How Do Conspiracy Theories Impact Personal Finance?

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 10:08 PM PDT

Why bother saving money when the government can just take it away from you?

This is what a random person asked me one time.

For some reason or another, I’ve met all kinds of characters in my life between my travels and my random groups of friends.

I’ve noticed that there’s a segment of folks that believe in conspiracy theories and use them as reasoning for not saving money or getting into any of this financial stuff. It’s actually very interesting.

The fans of conspiracy theories often recommend keeping money in silver, not working for the Man, not keeping money in the bank, and not following the conventional lifestyle.

As you could tell, I’m not exactly a huge fan of the conventional lifestyle.

I’m actually a huge fan of conspiracy theories. I enjoy them. I read them and watch the videos.

This is why I wanted to look at the role of conspiracy theories on personal finance…

Should you even bother saving money?

Why even save money if the government can take it away from you? Why trust your money with a bank account?

These are valid questions. I don’t really have any answers. I can’t force you to save money.

My belief is that you should always save money for the future. The future can involve any of the following:

  • Investments.
  • Trips.
  • Education.
  • A rainy day.
  • Just because.

No conspiracy theory will bail you out when your car breaks down or when you want to plan a trip.

You don’t have to spend all of your money on your love life or going out because you don’t believe in saving. You can save for the future.

I can’t convince you to trust a bank, but on the flip side — do you really trust keeping your money on your pillow?

What you need to watch out for with conspiracy theories…

They are meant for entertainment. You shouldn’t accept them as fact. They are fun. They allow you to question the world and those in power. However, at the end of the day, they won’t help you out.

There are people out there doing cool things. You can save up and buy your first rental property. You can look for a job that you enjoy. There are so many other ways that you could spend your time in your 20s. It’s a shame to spend it on stressing about conspiracy theories.

Do you really want to live in constant fear of the government? Do you want to think that everything is a scam?

I realize that keeping your money in a bank account that pays minimal interest isn’t the best idea. It does beat spending all of your money and ending up in debt. No theory can help you out when you owe a credit card thousands of dollars.

One thing you need to know…

If you can’t solve it or act upon it, sweat it.

You can’t spend your life stressing over things that are out of your control. You just can’t. You need to crush your fears and focus on what’s within your reach.

You can get in better shape. You can lose that gut. You can find a more attractive partner. You can get laid more. You can save more money.

You can’t control the government. You can’t worry about higher powers in the world economy. You can’t stop paying your income taxes because you read something about it online.

One last final point…

You can’t blame the system.

It is what it is. If you don’t want to wait until you’re 65 to retire, you can check out more about early retirement. If you hate your job, you can do something about it. You can always change things. You can’t just blame the system for everything.

You’re in control. Don’t let the system control you.

I don’t want you to stop reading up on conspiracy theories. I think it’s great to be curious and question the system. Just don’t fall into the trap where you screw yourself over because of some theory that you read about online.

You need to worry about paying your bills, being good to those around you, and creating a decent life for yourself. Stressing over the government won’t get you very far.
