the Seat of Your Pants: Surprising Origins of Everyday Expressions, it comes from the latin phrase Graecum est, non legitur or Graecum est, non potest legi (It is Greek; it cannot be read). Medieval Latin scribes in monasteries would write that phrase if they had trouble translating Greek alphabet and language, which was dwindling in use by the Middle Ages.

The phrase probably entered modern English usage when William Shakespeare used it in his 1599 play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. Here it is in Act 1 Scene 2:

Cassius: Did Cicero say any thing?
    Casca: Ay, he spoke Greek.
    Cassius: To what effect?
Casca: Nay, an I tell you that, I'll ne'er look you i' the face again: but those that understood him smiled at one another and shook their heads; but, for mine own part, it was Greek to me. I could tell you more news too: Marullus and Flavius, for pulling scarfs off Caesar's images, are put to silence. Fare you well. There was more foolery yet, if I could remember it.

In this context, an educated and wealthy aristocrat in the Roman Republic should be able to read and speak Greek. Casca, who speaks fluent Greek, is probably just playing dumb because he doesn't want to repeat a remark that is unflattering to Caesar.

    2. Well, what do the Greeks say?

Obviously, when a Greek doesn't understand something, he doesn't say "It's all Greek to Me." Rather, he says, Αυτά μου φαίνονται κινέζικα, or "This strikes me as Chinese."

    3. It's all ______ to me

That brings up an interesting question: what language is deemed the most incomprehensible and therefore most worthy of the phrase "It's all ______ to me" in various countries? Wikipedia and Omniglot have the list of the idioms.

Mark Liberman of Language Log distilled the info into this nifty graphic:

(Liberman has an updated version here)

    4. From Greek to Gringo

The word "gringo," which is a Spanish slang to denote foreigners or non-native speakers of Spanish, comes from the phrase "hablar en griego" (or speaking in Greek). You can see how the phrase accusing someone of not being intelligible because he's speaking Greek eventually evolved into a slang for foreigners.

    5. Coming Full Circle: Greeking ... in Latin!

When web or print designers create a mock up of a design with a block of text, they often put in place dummy text in the layout before the actual text is available. This process is called "greeking" and the most commonly used placeholder text is Lorem Ipsum, which is actually Latin, not Greek.

    Woman Wins Marathon by Accident

    Posted: 26 Sep 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Meredith Fitzmaurice had never run a full marathon before. She was working her way up to that when she entered the half-marathon at the Run for Heroes Marathon in Amherstburg, Ontario, last Sunday. But the half-marathon and the full marathon were happening at the same time, and she missed a turn on the half-marathon course. Fitzmaurice just kept going with the other runners.

"I just run with my watch, so I was watching my time since I planned to do my half in under 1:28," she said. "I was doing the race as training for my first full marathon in Detroit. But I'm looking at the time and wondering where the finish line is."

Fitzmaurice, 34, asked one of the bike officials on the course where the turn was for the half-marathon, although she admits by that point she had her suspicions.

"Once I realized what I had done, I figured, well I'll just run 20 miles and use it as a long run and call it a day," she said.

But as she headed from the turnaround she started to count people ahead of her.

There were only a few men ahead, and no women, so Fitzmaurice kept running, and was the first woman across the finish line, and the tenth overall with a time of 3:11:48. Link -via Metafilter

Jackie Chan Just Found Out He's an Internet Meme

Jackie Chan has been busy fighting bad guys (drunken fist-style, perhaps) for the past three years, so you'll excuse him when he just found out that he's an Internet Meme.

Chan posted this picture of him looking confused (that's the meme) with the text, "I am an Internet Meme?" on his official Facebook page yesterday and immediately garnered over 9,000 comments and 320,000 likes from his fans.

The Interweb has been waiting for this for three years. It feels validated. Now, if only we can get Yao Ming to acknowledge his meme ...

    New Fitness Equipment for Logrolling

Logrolling is a popular lumberjack sport. Two people get on a log and begin turning it with their feet. Whoever can stay on the log the longest wins. The other competitor goes down to a watery defeat.

It's a fun sport, but competition logs can weigh 500 pounds. That's just not practical for training or even recreational logrolling. That's why champion logroller Abby Hoeschler and her partners designed Key Log. It's a synthetic log that accurately simulates a competition log, but is light enough to be easily portable.

Should You Take Your Lottery Winnings in a Lump Sum or Annual Payments?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2013 09:30 AM PDT

Playing the lottery, at least on a national scale, is often called "a tax on people who are bad at math." The odds of winning the top prize in the Powerball lottery are a constant 1 in 175 million. The number of people who buy lottery tickets does not affect the odds of winning, but it does affect the odds that more than one winner will have to split the jackpot.

That said, there can be benefits from buying a ticket even when you don't win, up to a point. If you buy a raffle ticket that will benefit a charity, you've made a donation. If you get as much pleasure out of hoping to win on your $2 ticket as you would have gotten out of the $2 candy bar you otherwise would have bought, then it's worth the $2. But if you buy more tickets, the net worth goes down as it cuts into the family's grocery budget. And if you will be sorely disappointed when you don't win, the value of the initial pleasure is wiped out.

But what happens when you win the jackpot? Business Insider take a look at the option you have of taking the winnings in a lump sum vs. an annual payout plan. They crunch the numbers as far as taxes and investments go. Taxes are going to take a lot of the money either way, but when the jackpot is $400 million, does that really matter? The real difference is in whether you invest your winnings. A decent investment plan will make a lump sum pay off big over time.

What the article does not cover are real-life headaches for a lottery winner. Here are your estimated payouts, which will vary depending on your state taxes:

You can take the cash up front. This is a $223.6 million check. After paying federal taxes on it, we calculated that you'd have $135.1 million left. Not bad.

You could also take the annuity, which pays $400 million over 30 years with an increasing annuity — $7.1 M the first year, $7.4M the next, increasing up to $22.2M in the 30th year — and pay the top rate every year for the next thirty. That makes the $400 million jackpot worth, assuming the tax rates don't change from here to 2043, $242.9 million after federal taxes.

Now factor in all your relatives, who know you've won a $400 million lottery. If you don't make each and every one of them a millionaire, they will be very disappointed. And you can't do that on $7 million. You have more relatives than you realize. You can set up large trusts for your children, but what about your grandchildren, nephews, siblings, and cousins? None of them will understand why you have to draw a line somewhere. You can hand out $10,000 at a time, but there will be at least one of your grandchildren and quite a few cousins who will spend it within weeks and come back for more. For years. Until they hate you, and vice versa. Of course, not all of your relatives are like that, but you don't know until you are confronted with vast wealth.

Here's another scenario: Say you have four children, and you want to treat them all equally. You set them each up with, say, a $10 million trust that pays out when they are adults. Maybe even as an annuity. Then those children grow up. Child one uses the money to buy a house (or two or three), set money aside for retirement, put their kids through college, invest for their heirs, and doesn't brag about how much money they have. Child two gives the entire amount to their church, and lives a marginal existence while working a low-wage job. Child three never works, becomes a drug addict, and refuses to have anything to do with the rest of the family. Child four enjoys the money, becomes a real ass, abuses his household servants, and invests in third-world sweatshops. Are you now regretting your promise to treat them all the same and give them money you no longer control?

Those of a certain age will also need to factor in how long you expect to live to enjoy that money.

Oh sure, it's fun to dream. The question "What would you buy if you won $400 million?" is kind of silly, because you could buy whatever strikes your fancy. A more thoughtful question is "What would you do if you won $100,000?" That takes some real decision-making skills, because it's a large but limited amount that will not allow you to quit your job forever. The idea forces you to choose the most important things to do with your money. I once had some great ideas for this $100K, but now it would be a simple case of paying off my debts and using what little is left over to help pay my kids' college tuition. My life would not change much at all, except I'd have less stress.

What would you do with $100,000? What would you do with $400 million: would you take the lump sum or the annuity? How would you handle distributing that money? The question is moot for today; the $400 million winner has emerged, and the Powerball jackpot sits at $60 million. Which isn't bad, either.

A Tanning Bed Coffin Is Perfect For Jersey Shore Vampires

    Posted: 26 Sep 2013 09:00 AM PDT

The worst thing about vampires is that nasty, pale skin. Unfortunately, all but those in Twilight have to avoid sunlight, which means being sickly pale is their only option. Luciano Podcaminsky is here to help though with his coffin-shaped tanning bed. Of course, the UV Rays emitted might still be poisonous to vampires, but maybe in low dosages it can improve the complexion without killing the tanner.

    We Are Brothers

Robin, the middle of three brothers, got married. His two brothers, Baddy Paris and Rufus Starlight, reacted in a hilariously childish way: they begged him not to -as a wedding toast!

Our brother asked us to be his best men for his wedding. We knew the hardest thing would be doing a traditional best man’s speech, because we would cry too much.  So instead, we made a music video - a plea not to leave us!  Which he did, regardless.

They wish Robin and Helen the best anyway. Link -via Tastefully Offensive

Finally Buffalo Wing Treats That Aren't A Mess

    Posted: 26 Sep 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Buffalo wings are the ultimate game day snack, but they are also extremely messy and no one wants to keep wiping their hands or sucking on their fingers before they grab their beer to toast to a great play. That's why Can I Stay For Dinner's buffalo chicken rolls are such a great idea -they combine blue cheese, chicken and Frank's Red Hot Sauce for all the flavors of wings with egg roll wrappers to protect your fingers. They're even baked so they won't leave your fingers greasy.

There is one thing I would change though, I would switch out the little bit of cabbage filling for chopped celery as it suits the classic buffalo wing flavor better.

    Abandoned Treehouse Mansion

    Posted: 26 Sep 2013 07:30 AM PDT

The former owner of this treehouse had to be the most popular kid in town! It appears to be built better than a lot of family homes. We don't know exactly where this abandoned, Victorian-style treehouse is, but urbex photographer Drew Perlmutter took pictures from several vantage points to share with us, including the interior. It's a shame that it's no longer maintained for a child's use. The Spanish moss gives it an otherworldly feeling. See more pictures at HuffPo Home. Link -via Messy Nessy
