The Wedding Chapel in Antarctica

Posted: 19 Sep 2013 04:00 AM PDT

(Photo: James L. Boka)

Trinity Church is a beautiful little Russian Orthodox Church in Antarctica. It was built in the 1990s and is manned year-round. Atlas Obscura reports:

While most of buildings on this continent are built to hug the ground in order to reduce their exposure to the polar wind, this church proudly stands 50 feet tall. It is a wooden structure built from Siberian pine and carved in the traditional Russian style by master carpenters of Altay.

The priests manning the church take care of the spiritual needs of the staff of nearby Russian, Chilean, Polish, and Korean research stations. Their obligations include praying for the souls of 64 Russians who lost their lives in various expeditions, and the very occasional, very chilly, baptism.

While the church is large enough to accommodate 30 visitors, it is rarely filled to capacity. In 2007, however, the church performed its first wedding -- the first wedding ever celebrated in a church in Antarctica -- between Chilean and Russian researchers.

P.S. This isn't the only church in Antarctica. McMurdo Station is serviced by the Chapel of the Snows.

How Much Effort is a Pet Worth?

Posted: 19 Sep 2013 12:00 AM PDT

I agree with Dan Hopper's placement of dragons on this chart. They're the greatest possible pets, but the upkeep demands are terrible.

Yes, babies require an enormous amount of effort. You change their diapers. But remember: in 50 years, they'll change yours.

Elementary School Teacher Gives Birth in Her Classroom

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 10:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Archant)

Showing remarkable dedication to her job, Diane Krish-Veeramany, a primary school teacher in Chigwell, UK, gave birth to her son in her own classroom with the assistance of her colleagues:

She said: "I texted my husband to come and get me but my colleagues asked if I wanted an ambulance.

"I said 'I'll just go home.' I just didn't think it would be a contraction as it didn't feel like one."

But it soon became clear she was going into labour, and three teaching assistants, Dita Gojnovci, Chris Sword and Sam Mustafa, stepped in to help.

The three delivered the baby while taking instructions from paramedics over the phone, as towels and other equipment were gathered from around the school.

That Vintage Stinks

Looking for a toilet brush holder that will class up your restroom? Then look no further than Japan's wine bottle toilet brush. Just remember that when people ask why you have a bottle of wine in the bathroom, it's probably going to sound a lot less weird to tell them the truth than to lie to them in any way.

This is only one of ten bizarre toilet brushes and holders featured on this funny Inventor Spot list.

13 Rules For Using Commas Without Looking Like An Idiot

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 08:00 PM PDT

One of the most popular articles of the day is a guide to using commas from Business Insider. The rules are pretty down-to-earth, and the mood is lightened by the duck in most of the examples. But there are always people who will disagree, or at least make a joke out of them. Some of the responses from Fark:

Thirteen rules for using commas without looking, like an idiot.

I'd like to thank my parents, Ayn Rand and God.

So, when you see a duck you are to use commas?

No, one should treat rule #9 as an absolute.

The actual rules are not quite as funny, but read them and you'll be thinking of duck all night. Link

Did Hollywood Give the 1920s a Boob Job?

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 06:00 PM PDT

Did you go see the Baz Luhrman movie The Great Gatsby? You probably didn't think a thing was wrtong with the curvy women of the film, but Lisa Hix noticed. The real flappers of the 1920s didn't have what modern actresses have, meaning prominent breasts. In fact, the style of the time was anything but curvaceous.

Jonathan Walford, co-founder of the Fashion History Museum, says the Roaring Twenties party scene viewed the release of women’s bodies from constraining undergarments as wildly sexy.

“Dresses featured legs, arms, hips and faces, not cleavage,” Walford writes in an email. “It meant a woman was no longer bound by convention—she was liberated from the confines of traditional femininity because she could think for herself, dance and drink and smoke and swear, and that is sex appeal.”

So Hix called Catherine Martin, The Great Gatsby's producer, production designer, and costume designer.

For the body-hugging fit of the film’s clothes, Martin, who is also married to “Great Gatsby” director Baz Luhrmann, says she took inspiration from a recent exhibition of the clothes designed by 1920s innovator Jeanne Lanvin at the Museé des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.

“It was interesting to see clothes in person, styled on a mannequin, and then see a model of the period in the same clothing, in a black-and-white photo,” she says. “I noticed how ethereal and extraordinary the clothes seemed on these very neutral dummies and how incredibly frumpy the clothes looked on the person wearing them in the photograph.

“I think that what we understand as a ’20s silhouette is very much from the snapshot or from the social pages,” she continues. “But when you see the sketch of the creator, there is a big disconnect. What we chose to do, because we wanted to really capture the spirit of the ’20s, is really look at a lot of illustrations that people drew of the clothes.”

In other words, Martin’s movie is more about the fantasy world of the 1920s in the minds of forward-thinking designers, and not how it looked in real life. And she believes the ’20s ideas about sex appeal were much closer to 2013’s. But to Walford, it’s more like Martin imposed modern reality-TV standards of beauty onto “Gatsby,” which was set during a time when people admired an entirely different aesthetic.

Beware the Toxic Effects of the Slime-tini

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 05:00 PM PDT

No, the slime-tini isn't really poison. In fact, with tripel sec, vodka, sour apple Pucker and grenadine, it's probably pretty tasty. But a few too many of these bad boys will certainly leave you feeling like you drank poison when you wake up the next morning.

Teenage Driver

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 12:00 PM PDT

One lesson I try to get across to my driving student is to pay attention to clues that you'll need to slow down and eventually stop, like brake lights, red lights, and stop signs a block ahead. I need to send her this picture. The Chevy pickup was photographed in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The unnamed teenage driver realized too late that the car in front of him was stopped at a red light. According to an officer in a video report at the scene, the truck

"…swerved off the roadway to the right, went into a sideways slide, it struck the wood fence that just got put up two days ago, and then it hit the brick wall. After it hit the brick wall, it rotated around rode up the guy wire, and then snapped suspended where it is …uh, as you see it."

Ta da! The good news is that no one was injured in the accident. Link -via Arbroath

Ponies!

My thanks and a double brohoof to BUCK 2013 organizer Jake Biddulph for providing me with high resolution photos for this post. BUCK 2013 has placed the painting up for sale. You can read more information at the link.

Everything is Samuel L. Jackson's Fault

8 Battles Fought After the War Ended

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 08:00 AM PDT

In many wars of the past, the fighting went on even after the war was over. Most of these can be attributed to slow communication. Before telegraphs and telephones, it could take weeks to get a message anywhere, and the difficulties were only greater during wartime. But that wasn't the only reason the fighting didn't stop. Sometime it was hard to define when a war "ended."

The Battle of New Orleans is often remembered as one of the most decisive American victories in the War of 1812. It’s also often remembered as an infamous battle-fought-after-the-war-ended, though the moniker is only half true. It’s true that the battle, which was fought on January 8, 1815, took place after the Treaty of Ghent was signed in Belgium on December 24, 1814, and even after the treaty had been ratified by the Prince Regent (the future King George IV). But President James Madison and the American Senate did not ratify the treaty until February 16, allowing the battle to assume an arguable level of tactical importance.

The Battle of New Orleans is only one of eight such battles explained at mental_floss. Link

Boy Asks Santa to to Stop Kids from Bullying His Sister

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Karen Suffern is the mother of 8-year old twins, Ryan and Amber. To plan her budget, she asked her kids to write letters to Santa Claus, describing what they want. Ryan had the right priorities:

Her son, Ryan's, letter to Santa started off normally:

"Dear Santa ... I wanted a (remote control) car and helicopter, but I don't want that anymor. Kid at school are still picking on Amber and its not fair," he wrote. "I prayed that they will stop but god is bisy and needs your help."

Suffern felt tears fill her eyes as she read her son's letter asking Santa to help stop the bullying his overweight sister was experiencing at school.

Reading the letter was tough for Suffern. "I try to build up my daughter's self-esteem and tell her she is beautiful, but people say hurtful things to me, because I also have a weight problem, and that hurts me," she said. "I can't imagine what she goes through."

She had a vague idea that Amber was teased on the bus, but she didn't know the extent of the bullying. Amber, who has attention-deficit (hyperactivity) disorder and other mental and mood disorders, never mentioned the teasing.
