The Best and Worst Internet Connections in America

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 10:00 PM PDT

Most of us are aware that America has internet speeds slower than other industrialized nations, but how's your internet speed compared to other Americans? If you're in the dark blue section of the map, you're doing well. In the dark red? You're dragging!

The map above shows relative download speeds (by congressional district*) across the contiguous U.S., based on January through July data from over 5,600 cities and towns represented in Ookla's Net Index. Blue means a faster download speed than the national average of 18.2 Mbps, while red means a slower download speed.

18.2 Mbps isn't shabby, and it's a lot faster than where some other sources put U.S. internet speeds. This is because Ookla's data are primarily coming from the site Speedtest.net, which is self-selectively used by people who'd actually bother to check their download speeds. On one hand, this means that the raw Mbps figures are heavily skewed towards high-speed users. On the other hand, it means that the relative comparison between regions is a lot more interesting – instead of simply mapping out what parts of the country haven't fully switched away from dial-up, this is showing, for users who are at least somewhat internet-savvy, where good speeds are generally available.

I live in the southeast corner of Kentucky. Right there is one of the reasons I spent way too much time getting my job done. Link

The AMC series Breaking Bad has plenty of comedy elements, but they have to be taken out of context for us to see how really silly they are. Out of context, Walt and Jesse may as well be Bo and Luke Duke, two good 'ol boys staying one step ahead of the law. -via Uproxx

Han Sulu and the Chewgato

"Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good phaser at your side, kid." Han Solo would make a great Star Trek character, but I'm having trouble seeing him as a Starfleet officer.

Phil Noto, who previously painted an aging Luke Skywalker and made a shoe that looks like a warship, made this picture of Han Solo as Sulu and Chewbacca as the Mugato.

The Day A Fan was Pulled In to Play Pro Soccer

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 06:00 PM PDT

Since he was a small child, Steve Davies was a West Ham United fan. When he grew up, he went to all their games, got team tattoos, and played in a Sunday league himself. When West Ham played at Oxford City on July 27, 1994, Davies was up front, giving his beloved team a hard time, as British football fans will do.

Harry Redknapp delights in telling this particular yarn. Last time he told the story it was on TV show A League of Their Own, at Christmas last year. "There's a guy next to the dug-out," Harry told the host, "and he's got West Ham tattooed all over his arms and neck, he's got the earrings … After two minutes, he started on me." Today, speaking to me in his third one-on-one interview since taking over as QPR boss, he slips into storytelling mode.

"'We ain't got that Lee Chapman up front do we – I ain't coming every week if he's playing,'" says Harry, doing his impression of Steve. "Half-time I made five substitutions, and we only had the bare 11 out – I was running out of players. Then we got another injury, so I said to this guy in the crowd, 'Oi, can you play as good as you talk?'"

The rest of the tale is hallowed football folklore. "I slung a leg over the barrier and Harry walked me down the tunnel," says Steve. "What's your name, son?" Harry asked, sizing up this apparent hooligan. "I couldn't believe it. Inside the dressing room, the players were sat down resting at half-time." West Ham were two-nil up, but the team was carrying injuries. "Then Harry and says, 'Lee you're off; Steve you're on.'"

Chapman, shirtless, just nodded. "I asked him, what size boots are you, son?" Redknapp recalls. The kit manager brought Steve a uniform.

Davies thought he would sit on the bench or play a couple of minutes as a joke, but he was in for the experience of a lifetime. Read the whole story at The Guardian. Link -via Metafilter

Hamster Dress Up

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 04:00 PM PDT

The blogger at Mythillogical- Myths & Fabrications said her daughter wanted to dress up her hamster in doll clothes. Mom had a better idea. The trick to getting pets to cooperate is to turn such an activity into something the pet wants to do -like explore holes in a box. With a camera ready, the hamster (named David Bowie) did just that. Children Burned by Fruit

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Stephanie Ellwanger of Hanford, California, took her two daughters and three of their friends to a pool party. By the next morning, the girls looked to be badly sunburnt. All five girls developed burns to the point of blisters, and were taken to a hospital. They were all admitted with second-degree burns over 15% of their bodies. Doctors suspected chemical burns.

Then she remembered the lime tree.

A neighbor had a large lime tree that grew over the fence into the backyard where the girls went swimming. They had picked some of the fruits and squeezed them out into imaginary tea cups in their play lemonade stand.

Was there something on the limes? Ellwanger wondered about pesticides. She mentioned this to the doctors, then went home to do some research.

A few attempts on Google yielded a term she’d never heard before: Phytophotodermatitis, a chemical reaction that makes bare skin hypersensitive to ultraviolet light. It’s caused by contact with photosensitizing compounds which occur naturally in some fruits and vegetables — like limes.

The girls spent two weeks in the hospital, and now have to be home schooled to avoid sunlight. Phytophotodermatitis can be caused by lemon, lime, celery, carrot, and other foods. When I was a kid, my friends and I would put lemon juice on our hair before outdoor sports to help the sun bleach it. Little did I know we were playing with fire!  Link  -via Arbroath

The Truth About Cow Tipping

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Every once in a while, you'll hear someone talk about coming from a rural background where there was nothing for young people to do except get into mischief like cow-tipping. Don't believe them.

So why does the myth of cow tipping persist?

Part of this, of course, is that the closest many people come to a cow is seeing a Holstein along the interstate. Glimpsed at 65 miles per hour, it’s possible to imagine a docile bovine easily overturned by a blacked-out college bro. Approach a cow on foot and you’ll quickly realize how difficult the task of tipping would be. A 1,400-pound dairy heifer is a broad, squarely built animal — there’s a reason the adjective “beefy” exists. You’d have more luck trying to tip over a Camry than a cow.

Nate Wilson, 66, grew up around cows, began milking cows in 1970 and recently retired after selling his dairy farm in Sinclairville, New York. “I think I know a thing or two about cattle,” he says. And for him, the whole notion of cow tipping is, to put it politely, bullcrap. “There’s more cows that have been tipped in people’s imaginations,” says Wilson, “than in the real world.”

But can it be done? At Modern Farmer, the actual physics of turning over a cow are explained in geeky detail. Of course, you also have to add in typical bovine behavior, because there are some things even a cow will not put up with. Link -via the Presurfer

Amazing Bird Nests From Around the World

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 09:30 AM PDT

Sharon Beals, fascinated with the variety of birds and the way they adapt, took pictures of nests in museums and educational facilities for her book Nests: Fifty Nests and the Birds that Built Them.

"There are those that build with mud, burrow tunnels, weave hanging pendulous baskets or cups onto branches, stitch leaves, stack sticks, or glue with saliva. Some just make simple scrapes on the ground, or fill cavities with fur and bones, and others that camouflage their nests with lichen, spiderweb, or moss," Beals wrote in her book.

Pictured here is the nest of a Caspian tern, collected from Baja California, Mexico, in 1932. See more at Slate. Link -via Nag on the Lake

The Ultimate Job Interview Prank: Meteor Apocalypse!

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 09:00 AM PDT

The set up: An office interview with LG Electronics in Chile
The goal: To promote how life-like images are on LG's new 82-inch "Ultra HD" TV (which is four times as sharp as conventional LCD standards, according to web reviews)
The participants: Unwitting job applicants ... and a meteor

LG Electronics in Chile had a bit of fun (and viral advertising) by pranking prospective job applicants into believing that the apocalypse had arrived. The company set up its massive 82-inch television on the office back wall and fashioned it into a fake window, complete with the appropriate view of the downtown skyline.

The crew also installed hidden cameras from multiple angles in the room.

Minutes into the interview, a "meteor" was shown crashing into the city. The combination of the high definition image and sound effects captured the interviewees' panicked reactions as they thought that the apocalypse had arrived.

The YouTube clip had gone viral - it racked over 2 million hits in just a few days - though some people thought that the whole thing was staged.

LG asked "what would you do in this situation?" and I could honestly say that I'd probably pooped my pants.

Cheddar Cheese Ice Cream Sandwich

Ice cream is yummy. So is a good, sharp cheddar cheese. Why not combine them? That's what Paul Qui and his creative team did:

Before the highly anticipated Qui opened in Austin, Texas earlier this summer, pastry chef Monica Glenn began to develop an aged cheddar ice cream inspired by the frozen cheese confections executive chef Paul Qui enjoyed as a child in the Philippines. Next, sous chef Jorge Hernandez developed delicate cajeta waffle cookies and it morphed into a toothsome ice cream sandwich with a cult following.

The Debrett's Guide to Mobile Phone Etiquette

Posted: 05 Sep 2013 07:30 AM PDT

The Telegraph has published a 10-point guide to cell phone manners from Debrett's, the traditional authority on British aristocracy and social manners. The kinds of things you'd expect, like:

8. Step away from the phone at meal times

Don't put your phone on the dining table, or glance at it longingly mid-conversation.

9. Don't carry on mobile phone calls when in the middle of something else

Don't carry on mobile phone calls while transacting other business - in banks, shops, on buses and so on. It is insulting not to give people who are serving you your full attention.

Most of it is intuitive, meaning the people who will read it don't need to be told how to take calls or not in various situations. And as commenters at Metafilter quickly pointed out, the list is only about phone calls, which is inadequate in an age when young people use smart phones for much more, like texting, watching TV, web browsing, music, and social networking. If we were going to construct a comprehensive list of rules for using smartphones, what rules would you suggest? Link
