DeLorean Convergence

Posted: 13 Jul 2013 11:00 PM PDT

What do you think is going on here? The most logical explanation is that a time traveler has created a paradox by returning to our present from five different points in time. I would guess that five versions of the person are inside the house watching Back to the Future. Redditor jraevis posted this picture of the shenanigans in his neighborhood. If you go see the full-size picture, you'll see the sign says "DeLorean Parking Only." Link

Penny Loafers

Posted: 13 Jul 2013 09:00 PM PDT

Are Sonya Clark's shoes made of pennies and copper sheets comfortable? Probably not. But in a past, they'd be considered so cool. Clark explains why she likes to work with copper:

I relate to the color of the metal because it is the color of my skin. In anthroposophical medicine, copper alleviates poor memory. By using copper, I reconnect with my ancestry and reawaken lost memories of cultural identity. Metaphysically, the redness of the metal is said to reflect lineage. Copper veins are likened to the blood of the earth, the blood of our mothers, and therefore heritage.

Decapitated Worms Regrow Heads with Memories Still Inside

Posted: 13 Jul 2013 06:00 PM PDT

Think that memories are in the brain? New research says that may not be exactly true -at least for flatworms. The planarian is fascinating in that it has the ability to regrow body parts when you cut it into pieces -it will even grow a new head if you cut it off! If that's not freakish enough, experiments show that a newly-regrown head can have some knowledge the earlier head learned. Experiments had been don on planarian heads decades ago, with inconsistent results. Tal Shomrat and Michael Levin at Tufts University returned to this idea with state-of-the-art planarian training methods and computerized testing methods. They trained the worms to overcome their distaste of light and rough surfaces to reach food. After two weeks, the trained planarians went straight to the food, unlike a control group of untrained worms.

The worms were relieved of their heads. The scientists made certain that no bit of brain survived. Then, after the worm stumps had painstakingly re-headed themselves, the planarians went back into the testing chamber.

The memory wasn't there right away. But Levin and Shomrat found that if they gave all the worms one quick training session before testing, worms who'd previously been familiarized with rough petri dishes reached the food significantly faster than the other worms. The training session "basically allowed the worms to refresh their memory of what they had learned before decapitation," Levin says. In other words, their memories had survived the loss and regrowth of their heads.

Levin doesn't know how to explain this. He says epigenetics may play a role—modifications to an organism's DNA that dial certain genes up or down—"but this alone doesn't begin to explain it."

Libraries Used to Look Like This

Pulling Quills From a Raven

Posted: 13 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

Gertie Cleary of Elmsdale, Nova Scotia, saw a raven perched on her fence with porcupine quills stuck in its face. The overly-friendly juvenile raven had a run-in with a porcupine, then made a better choice to let the woman get close. Cleary, wisely wearing gloves, did what she had to do.

The bird, clearly in pain, waited for Cleary to get each one of the quills out. Cleary says she didn’t think twice about helping the animal in distress.

“It reminded me of a child with a splinter and when you pull a splinter out, they holler and screech and pull their hand away,” says Cleary.

Once the quills were out, Cleary carried the bird to her daughter’s house, where she fed him dog food and water.

She let the raven, named Wilfred by the Cleary family, outside the next day, and he hung around for a while before flying off. Let's just hope the bird learned his lesson about porcupines. Link  -via Arbroath

The 5 Most Badass Ways People Escaped from Slavery

Posted: 13 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT

During the days of slavery in America, there were plenty of people willing to risk their lives for freedom. Many did escape, many were caught, and many died, but there are a few stories of schemes that were so unbelievable that they not only worked, but went down in history. I particularly liked the story of Lewis Williams, who was arrested in Cincinnati for escaping from Kentucky. Williams was taken before a judge for an extradition hearing.

And they would have gotten away with it, too, if the leader of the black community in Cincinnati hadn't been a stone-cold badass by the name of Reverend William Troy. No sooner had he heard about the arrest than he was dreaming up a plan so insane that no one would see it coming.

As luck would have it, Troy knew another young man who bore a striking resemblance to Williams. And he also knew that some white people have famously questionable skills in the field of advanced telling black people apart. So when Troy heard that Williams had been seized, he made sure that a crowd of his fellow abolitionists rushed over and packed into the courtroom. Then they simply waited until everyone else was distracted by a dramatic legal argument, at which point Williams and his double quickly switched places and Williams crawled out the door on his hands and knees, hidden behind a wall of hilariously large old-timey women's skirts.

But that's not the end of the story, because he later had to escape from a safe house with another audacious scheme. Read his story and those of four others at Cracked. Link

Mars Curiosity Rover in LEGO

Posted: 13 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT

Image: Stephen Pakbaz

Stephen Pakbaz has worked on the actual Mars Curiosity rover, so designing it in LEGO is probably a cinch for the mechanical engineer:

"I combined this first-hand experience with my Lego hobby to create a Lego model that was as faithful to the actual rover as possible in terms of accuracy, details and mechanical function," says designer Stephen Pakbaz, a mechanical engineer who worked on Curiosity at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The model has a working suspension system, an articulated arm and a poseable mast for recreating your favourite events in Curiosity's ongoing mission.

Now, LEGO has approved the release of the official Mars Curiosity Rover LEGO set. Ain't that awesome?

The Pixar Theory

Posted: 13 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Jon Negroni has a theory about Pixar films. They are all part of the same universe, connected to each other. This goes way beyond seeing a character from one movie in the background of another (often as a toy). This is a unified theory he explains in a timeline. The first Pixar event in the timeline is the movie Brave, which explains the origin of animals and inanimate objects that talk. He explains that and then goes on.

Centuries later, the animals from Brave that have been experimented on by the witch have interbred, creating a large-scale population of animals slowly gaining personification and intelligence on their own.

There are two progressions: the progression of the animals and the progression of artificial intelligence. The events of the following movies set up a power struggle between humans, animals, and machines. The stage for all-out war in regards to animals is set by Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, and Up, in that order. Notice I left out A Bug’s Life, but I’ll explain why later.

The way he connects each Pixar film, from Cars to Up! to Monsters, Inc. will blow your mind …but not as much as how the end connects to the beginning. Read the whole theory at Negroni's blog. Link  -via Geekosystem

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 13 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT

You know, we don't say this often enough, but I feel so grateful to have the community of readers that we do here at Neatorama. I surf a lot of sites, looking for the best of the web to post here. I see comment sections of all kinds -some that are empty, others that are full of trolls, illiterates, and political nut cases. I see communities that appear to be all children, or all people who just want to fight. Then I come back here to Neatoramanauts who I feel like I know, who have varying intelligent opinions expressed in a matter-of-fact, non-threatening way, or puns, or encouragement, or personal stories, or extra information on a post. That makes me feel good. Thank you all for being a part of Neatorama! Here's a look at the things that happened this past week.

Eddie Deezen wrote about It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World: Greatest Slapstick Comedy Ever?

Alex introduce us to Paolo Troilo's Amazing Fingerpainting.

The Forbidden Island came from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader.

The Annals of Improbable Research contributed Canine Reactions to the Mona Lisa.

A Brief and Incomplete History of the Swimsuit was from mental_floss magazine.

Hy Conrad brought us another Whodunit, called The Crystal Vanishes.

This week's What Is It? game featured a gadget that turned out to be an old-fashioned crimper for can lids. After many serious and no-so-serious guesses, ladybugs finally had the correct answer. The funniest answer was from Randall, who said,

This is a clock unwinder. In Victorian time it was feared that a clock left wound over the new year eve would cause infertility. The first thing that Victorian men would do on the New Years day was get out of bed to wind and set the clock. THe would then go back to bed and test for infertility. As a result of this pratice the clock unwinder was considered a very risque' item great care was taken to keep it stored descreetly. You can still find them in secret cubbyholes under staircases in older homes, covered with dust, biding their time.

That's good for a t-shirt, too! See the answers to all the mystery items of the week at the What Is It? blog.

We had one featured pet over at Lifestyles of the Cute and Cuddly this week: her name is Zodi, and you can see her here snoozing in the car. Check out that sweet mustache! Send a picture of your pet to tips@neatorama.com to get them on as a featured pet, too!

The post that had the most comments was The Forbidden Island, followed by How to Make an Edible Strawberry Balloon from Strawberries, and for third place, there was a tie between Go to the Vogue Website and Enter the Konami Code and Which Is Better for Grilling: Charcoal or Gas?

The comment of the week was when humblehern suggested the perfect song to go with the Truck Stuck in the Mud post. The video is there for you to enjoy.

The most popular post of the week by far was The Forbidden Island. Coming in second was US Air Force My Little Pony Patch Is Apparently Real, and Opposite Words came in third.

The most hearted post was The Forbidden Island. Then in second place was A Man and His Duck, with I've Never Related So Much to a Little Piglet in third.

Tied for the most emailed post of the week were The 10 Worst Car Features Ever Made and The Bacon Weave Elvis Sandwich. The Forbidden Island came in third.

All in all, The Forbidden Island was the standout post of the week. Thanks to everyone who passed the link around!

Have you been to Neatorama's Pinterest boards lately? Not only do we have items from Neatorama categorized for your interests, but also extra links from all over, sorted just so you can find what you're interested in -and you can follow each separately, like a custom-designed feed. Check it out!

If go to the NeatoShop quite a bit, you can save yourself some time when you just want to browse by first checking out the section of what's new, and also the section of what's on sale to get the latest and best bargains. If you haven't been there in a long time, you'll need to look at everything! If you're looking for something specific, the categories on the left should help you narrow the search.

And as always, if you have any suggestions, feedback, kudos, complaints, or trouble with Neatorama, please let us know! It's our goal to bring you the best of what's neat on Neatorama.

Jay-Z's Got 99 Problems

Posted: 13 Jul 2013 05:16 AM PDT

If you know anything about Jay-Z, then you know he's got 99 problems, but a female certainly isn't one. As for what those problems are, a new Tumblr, probs99, is seeking to illustrate all of them so we can better relate with Beyonce's man.

The brilliant illustrations are created by Ali Graham.

Bobby Petersen, Tom Gottelier and Edward Thomas designed the Pulp Paper Helmet. It's made of recycled newspapers. Their helmet is meant for short term use and will survive only 6 hours in the rain. But once it starts to break down, you can just recycle it again.

Busted by a Fart

Posted: 15 Jul 2013 02:00 AM PDT

It's a crime solved ... by a fart! When a policeman kept on farting in a police car, his colleagues were forced to roll down the window to escape the smell. But instead of fresh air, the waft of marijuana drifted in.

Metro has the story:

‘All three officers’ suspicions were raised and they left the car to get some fresh air and find the cause of the cannabis smell.

‘Imagine the surprise on the faces of the occupants of the house further along the road when the officers, following their noses, found a cannabis factory with a crop worth £12,000.’

Seven people at the property in Leicester were arrested.

Oh, and the cop who kept on farting? Metro explains:

The officer with the wind problem had been on a high-protein diet after taking up body building.

Napkin Cartoons

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 10:00 PM PDT

John Matta draws cartoons on napkins daily. The results are simple and hilarious. In an interview about his work, Matta tells the story of how he got started:

Two years ago I was eating at a Subway and watching a mother demand that the guy behind the counter give her free meat samples. She wanted to let her little boy taste them before ordering. If the child didn’t like the meat, he’d spit it out on the counter. If he liked the meat, he’d also spit it out on the counter, accompanied by an approving grunt.

It was the most wonderful thing I’d ever witnessed. I felt I had to document the event so I drew it on a napkin. Then I started drawing more stuff on napkins. I kept showing them to my wife and finally she said, "You should really show these to other people besides me." So I set up a blog and began posting them.

You can find his full archive of cartoons at the link. Be warned: you'll be there for at least an hour laughing.

I Was Killed By A Shark In <i>Sharknado</i>

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 07:00 PM PDT

Ryan Budds is a comedian who recently moved to California. He won a contest at a small comedy club, and one of the prizes was a walk-on role in an Asylum film. Budds looked up what Asylum does, so he knew what to expect, but he didn't expect that they would give him a real job.

I walked into The Asylum’s production office the next day and inquired about my prize, finding out that they had no idea of the agreement with the comedy club. One of the head honchos, David Latt, came out to talk to me (on rollerblades) and mentioned that he didn’t know about the contest but that he’d be happy to kill me off in their next film. We made plans to have me back on the big day, but I inquired further. “Hey, do you need an extra production assistant for that movie?” And they said, “Yep. You’re hired.”

And that's how Budds came to be both infront of the camera and behind the scenes of the SyFy original movie Sharknado. He played the guy on the beach with his leg chomped off early in the film. Read his account of the filming at Warming Glow. Link

Teenager Saves Kidnapped Little Girl

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 05:00 PM PDT

Temar Boggs of Gable Park Woods, Pennsylvania, heard that police and firefighters were frantically searching his neighborhood for a kidnapped 5-year old girl. He and his friends got on their bikes and joined in the search. During their search they encountered a driver behaving suspiciously:

The car was on Gable Park and turned around when it got near the top of a hill toward Millersville Pike, where Boggs said several police officers were gathered with the kind of cart used to carry an injured football player off the field.

The driver, an older white man, then began quickly turning onto and out of side streets connecting to Gable Park, Boggs said.

The neighborhood is something of a maze; many of its streets are cul-de-sacs.

Boggs got close enough to the car to see a little girl inside. Garcia was nearby.

The driver looked at Boggs and Garcia, then stopped the car at Gable Park and Betz Farm Road and pushed the girl out of the car. The driver then drove off, Boggs said.

Boggs said he didn't see where the car went.

"She runs to my arms and said, 'I need to see my mommy,' " Boggs said.

Boggs scooped the girl onto his shoulders and began riding the bike toward home, but then decided that wasn't safe, so he carried her and walked back while Garcia pedaled along, guiding the bike Boggs had been using.

Send Pizza

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT

Two-year-old Hazel is undergoing treatment for neuroblastoma at Children's Hospital in L.A. As a lark, her family helped her tape "Please Send Pizza" in her window. Yesterday, redditor ashortstorylong spotted the sign in the window of the hospital and took a picture. The picture made the front page and then went viral on social media. One thing led to another, and the fourth floor of the hospital received dozens of pizzas- enough pizzas for everyone!

The hospital has issued a statement thanking donors, but says no more pizzas are needed. Link

Life-sized LIFE

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT

The game of LIFE is about to get larger - much larger. Life-sized, in fact!

The island of Yoron in Japan will host a life-size version of LIFE board game, where players will shuttle across the island in a bus to play along:

As 2013 marks the 45th anniversary of the Game of Life in Japan, one island has decided to celebrate by turning the entire place into one big Game of Life board complete with spinners and play money.

The life-sized Game of Life will be held from 20 July to 16 September on Yoron Island located just North of Okinawa. The impetus for this plan was the fact that the island is shaped like that hilly part of the game board where the spinner sits.

Throughout these summer months, players will be given a map showing the game squares and an allotment of fake money like that used in the game. The players will then spin one of four wheels located around the island and proceed to that spot. At the end of the game, any play money left over can be converted into gift certificates.

Brewery Comes to the Rescue

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 02:00 PM PDT

The staff at Falmouth Aquarium in Cornwall, UK, began worrying about its animals when temperatures rose 3°C above normal and the marine creatures were showing signs of stress. They called on St. Austell Brewery for assistance.

The aquarium's inhabitants, which include a lobster named Gary, only had a matter of time before they overheated and died according to marine biologist Chloe Kingston who works there.

However, after an emergency call to the brewery, the oddly tried-and-tested method of using beer chilling equipment to cool the tanks has worked wonders.

She said: "It's a massive relief, I was really worried when I realised our current chillers weren't coping.

"So far the fish are just looking a bit grumpy but they wouldn't be able to stand long-term exposure to these temperatures – especially with the hot spell coming up.

"What the St Austell Brewery has done is literally save our fish at the aquarium.

The brewery has finished installing the equipment, which will be a permanent donation to the aquarium. Link  -via Arbroath

Defining a Hot Dog

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT

When is a hot dog, a hot dog? When the law says so!

When hot-dog cart owners are being threatened by closure by health inspectors, the Assembly Health Committee in California came up with the legal definition of a hot dog to help them out:

The proposed change to state health laws spells it out: "'Hot dog' means a whole, cured, cooked sausage that is skinless or stuffed in a casing that may be known as a frankfurter, frank, furter, wiener, red hot, Vienna, bologna, garlic bologna or knockwurst and that may be served in a bun or roll." [...]

The definition is needed so health departments can hold hot-dog vendors, who boil already cooked wieners, to a less-stringent sanitation standard than food stands that cook raw foods, such as bratwurst, said Justin Malan of the California Assn. of Environmental Health Administrators.

Marc Lifsher of the Los Angeles Times explains: Link

Well, at least they didn't define watermelon as a vegetable or declare pi as 3.

Robot That Tears Down And Recycles Buildings

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 07:00 AM PDT

A new concept in robotics may improve the efficiency of building demolition and recycling. Swedish student designer Omer Haciomeroglu says that the robot called ERO is a smart recycling robot like Wall-E.

The ERO can “efficiently disassemble concrete structures without any waste, dust or separation and enable reclaimed building materials to be reused for new prefabricated concrete buildings”.

This is achieved using high-powered water jets to crack the concrete. The aggregate cement and water is then sucked up and separated. The water is recycled back into the system, while clean aggregate is packed and sent to concrete precast stations for reuse. The rebar can then be cleaned and cut on the spot to be reused.

A fleet of ERO robots working together would be able to scan the surroundings and plan a route of action. Once they start working, the robots can “literally erase a building”.

If you ask me, the concept art looks more like the Nu-Nu from The Teletubbies than Wall-E. Get a better look at DesignTaxi. Link -via Digg

Attached Earrings

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT

For her thesis work, Ravelry member Chiko knitted this pair of earrings for the twins among you. She writes:

This piece, entitled Attached, is about the closeness that twins share during childhood. The little sweater sleeves grow into one another to emphasize this connection, and the piece (which is purely conceptual, rather than functional jewellery) actually physically attaches the wearers.

The theme of my thesis work is about the unique bond that twins share, and depicts four “portraits” of me and my sister’s relationship at different stages in our lives so far.

The Major Key to Your Better Future is You
byJim Rohn

Of all the things that can have an effect on your future, I believe personal growth is the greatest. We can talk about sales growth, profit growth, asset growth, but all of this probably will not happen without personal growth. It’s really the open door to it all. In fact I’d like to have you memorize a most important phrase. Here it is, “The major key to your better future is YOU.” Let me repeat that. “The major key to your better future is YOU.” Put that someplace you can see it every day, in the bathroom, in the kitchen, at the office, anywhere where you can see it every day. The major key to your better future is YOU. Try to remember that every day you live and think about it. The major key is YOU.

Now, there are many things that will help your better future. If you belong to a strong, dynamic, progressive company, that would help. If the company has good products and services you are proud of, that would certainly help. If there were good sales aids, that would help, good training would certainly help. If there is strong leadership, that will certainly help. All of these things will help, and of course, if it doesn’t storm, that will help. If your car doesn’t break down, that will help. If the kids don’t get sick, that will help. If the neighbors stay halfway civil, that will help. If your relatives don’t bug you, that will help. If it isn’t too cold, if it isn’t too hot, all those things will help your better future. And if prices don’t go much higher and if taxes don’t get much heavier, that will help. And if the economy stays stable, those things will all help. We could go on and on with the list; but remember this, the list of things that I’ve just covered and many more—all put together—play a minor role in your better future.

Challenge to Succeed

The major key to your better future is you. Lock your mind onto that. This is a super-important point to remember. The major key is you. A friend of mine has always answered when asked, “How do you develop an above-average income?” by saying, “Simple. Become an above-average person. Work on you.” My friend says, “Develop an above-average handshake.” He says, “A lot of people want to be successful, and they don’t even work on their handshake. As easy as that would be to start, they let it slide. They don’t understand.” My friend says, “Develop an above-average smile. Develop an above-average excitement. Develop an above-average dedication. Develop an above-average interest in other people.” He says, “To have more, become more.” Remember; work harder on yourself than you do on your job. For a long time in my life, I didn’t have this figured out.

Strangely enough, with two different people in the same company, one may earn an extra $100 a month, and the other may earn a $1,000. What could possibly be the difference? If the products were the same, if the training was the same, if they both had the same literature, the same tools. If they both had the same teacher, the same compensation plan, if they both attended the same meetings, why would one person earn the $100 per month and the other person earn the $1,000? Remember, here is the difference: The difference is personal—inside, not outside, inside.

You see the real difference is inside you. In fact, the difference IS you. Someone once said, “The magic is not in the products. The magic is not in the literature. The magic is not in the film. There isn’t a magic meeting, but the magic that makes things better is inside you.” And personal growth makes this magic work for you.

The magic is in believing. The magic is in daring. The magic is in trying. The real magic is in persevering. The magic is in accepting. It’s in working. The magic is in thinking. There is magic in a handshake. There is magic in a smile. There is magic in excitement and determination. There is real magic in compassion and caring and sharing. There is unusual magic in strong feeling. You see, all that comes from inside, not outside. So the difference is inside you. The real difference is you. You are the major key to your better future.

Vitamins for the MindbyJim Rohn

Sowing & Reaping

You must get good at one of two things: sowing in the spring or begging in the fall.

God has the tough end of the deal. What if instead of planting the seed you had to make the tree? That would keep you up late at night, trying to figure that one out.

Plant, don't chant.

One of my good friends always says, “Things don't just happen; things happen just.”

The soil says, “Don't bring me your need, bring me your seed.”

“Vitamins for the Mind” is a weekly sampling of original quotes on a specific topic taken from The Treasury of Quotes by Jim Rohn. The burgundy hardbound book with gold-foil lettering is a collection of more than 365 quotes on 60 topics gathered from Jim’s personal journals, seminars and books and spanning more than 40 years.

Putting Fear in Its Place
by Jack Canfield

Feeling fear is a very natural part of living. Fear is a helpful emotion, as it tells you when you need to be extra careful, keenly aware, and cautious. Fear is not an emotion that is telling you to stop. Acknowledging fear helps you know when you are stepping out of your comfort zone.  It brings your awareness to areas where you could improve and grow. Confronting your fears is a very necessary step in achieving success. There is no other way.

Making the Shift

Successful people also feel fear, yet they don’t let it discourage them from moving forward. They realize that fear is a feeling telling them they are about to do something new, something that they are not especially good at yet. For this reason they know they should pay extra attention to how it should be done, research the process, and plan out the steps they will take to accomplish it. And as they go through the process, they can see what worked and what didn’t.

To be successful you must be willing to be afraid because fear accompanies risk. Without taking risks you will not achieve your dreams. But also realize that so many of your fears are self-created. You imagine a horrible outcome to your new experience and that image is the fear that holds you back. Realize that all new experiences will be slightly scary, but also acknowledge that what it is you are afraid of is a self-created image of what is going to happen. Acknowledge that you are imagining the worst and that you really have no idea what will happen. You have a choice in what you let your mind dwell on. If you’re going to let yourself visualize the worst, then make sure you let yourself visualize the desired outcome, too!

If a fear is too great for you to overcome, try breaking it down into smaller challenges. Try starting out doing the parts of the project that don’t scare you so much. You need to give a speech in front of a large group?  Try giving your speech in front of a small group of people who care for you. Work your way up until you are able to feel the fear but still move forward. As you do you will build your confidence and eventually you won’t feel fear surrounding those issues because you’ll have done them enough to count it as a skill.

As you move toward your goal, don’t attach yourself so much to the outcomes. Keep moving toward your dream doing everything you can to create what you want, then let it go and see what shows up. Sometimes the universe will have a better idea in mind for you and present a better opportunity when you were expecting something completely different. Don’t let fear keep you from moving forward. Even if the horrible outcome that you imagined happens, the universe will always provide for you another way to succeed.  So be on the look-out.

Acknowledge your fear. Treat it like a child, hold its hand and take it with you. Trust that no matter what occurs, you are smart enough and strong enough to keep looking for opportunities. If you are willing to try new experiences in spite of your fears, then more new experiences will present themselves for you to try. And the more you try, the more you are likely to succeed!

“The ultimate reason for setting goals is to entice you to become the person it takes to achieve them.” – Jim Rohn

The Scrappy History of Paper Dolls

Posted: 15 Jul 2013 08:00 PM PDT

Paper dolls date from the 18th century, beginning as political satire and swiftly earning their fashion paper clothing. With the invention of lithograph printing, they went mainstream, and were even made for children to play with. The variety of paper dolls was endless.

For many collectors, artistry isn’t the only draw—it’s the ghost of a paper doll’s previous owner that makes the vintage objects so appealing. Whether from 20 or 200 years ago, the personalities of these little girls and boys are particularly strong in handmade paper dolls, often constructed by children whose parents couldn’t afford to purchase toys.

A common variety of handmade paper dolls are “catalog dolls,” made from discarded department-store catalogs, like the ubiquitous tomes from Sears, Roebuck & Co. Children would carefully cut around a model, and then find various items of clothing that best aligned with the illustrated or photographed model’s limbs.

Other kids traced images from books, or created drawings entirely from their own imaginations. “The best is when you find a paper doll where the child made her own clothes for it, or actually created her own doll,” says Ocasio. “Some of those handmade dolls are so exquisitely done, they’re in the realm of folk art.”

Paper dolls changed over time to reflect the world as it was. Old paper dolls may not come with provenance telling who owned them, but you can often tell the era by the clothing they wore. Read about paper dolls through history at Collectors Weekly. Link

The Mystery of the Rare Male Sea Monkey

Posted: 15 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT

Despite what you were shown on the box, sea monkeys, or brine shrimp, are female. They reproduce asexually for the most part, and their offspring are also female. They are not the only species to reproduce asexually (about one in 10,000 animal species is male-free), but brine shrimp are unique: among the vast swarms of females, you'll find a rare male.

The males were exceedingly rare–around one in thousand in many cases, and around one in a hundred in a few. And yet they were healthy and fertile. The males couldn’t mate with females of their own population, but they readily had sex with other species. What’s more, their hybrid offspring were healthy and fertile, too.

If asexual animal species are rare, species with asexual females and rare males are even more rare. Only a few other examples have turned up, such as certain populations of snails in New Zealand. Maccari and her colleagues don’t think there’s a clear answer to why these rare males exist. But there are a few plausible possibilities.

Carl Zimmer presents a few possible reasons for the discrepancy -and they are all weird. Link

The Sport of Snowshoe Baseball

(Photo: John Hart/State Journal)

It's summer in Wisconsin, so it's time to break out the snowshoes and go play baseball. For 52 years, people in the town of Lake Tomahawk have played this baseball variant on an infield covered with wood chips and an outfield covered with gravel. Barry Adams of the State Journal describes it:

The game has been played here for 52 years, bases are 55 feet apart instead of the traditional 60 feet, and which team scores the most runs rarely matters. [...]

The league got its start in 1961 when the town chairman was looking for a way to draw more tourists to the area.

Snowshoe baseball had been played on area lakes in the winter in the 1940s and 1950s, so to replicate the game in the summer, wood chips and shavings were brought in to cover a softball field.

New Beauty Treatment: Snail Facial Massage

You can already get a beauty cream made of snails. This treatment offered by the Ci:z Medical Group in Tokyo just removes the intermediary process:

According to a Ci:z.Labo spokesperson, the snails on your face feel a little ticklish at first, but they gradually start to stick onto your skin and after a while, they feel nice and cool on your face. Umm, okay, I think I’ll take their word for it and not try it myself in this case.

Like most beauty treatments, the escargot regimen doesn’t come cheap, with the 60 minute regular course priced at 24,150 yen (US$240) and the additional live snail experience option costing another 10,500 yen (US$100). Since the snails require careful management, the celeb escargot course is currently available only at the main Ci:z.Labo salon in Ebisu.

'I‘ve always been fascinated by objects, and I think somehow every person is represented by their personal objects, the objects they choose, the ones they are attached to, and the way they use them tells you a story,'

'When I started doing this project, I felt that the objects belonged to my relatives, starting from the ones of my beloved grandparents, were still full of energy and were capable of reminding me moments I shared with them. I started to feel the need to use them to go back to a precise memory. In order to do that I started to reorganize these objects, to recall a specific image I had of that person.

TV's Father: Philo T. Farnsworth

Posted: 15 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT

The following article is from the bookUncle John's Bathroom Reader Tunes Into TV.

On a spring day in 1920 in Rigby, Idaho, a farm boy named Philo took a break from his plowing and invented television. Then his amazing invention was stolen from him.

ALONE IN HIS FIELD

Electricity and radio in 1920 were like computers in the 1970s: exciting new innovations into which the technologically minded put their dreams, mental energy, and considerable spare time. Fourteen-year-old Philo Taylor Farnsworth -tall, skinny, and full of ideas- was already showing promise as an electricity prodigy. Two years earlier, shortly after he'd seen an electric light for the first time, he'd re-wired a burned out motor and presented his family with its first automatic washing machine.

Living on a farm meant lots of tedious chores, which gave Philo plenty of time to think. As he was plowing a field one day, he started wondering if it was possible for radios to broadcast moving pictures as well as sound.

SPINNING THE WHEELS

Philo certainly wasn't the first person to come up with the idea of sending images over the air. He'd found a stack of science magazines in the attic (they were there when his family moved in), with articles about European experimenters trying to do just that. One of the more promising attempts: German inventor Paul Nipkow had rigged a spinning wheel mounted on a lit picture, dotted with tiny pinholes. As the hand-cranked wheel spun rapidly in front of a brightly-lit scene, the first pinhole let in a thin strip of light from the top of the scene, the next let in another thin strip, and so on- thus the entire scene was rapidly scanned from top to bottom over and over again.

How did that make TV? The thin strips of light landed on photosensitive material that generated a little surge of electricity when the light hit it. The brighter the light, the more juice was produced; connected electrically to that wheel was another wheel spinning at exactly the same rate of speed while transforming the electric signals back into light again. Demonstrations showed promise: Images, while ill-defined, could be recognized and transmitted.

PLOWING AHEAD

Philo thought about the spinning wheel device as he plowed. He felt it was a great idea but knew it would never lead to broadcasting images. First of all, the two wheels would have to spin at exactly the same rate all the time, or the images would be lost. That can easily be managed if the wheels are a few feet apart in a laboratory, but how do you maintain the same speed if the wheels are hundreds of miles apart, the transmitter in one place and the receiver in a home? And if it was used in large-scale broadcasting, every wheel on every receiver would have to be synchronized -a near-impossible feat.

A man watching mechanical TV. At right, a 1928 image of Felix the Cat broadcast mechanically.

Philo knew there had to be a better approach, one that wouldn't require wheels or mass synchronization. That's when, according to legend, he stopped plowing and looked around -his plow had created equally spaced parallel lines all over the entire field. He'd read that scientists could manipulate the motion of an electron thousands of time per second in a vacuum tube, so he looked at the field and saw a large vacuum tube acting as a screen. And "plowing" that field was a thin ray of light, pulled by alternating magnetic fields, moving across the screen in superfast "furrows" while lighting up selected pieces along each furrow. Phil realized that if this were done in a fraction of a second and repeated, the human eye would perceive motion.

Over the next few months, Philo thought about his vision some more and realized that if he scanned the picture electronically instead of mechanically, he could add more speed and more high-definition scan lines (the "furrows") -maybe 30 frames a second and 500 lines that European researchers like Nipkow had obtained.

SHOW ME THE MONEY

Farnsworth continued to research and refine his ideas in his spare time, eventually enrolling in Brigham Young University at age 17. He had access to laboratories and like-minded students, but the problem was funding. Nobody wanted to blow money on the fantastical invention of a self-taught farm boy trying to outdo some of the greatest scientists of Europe.

His luck changed when he joined the Community Chest, a charity group at BYU. A couple of the organization's directors were philanthropists from California, and one of Farnsworth's friends told them about his ideas. To his surprise, they agreed to provide modest funding to set him up in California. Farnsworth moved west and rented a 30-by-30-foot lab in San Francisco. He had just turned 19 years old.

Farnsworth and a small staff diligently experimented with electricity, vacuum tubes, and electrons in the lab for three years. His backers became impatient, having yet to receive a return on the $1,000 a month it cost to keep the research afloat. Finally, in late 1927, Farnsworth's team projected a line of light into a camera behind a photographic slide, and sent it to a screen. Seven months later, in May 1928, Farnsworth presented more than a line of light -he transmitted an image. Fittingly enough, it was a dollar sign.

SMEAR TACTICS

When word got out that a guy working on his own in San Francisco accomplished a system for broadcasting and receiving images with electric signals, one man saw red: David Sarnoff, an executive with the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), in charge of NBC Radio, the company's emerging radio network and TV development. Sarnoff had been trying the same thing, spending years and millions of dollars on a staff of 60, headed by inventor Vladimir Zworykin. While working with RCA, Zworykin had applied for a patent in 1923 for a rudimentary electronic television system but had been turned down by the patent office because there was no evidence that he could produce a working device. He tried again in 1925 with some changes, including a way of producing color, and was eventually awarded a patent in 1928 for the technology, even though it didn't actually work. It was at that time that Farnsworth's developments went public.

Under Sarnoff's direction, RCA amassed a busy staff of patent lawyers who sued anybody stepping on what they considered their turf. They had hounded and financially ruined several inventor who wouldn't sell out to them; they figured they would make similar short work of young Farnsworth.

BATTLE OF THE STARS

When Farnsworth was granted a patent in his television system in 1928, Sarnoff declared war. RCA launched a publicity campaign lauding Zworykin as the "true father" of the coming television age and sent employees to harass Farnsworth when he made public appearances. It worked -potential licensors of the technology were confused about who actually held the rights.

Eventually, RCA's actions goaded Farnsworth into filing a patent clarification suit, an expensive proposition in which he would have to prove to a judge that his inventions (and the documentation of them) had come first. RCA also sued Farnsworth for patent infringement based on the application Zworykin had made in 1923 for his own original, unworkable system.

PHILO'S DOUGH

Farnsworth fought back -he hired excellent patent attorneys that he couldn't afford, hoping to recoup his losses from licensing when his patent was cleared. To raise money, he went overseas and sold the rights to his patents in England and Germany, where RCA couldn't easily interfere. (Cameras developed by Farnsworth broadcast the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.) Farnsworth's lawyers tracked down witnesses to back up his claims, including the science teacher he had run his ideas past in high school.

The testimony of science teacher Justin Tolman was enough to demolish RCA's patent infringement claim. After describing his conversation with the teenage Farnsworth, he pulled out a rumpled, yellow piece of paper out of his coat pocket and explained, "This was made for me by Philo in early 1922." The drawing showed Farnsworth's idea for his "Image Dissector" camera, drawn more than a year before Zworykin had applied for his patent.

Recreation of Farnsworth's original sketch for his science teacher.

The court ruled for Farnsworth. He now had six clear patents and licensing rights to collect payment from any company -including RCA- that wanted to make television equipment based on them.

PLAYING DIRTY

RCA was determined to exact vengeance. While quietly negotiating the rights to use Farnsworth's patents, eventually agreeing to pay a million dollars up front and a royalty in every RCA receiver sold, the company embarked on a publicity blitz. Most notably, President Franklin Roosevelt appeared at their pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair in New York City. The event was aired to the handful of TV sets in existence at the time -one of the first-ever widespread broadcasts. Sarnoff gave a bold speech announcing RCA's intention to begin regular TV programming, and claimed the company had developed the technology itself.

Sarnoff at the World's Fair.

The press took him at his word and trumpeted RCA's "breakthrough" across the land. It was the first step in a long campaign to erase Farnsworth's name from the history of television, successfully replacing it with the names of Sarnoff and Zworykin. It worked so well that even now, with the record finally set straight and even a postage stamp honoring Farnsworth, some sources still mistakenly list Zworykin as the "inventor of television."

By the time Farnsworth had definitely established his claims to his patents, it was 1939. However, the patents had been granted in 1928 and, since patents lasted for only 17 years at that point, his time to profit from his invention was more than half over. He was still deep in debt and ready make some money. Television manufacturers were lining up to make deals. In a few more years, he expected that that he would be not just solvent but fabulously wealthy.

BLITZKRIEG FLOP

Then something happened that was even bigger and more financially disastrous than RCA's campaign: World War II. In 1941 -year 13 of Farnsworth's 17-year patents-  the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. When the United States entered the war, the government shut down the manufacture of "nonessential" products, especially those whose components and engineers were needed for the war effort. Like televisions.

As it sunk in to Farnsworth that his invention could never pay out, he went into a deep depression -he drank, stopped eating, and shrank to 100 pounds. It didn't help that Sarnoff convinced the Radio Television Manufacturers Association to honor him as "the father of television" and instructed his employees to always add "The Inventor of Television" to any public mentions of Zworykin.

MOVING FORWARD

The war ended in 1945, and TV manufacturing and development resumed, but Farnsworth's patents had expired. Adding insult to injury was what he saw being broadcast. Farnsworth had cherished a belief that his invention would lead to widespread education, culture, and understanding of other people. Instead it featured commercials for cars, headache remedies, and beer, sandwiched between soap operas, game shows, and wrestling matches.

With the help of his family and new ideas for inventions, Farnsworth eventually regained his emotional equilibrium. He went on to hold almost 300 patents on products as diverse as a baby incubator, a gastroscope, an electron microscope, and even a small nuclear fusion device.

INTO THE FUTURE

Finally, two years before he died, Farnsworth was able to experience a father's pride as his ne'er-do-well child lived up to everything he hoped. On July 20, 1969, the inventor joined much of the world in watching a live broadcast as astronauts stepped onto the moon for the very first time. When it was over, he turned to his wife and said, "This has made it all worthwhile."

Years of disappointment had soured Farnsworth on television, and he rarely watched it before his death in 1971. However, he did appear on TV twice. Once was an interview at the local station in Rigby, Idaho, near where he had invented TV as a boy. The other was as the mystery guest "Dr. X" on I've Got A Secret, in which celebrity contestants attempted to guess his accomplishment using only yes-or-no questions. When the panel couldn't guess his secret, he won $80 and a carton of Winston cigarettes.

What the Health Care Reform Delay Means for You

July 16, 2013 - Vol. 6 Issue 18

Pause—because that’s what the government just did. The Obama administration has delayed the “employer mandate” component of the Affordable Care Act for one year, which means employers have one more year until they are required to provide health insurance to their employees.

The 2,000-plus page document, with all its components and provisions and mandates, is nothing but daunting, and health care reform has been a whirlwind of confusion for business owners. So small-business expert Rieva Lesonsky is here to answer questions about the reform, its delay and what it means for small businesses.

SUCCESS: There has been a lot of confusion surrounding health care reform's "Employer Mandate" component. What is it and how does its delay affect small businesses?

Lesonsky: First the good news. The so-called “Employer Mandate” provision of the Affordable Care Act does not affect most small businesses at all. Only businesses with 50 or more employees are affected by the employer mandate. Most small businesses have less than 20 employees.

The intention of the employer mandate is to make sure midsized and large companies provide health care insurance to their employees—and impose penalties on companies that don’t. More than 90 percent of companies with 50 or more employees already offer health insurance, but the administration didn’t want these businesses to stop providing insurance and move their employees to the government subsidized health insurance "exchanges," as they're called.

For the overwhelming majority of small businesses the delay will not affect them at all.

Be More Selfish
byDarren Hardy

You are on a plane.
It suddenly loses cabin pressure.
The oxygen masks drop down.

The elderly woman next to you panics.
You help her put her mask on.

Then you see the little kid behind you crying.
You help him, then his mother, then his little sister...

Then, nothing. You're dead.
It's great to be a hero.
But a dead hero? Not so much.

Sometimes being selfish is the most selfless thing you can do. We are taught this every time we board a plane. But still, it seems we just aren’t getting it.

If you want to achieve the highest level of performance in business or your personal life, you need to know that it's okay to be selfish, it’s essential. It’s a matter of life or death!

One of my favorite quotes from my mentor Jim Rohn is, “You take care of you for me and I’ll take care of me for you.” Selfishness can be the most serving thing you can do for another.

“The man who does not value himself, cannot value anything or anyone.”
— Ayn Rand

Those we present on the cover of SUCCESS are some of the most positively impacting, society-improving and humanity-advancing people on the planet. People likeSteve Jobs, Richard Branson, Elon Musk, Peter Diamandis, Michael Bloomberg, Mehmet Oz, Howard Schultz, Maria Shriver and Joel Osteen come to mind.

What you might be surprised to know is the common trait of today's most successful achievers and “universe denters” is selfishness—not in abusing or violating others, but in putting themselves and their goals first. They take care of their minds, bodies and souls. They know that you cannot achieve greatness if you are tired, uninspired, angry or wound up.

To operate at high-performance levels, you have to prepare and protect yourself from all that doesn’t support your most important goals, objectives and vision.

So here are 5 Rules to Being Selfish, in reverse order:

Vigilante Pedestrian Safety

Posted: 17 Jul 2013 04:00 AM PDT

Photo: @lizkaster - via KFnet in T-Town

Crossing the street can be quite dangerous, so when the city of Tacoma, Washington, didn't do anything to make it safer for pedestrians, vigilantes took matters into their own hands and painted rogue crosswalks and a bike lane.

According to Lewis Kamb of The Nws Tribune:

Some business owners and residents in the burgeoning neighborhood just north of City Hall said the unauthorized crosswalk — which unidentified parties painted on the west side of St. Helens Avenue between Sixth Avenue and Baker Street — illustrates a growing frustration with the city.

“We have a lot of cars just blowing through here, and we’re concerned,” said Morgan Alexander, owner of the nearby Amocat Café. “We actually asked the city to take some action. But they really haven’t done anything.”

Well, the accusation that the City wasn't doing anything is not technically correct: they sprang into action ... and erased the rogue crosswalks (which cost the city thousands of dollars in public works). They've also threatened to pursue legal action against this form of "vandalism." Word on the street is that they're analyzing paint chips and such.

But according to RR Anderson of The Tacomic, the vigilante crosswalk bandit, whoever he is, is not going to let the city walk all over him:

The Supermassive Vacuum Cleaner At the Edge of the Known Universe

Posted: 17 Jul 2013 03:00 AM PDT

All we know about the universe is in what is called "the observable universe," because there's much beyond what even the most powerful modern telescopes and data-retrieval systems can detect. And something out there is exerting power over other things we can observe. We can't see it, and we don't know what it is, because it's so far away.

In recent years, scientists began noticing something a little bit off about the structure of the universe. By analyzing the light from distant galaxies, they were able to tell the relative speed and direction in which these objects were moving. The strange thing is that, rather than flying apart like most things in the universe, some of these distant galactic clusters appear to be caught up in a sort of current, speeding at unimaginable velocities (about two million miles per hour) along a specific path. Scientists have coined this phenomenon “dark flow” because, honestly, they really don’t know what’s causing it.

For gravity to be acting on these clusters the way that it seems to be, there would have to be something massive waiting at the end of the path. By massive, we mean something potentially much bigger than anything that we’ve ever observed in the known universe; something big enough to absolutely dwarf the galactic clusters being sucked towards it like dust to a vacuum cleaner.

The Death of Chang and Eng, Conjoined Twins Until the Last

Posted: 17 Jul 2013 01:00 AM PDT

We all know the basics of the story of Chang and Eng Bunker, the "Siamese Twins" who toured with freak shows in the 1800s, then settled down as farmers and family men until their deaths. But the details of their last years may be a story you've never heard. Financial setbacks during the Civil War and the deaths of two of their children exacerbated Chang's alcoholism. The pair went back out on tour to raise funds, and to seek medical help.

In the last years of their life, with the knowledge that it might reach an end soon, the two became almost obsessed by the idea of a possible separation, dreading the moment when one would have to carry on with his brother’s corpse at his side. Tied up for life, Chang and Eng desired their own deaths. Separately. Sadly, the physician’s answers carried no hopes, as they all advised against severing their cartilaginous link. The procedure would likely result in a tremendous loss of blood and kill them both.

Upon their return to the United States, the situation was almost impossible. Chang had a fit which left him paralyzed and obliged Eng to prop his legs with straps and crutches in order to activate his brother’s legs like a puppeteer. Back in their village, both hopeless and frustrated, Chang and Eng kept having arguments with each other and begged Dr. Hollingsworths, the local physician, to split them apart. Yet a few months after, the same doctor was called down to their house to certify their deaths. On January 17, 1874, Chang left our world first, then Eng did too, three hours later, asking as a last favor that the dead body of his brother be pulled closer to him.

But that wasn't the end of the story. Find out what happened to the twins' bodies, and more, at Atlas Obscura. Link

Ten Steps For Buying A Used Car Without Getting Screwed

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 10:00 PM PDT

Jalopnik asked its readers for tips on buying used cars. The best of them have been compiled in a list every inexperienced car buyer should learn. Here's a sample:

Something to look for is a car that was purchased at the dealership where it was originally sold. This means a few things.

1. The customer had a good experience the first time they purchased, good enough that they would come back and do it again.
2. The service records may be available on the vehicle. Contrary to popular belief dealerships do not share service records with each other. The customer might keep them and if they did, that's typically the only way you'll know if the vehicle was taken care of. If the customer returned to the dealer they usually also use them for service.
3. The dealership knows the customer and can answer more detailed questions about the vehicle and how it was used.

A lot of it boils down to "take it slow and do your research," but the details will help a lot. Link -via Digg

Potty Training Fruit Snack

Jill of Kitchen Fun with My Three Sons is now potty training her third child. She made this cute and tasty snack to encourage him. To make your own, all you need is a banana, a pretzel stick and chocolate chips.

Or you could use chocolate syrup, I suppose. But if you need to, then maybe it's time to back off on the Miralax. As a veteran potty trainer, I'll tell you: finding that sweet spot between a toddler's total constipation and total diarrhea is very hard. I could go on at length, if you like.

A Journey Into Our Food System's Refrigerated-Warehouse Archipelago

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT

The vast majority of the food in your home depends upon a complicated, energy-dependent infrastructure called "the cold chain." Frozen, fresh, refrigerated, or preserved, at some point, getting that food from the point of origin to your table requires cold storage or transport. This is a system that people rarely see, and are barely aware of. An exhibit by Nicola Twilley on this invisible infrastructure called "Perishable: An Exploration of the Refrigerated Landscape of America" gives us a glimpse of the refrigerated landscape of the food-processing world. The Incredible Victorian-style Fashions of Africa’s Herero People

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT

The Germans moved into the area of what is now Namibia in southwest Africa in 1882, eventually occupying and displacing the Herero people and the Namaqua people, taking their land and their cattle, too. The original residents, whose ancestor had lived there for thousands of years, naturally rebelled.

The Herero Wars lasted until 1907, when the occupied peoples were defeated by General Lothar van Trotha, and forced into the desert, where the vast majority of them– ended up dying of starvation or dehydration.

Germany ruled the area until 1915, after which the surviving Herero women adopted the turn-of-the-century clothing style of the Germans, wearing the long dresses even today. It's a reminder of their former occupation, and a celebration of regaining their land. See more pictures at Death and Taxes. Link

Whodunit: The Unsafe Safe House

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT

The following is a Whodunit by Hy Conrad featuring Sherman Oliver Holmes, a mysterious crime solver and great-great-grandson of Sherlock Holmes. Can you solve the crime?

For all the help Sherman Holmes provided the police, he received little if any recognition. In fact, the officers he helped the most were often the first to make fun of his quirky personality. "They don't want people thinking some amateur is solving their eases," Sherman would say with a generous shrug. "I just wish I didn't have to sneak around eavesdropping all the time."

One of Sherman's most extreme eavesdropping cases involved hiding behind a coatrack for over an hour. On that day, his instincts for crime led him beyond a yellow-tape barricade and into the front hall of a police safe house, a normal looking home in a modest, pleasant-looking row house in which a mob witness had just been murdered.

From behind the safety of the coats, Sherman watched as a nervous rookie stood over the body of the strangled man. A minute later, Captain Loeb strode in, his baggy suit flapping in the breeze.

"I was here protecting the witness," stammered the rookie. "Then I got a call from your office, ordering me back to the station. I left him alone. By the time I figured out the call was a fake and rushed back here, Frankie was dead."

The captain remained calm. "Who all has keys to the front door?"

"Just me," answered the rookie. "The door locked automatically behind me. I told Frankie not to open up to anyone."

Captain Loeb examined the body. "Strangled from behind, meaning he probably trusted his assailant. Who would Frankie open the door for? Let's get them in here."

The first suspect to be brought in was Lou, the victim's brother-in-law. "Frankie sneaked a telephone call to me last night at work," Lou said, staring down at the corpse. "I'm a phone company operator. Frankie didn't tell me where he was. My wife is going to go nuts when she hears."

The second suspect was Barry Aiello, the secret mob informant who had talked Frankie into testifying. "I feel like I'm responsible," he sighed. "The mob was using all their contacts to find him." Barry bent down and examined the welts around the victim's neck. "Looks like a belt was used. Poor Frankie shouldn't have turned his back."

Captain Loeb had them both taken in for questioning, then crossed to the rack and grabbed his trench coat. "The commissioner's gonna have my head, but I suppose I gotta call him." Loeb had just pulled a notepad from his coat pocket when he saw a face staring out from behind Frankie's leather jacket. "Who in blazes are you?"

"Hi!" Sherman was so nervous, he momentarily forgot his English accent. "I'm so sorry. I know I'm trespassing, but..." He could think of only one way to redeem himself, and that was to hand them Frankie's killer.

WHO KILLED FRANKIE?

WHAT TIPPED SHERMAN OFF?

Dental Chair for Sale

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Doc Holliday is most famous for his friendship with gunslinger Wyatt Earp and for his participation in the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. But he was also a dentist, having earned a degree from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery. He practiced in various places in the American West, earning little as his patients were wary of the dentist's tuberculosis. Holiday opened a saloon in Las Vegas in 1879. Now a dentist chair found in Las Vegas and inscribed with the name John Holliday is up for auction.

The oak and leather mounted dental chair of Doc Holliday and associated equipment. Accompanied by a framed letter on Baker Gulch Mining Co., Las Vegas, Nevada stationary dated Oct 20, 1908. Statement of Donation: "When I rented my office above the apothecary on the Plaza, I removed a dental chair to make room for my own furnishings.I later noticed the name John Holliday on this chair. .........I now have learned that this is the same John Holliday, the famous shootist of a few years prior....I have also been informed that this was the last location that he practiced dentistry. I give this chair to the city free of charge in hope that a display of archives or a museum may use this infamous artifact. To this I affix my signature and seal. "

Well, maybe a museum will buy it. At the time of this writing, the bids are up to $2,000. Link -via Boing Boing

10 Lifehacks from 100 Years Ago

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT

From the 1880s to the 1940s, manufacturers put stiffening cards into cigarette packs, sometimes decorated with advertising, art, or trivia. A couple of companies put tips for better living on their cards (which are highly collectible now). Some of them are fascinating, like a tip for watering your houseplants while you're away:

"Fill a large pail with water, and stand it a little above the level of the plants and group round or near as many plants as practical. Loosely plait two or three strands of wool together, immerse completely in water, and place one end in the pail, weighted, and touching the bottom. Rest the other end on the soil: a separate plait of wool is advisable for each pot."

That's a siphon, using capillary action. Genius! I wonder if it works… but at least it won't kill anyone to try it out, unlike the instructions for felling a tree, which ends with pulling a tree down with ropes. Read more of these at mental_floss. Link

14 Great Geek Bouquets And Boutonnieres

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT

We cover a lot of geeky wedding stuff on Neatorama, but if you just can’t get enough nerdy wedding pictures (whether or not you’re in the midst of planning a wedding), here are some fantastic bouquets and boutonnieres perfect for any geeks ready to join together in matrimony.

Angry Birds

Etsy seller RBKCreations makes all kinds of awesome custom wedding bouquets and boutonnieres. This Angry Birds bouquet would be perfect for throwing to a crowd, but it would be even better if the bride used a slingshot for the bouquet toss.

Muppets

If you really want to do something creative with your bouquets, RBKCreations will even custom make a themed wedding bouquet just for you. Here is a sample from one custom order she made, with a Muppets theme. Personally though, if I were the bride, I’d be bummed I didn’t get any characters on my bouquet.

Mario

RBKCreations also makes these adorable Mario-inspired wedding bouquets with felt fire flowers and button-adorned mushrooms. She even makes matching bridesmaids bouquets and fire flower boutonnieres for the groom and his groomsmen.

Super Mario Galaxy

If you’re going to be married inside of a hobby and gaming store with a TARDIS as your altar, you’d better have a few other great geeky touches to your wedding as well. Fortunately, Laura and Calvin lived up to their self-proclaimed nerdom, incorporating lines from The Princess Bride into their vows, serving up Mario cupcakes for dessert and using a bouquet inspired by Super Mario Galaxy, complete with hovering stars and mushrooms.

Fire Flowers and Minifigs

Sarah and Chris geeked out their wedding with homemade fire flower bouquets and boutonnieres built with custom-made Lego Minifigs –Chris’ appears to be a tiny little He-Man. The groomsmen then completed their geektastic look with some sweet 8-bit ties.

Princess Peach

What character would better suit a gamer wedding with bright pink bouquets than Princess Peach? As if her tiny figure popping out of the bride’s flowers weren’t cute enough, the boutonnieres also featured a Mario character –little toad hiding behind a flower. Anna and Jonny’s wedding featured a variety of other adorable gaming touches as well, including guest gift boxes that look like puzzle boxes and centerpieces coming out of old NES cartridges.

My Bouquet Lollipop

Love candy almost as much as you love your sweetheart? Then this lollipop wedding bouquet would be perfect for ceremony, just as it was perfect for Melanie and Justin.

Now That’s Sweet

If you have such a sweet tooth that only three swirly lollipops in a bouquet seems like too few, then you’d certainly enjoy Julia’s bouquet that features nothing but lollipops and giant jawbreakers. The entire thing is so adorable that it’s easy to imagine Vanellope Von Schweetz of Wreck It Ralph carrying at her wedding –but let’s just hope she didn’t toss this heavy bouquet at a flock of single girls.

Maximum Geekdom Go

Flickr user ElsaWolf’s bouquet incorporates three distinct areas of geek culture –Doctor Who fandom, steampunk and a love of literature, specifically Sherlock Holmes. The bottom of the bouquet features a sonic screwdriver wrapped in copper wire to add a touch of steampunk flair and the flowers are made from pages torn from Sherlock Holmes stories.

Want to make your own paper roses out of a book that has particular meaning to you or your partner? Well, 100 Layer Cake has a fantastic how to guide to putting together your own bookish bouquet.

Avengers Assemble

This Avengers boutonniere is perfect for any grooms who happen to love comics. Best of all, each groomsman gets to choose the Avenger he likes the most –and while Offbeat Bride writer Jamie’s husband chose The Avengers, you could easily take inspiration from this and select your own favorite super hero team.

Nightwing and Batgirl

Laura and Seth wanted to save money on their wedding, so they opted to make the bouquet and boutonnieres themselves. As it turns out, this probably worked out for the best because the resulting bouquet and boutonnieres, made from the pages of comic books, perfectly suited their Nightwing and Batgirl themed wedding.

Butterflies

Whether you are a lepidopterologist (someone who studies butterflies), a collector of butterflies or just think they’re pretty, this butterfly bouquet by Martha Stewart is an amazingly cute and unique DIY bouquet alternative.

Scrabble

Even a traditional bouquet can easily be geeked up with the addition of a few Scrabble tiles. Just look at how beautiful and delightful Amanda and Nick’s “Love” Scrabble bouquet ended up.

Maps

Etsy seller CraftingbyKnight’s map bouquet is perfect for any cartologists out there, or just for anyone who plans to travel quite a bit after the reception is over. Best of all, since she custom makes the bouquets, you could specifically request map pages that have special meaning to you –for example, the city where you and your partner met, the places you both grew up, where you hope to move, where you are honeymooning, etc.

I’ve always wanted a semi-gothic red wedding dress with a red and black matching bouquet at my own wedding, but after writing this, I think I might want red gerbera daisies (my favorite flowers) with some black bats floating above them like the stars above the Mario Galaxy bouquet. What about you guys, if you could get any geek bouquet or boutonniere for your dream wedding, what would it look like?

The 15 Most Ridiculous College Application Essay Questions

Posted: 17 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT

Peter Jacobs of Business Insider rounded up some of the strangest essay questions that colleges have asked applicants to write about. Here are a couple of oddies from the list:

University of Chicago:
Have you ever walked through the aisles of a warehouse store like Costco or Sam's Club and wondered who would buy a jar of mustard a foot and a half tall? We've bought it, but it didn't stop us from wondering about other things, like absurd eating contests, impulse buys, excess, unimagined uses for mustard, storage, preservatives, notions of bigness…and dozens of other ideas both silly and serious. Write an essay somehow inspired by super-huge mustard.

Tufts University:
Kermit the Frog famously lamented, 'It's not easy being green.' Do you agree?

I don't think that all of the questions are necessarily "ridiculous." Some of them could be excellent prompts for tests of creative thinking and writing. Here are two examples from the same list:

University of Pennsylvania:
You have just finished your three hundred page autobiography. Please submit page 217.

University of Notre Dame:
You have 150 words. Take a risk.

French Winemaker Releases Cola-Flavored Wine

Posted: 17 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT

If you have a refined and discerning palette, then Châteaux de Bourdeaux, a vintner in France, may have the perfect wine for you. It tastes like cola:

In France, sad to say wine drinking has plummeted in recent years, particularly among the young, who are more attracted to beer and spirits. A BBC story by Hugh Schofield from Paris explains: “Recent figures merely confirm what has been observed for years, that the number of regular drinkers of wine in France is in freefall.” He wrote that in 1980, “more than half of adults were consuming wine on a near-daily basis. Today that figure has fallen to 17%. Meanwhile, the proportion of French people who never drink wine at all has doubled to 38%.”

But will a starter wine flavored with cola and playing to a younger generation’s sweet tooth lead to an interest in learning about — and appreciating — their wine heritage?

Rouge Sucette — “Red Lollipop” — is cheaper than wine. A bottle will cost just under $4 in France and will be sold primarily in hypermarchés (huge supermarkets). How many Red Lollipop drinkers will graduate to something more sophisticated is not yet known.

Anatol Knotek's Visual Poetry

Posted: 17 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT

There's art, there's word art, and then there's word art by Anatol Knotek. The Austrian visual artist has created unique handmade visual poetry (or concrete poetry) book called "Anachronism," with clever compositions:

usually a book is just a copy - but not this one. every poem is individually written with my typewriter, so each single page is unique. out of about 50 poems i chose 16 for each book, therefore also the contents varies and is never the same.

And finally, some cleverly fantastic animated GIFs:

Questions In Need of Answers

Posted: 17 Jul 2013 08:09 AM PDT

Today, I woke up with some burning questions that need answers. Rather than Google, I thought: Why not put them to the neatoramanaut community, who've got to be smarter than Google's algorithms, right?

So here goes:

1. The other week, I saw a small plane crash into the 405 Freeway near Long Beach. When I went to take a photo of it, a CHiPs on foot pulled me over and gave me a ticket for using my phone while driving. I said, "Well, I'm using the camera, so it's not a phone at this point. Is there a law against pulling out my DSLR and taking a picture while traffic is basically stopped?" He said no, but there is a law about operating a motor vehicle without a hands-free device. QUESTION: If I dispute this ticket, will I win? Or is just my word against his?

2. When you cut a 12-hour Sudafed in half, do you only get 6 hours of sinus relief, or do you still get the full 12 hours, but only at half the strength? Anyone? Anyone?

3. Anyone own a BMW 3-series wagon? Thinking of buying a used one for my wife. Like a 2006 or 2007. Any advice? Good/bad? Pitfalls? Thanks all!

Even Malware Hates Aquaman

Posted: 17 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT

I have nothing against Aquaman. Really, he has some pretty awesome powers. Even so, he's been the butt of everyone's joke for years now and there doesn't seem to be any sign of that stopping soon.

In fact, McAfee recently ran a search to discover the superhero that links to the most sites filled with malware, and it turns out that Aquaman is the most toxic superhero to search for on your computer. Mr. Fantastic is a close second, followed by The Hulk, Wonder Woman and Daredevil.

Does your favorite superhero rank high in the virus list? Find out at the link.

The Table of Thrones

This table contains spoilers! The HBO series Game of Thrones has so many characters, you need a chart to keep up with them -so Christian Petersen made one, in the form of a periodic table. Characters are divided into clans (by color), and whether they are living or dead (in the fine print). That's the spoilers. And the chart is available to buy at Etsy. Link -via Laughing Squid

Stilettos and Schizophrenia

The following is an article from The Annals of Improbable Research.

A recently published hypothesis proposes that, in country after country, the prevalence of schizophrenia increased following the introduction of heeled footwear. That hypothesis does not account for differing footwear styles. In this report, we attempt to remedy that lack.

We examine the risk of schizophrenia in individuals wearing stiletto heels.

Flensmark’s High Hypothesis

Is there an association between the use of heeled footwear and schizophrenia? This is the question posed in a recent paper by Jarl Flensmark, published in the journal Medical Hypotheses.1 Flensmark’s article highlights that the increase use and availability of heeled footwear has been paralleled by an increase in the prevalence of schizophrenia.

Flensmark presents a cogent argument supported by historical and epidemiological data together with a possible pathophysiological mechanism to account for the phenomenon.

The mechanism underlying this phenomenon, Flensmark suggests, is obvious. Heeled footwear, he explains, reduces stimulation of mechanoreceptors in the lower extremities which would normally increase activity in cerebello-thalamo-cortico-cerebellar loops through their action on NMDA receptors, and that this reduction in cortical activity changes dopaminergic function which involves the basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical-nigro-basal ganglia loops.

If Flensmark is correct, there are far-reaching consequences for the prevention and treatment of mental illnesses. The role of drugs in the management of these disorders is controversial, and the Flensmark hypothesis casts a dark shadow over the future of psychopharmacology.

This argument would have been further strengthened, however, by considering the relationship between the prevalence of schizophrenia and individual footwear styles. We offer some thoughts about the deleterious effects upon mental health of stiletto shoes, and conclude with a simple intervention which, based on Flensmark’s observations, may offer therapeutic benefit to both the mental and physical health of those suffering from schizophrenia.

If this pathophysiological mechanism is correct one would expect to observe a higher prevalence of schizophrenia in individuals who wear stiletto heels as high heels increase mechanical loading on the medial forefoot at the expense of other plantar regions,2 and cause changes in postural muscle tone,3 and therefore altered mechanoreceptor stimulation. We undertook a systematic literature search to identify epidemiological and demographic data regarding the risk of schizophrenia in individuals who wear stiletto heels.

Figure 1. Measuring a stiletto heel (metric). (Image credit: A.S. Kaswell, AIR)

Stilettos and Schizophrenia: Method

We did a systematic walkthrough of the medical literature, looking for reports that involve the two words “stiletto” and “schizophrenia.” We found nothing. We then searched for medical papers that report the average heel size as a function of age. We found some. We then correlated this data with age of hospitalization for schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia and Stilettos: Results

The relationship between hospitalizations for schizophrenia and average heel height is represented graphically in figure 3. [Ed. note: which is unavailable.]

Stiletto heels are rarely worn before the age of fifteen, and schizophrenic illnesses are rarely diagnosed before this age. Heel height increases sharply, however, over the subsequent three years, closely mirroring the sharp increase in the incidence of schizophrenia. The mean age for the first wearing of heels 1, 2 and 3 inches high is 15.1, 16.7 and 18.5 years, respectively.4 The wearing of stiletto heels decreases throughout adulthood as does the heel height. It is of particular interest to note that the maximum heel height corresponds to the peak hospitalization rate, and as heel height decreases so too does hospitalization.

Stilettos and Schizophrenia: Discussion

High heels are worn most frequently, but not exclusively, by females. We are not aware of any data regarding the average height of the heel size of men’s footwear, or how this may change over time. This is clearly an area worthy of further research.

Preliminary data do suggest, however, that male cross-dressers may have a higher rate of schizophrenia,5 although we are careful to emphasize that it is not clear that all male cross-dressers wear stiletto heels, some perhaps preferring a simple flat shoe or an open-toe sandal.

The possible relationship between plantar mechanoreceptor stimulation and schizophrenia raises interesting questions regarding therapeutic intervention. Should Flensmark’s hypothesis be true, increasing plantar mechanoreceptor stimulation should offer protection from developing a psychotic illness to vulnerable individuals (e.g. those with high genetic loading), as well as improving the illness course of those with an established schizophrenic illness.

Steps for Treatment

We propose a simple and highly cost-effective intervention which simply involves repetitive forceful stepping on the spot, twice daily (Step-b.d). This program of activity could be easily incorporated into the daily routine and would obviate the need for regular contact with physicians to monitor compliance or side effects, although we would advocate a six-monthly check-up with a state registered chiropodist.

[We would not wish this to be confused with the highly successful Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder (STEPBD), which is currently running in the USA, and, accordingly, we propose the Schizophrenia Kinetic Intervention for Prophylaxis (SKIP-BD)].

Apart from the potential therapeutic benefit on schizophrenic symptoms, there are also other clear benefits associated with this intervention. Patients with schizophrenia are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis,6 and there is clear data to suggest that jumping up and down on the spot prevents bone loss and osteoporosis.7 Furthermore, the increased aerobic exercise would offer protection against cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes, which are more prevalent in patients with schizophrenia.8

Controlled trials of the SKIP-BD program are urgently needed, as a positive outcome would have dramatic resource implications for all developed healthcare systems, as well as for the pharmaceutical industry. The need for costly Early Intervention in Psychosis programs would be abolished, and the costs associated with antipsychotic drug prescriptions would be decimated. Pending the results of these trials, we strongly recommend that patients continue to take prescribed medication. Patients and doctors, of either sex, should wear the stiletto heel at their peril.

Conflict of Interests

PM and PG have no personal experience of wearing footwear with heel heights exceeding one inch. There are no other conflicts of interest that will be mentioned here.

Just Add Milk: How Cereal Transformed American Culture

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT

More than a century ago, Christian fundamentalists invented cereal to promote a healthy lifestyle free of sin. Little did they know, their creation would eventually be used to promote everything from radio and cartoons to Mr. T and tooth decay.

Meat Is Murder (on the Colon)

During the early 19th century, most Americans subsisted on a diet of pork, whiskey, and coffee. It was hell on the bowels, and to many Christian fundamentalists, hell on the soul, too. They believed that constipation was God's punishment for eating meat. The diet was also blamed for fueling lust and laziness. To rid America of these vices, religious zealots spearheaded the country's first vegetarian movement. In 1863, one member of this group, Dr. James Jackson, invented Granula, America's first ready-to-eat, grain-based breakfast product. Better known as cereal, Jackson's rock-hard breakfast bricks offered consumers a sin-free meat alternative that aimed to clear both conscience and bowels.

While Jackson's innovation didn't appeal to the masses, it did catch the attention of Dr. John Kellogg. A renowned surgeon and health guru, Kellogg had famously transformed the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan into one of America's hottest retreats. Socialites from the Rockefellers to the Roosevelts flocked to "The San" to receive Kellogg's unorthodox treatments. But shock-therapy sessions and machine-powered enemas weren't the only items on the agenda. Kellogg also stressed such newfangled ideas as exercise and proper nutrition. It wasn't long before he started serving bran biscuits similar to those of Dr. Jackson—only now with the Kellogg name on them. To avoid a lawsuit, he changed the name of the cereal by one letter, dubbing it "Granola."

By 1889, The San was selling 2 tons of granola a week, despite the fact that it was barely edible. The success inspired Dr. Kellogg and his brother, W.K., to produce more-palatable fare. After six years of experimentation, a kitchen mishap by W.K. yielded the breakfast staple known as cereal flakes.

Making Red Blood Redder

In many ways, the cereal flake is the perfect consumer product. It's easy to produce, easy to sell, and surprisingly lucrative. To this day, cereal comes with an eye-popping profit margin of 50 percent. These merits became clear to Charles Post, a failed suspender salesman who moved to Battle Creek in 1895. Post began selling knock-off versions of Kellogg's products with a twist of his own—advertising. At the time, advertising was associated with snake-oil salesmen and con artists. But Post, who had a background in sales, didn't mind drizzling a little snake oil on his product. He published pamphlets with titles such as "The Road To Wellville" and claimed his cereal, Grape-Nuts, could cure appendicitis, improve one's IQ, and even "make red blood redder." By 1903, he was clearing $1 million a year.

Across town, Dr. Kellogg refused to sully The San's reputation with heathen advertising, and his profits suffered as a result. W.K., however, had no such qualms and set out to emulate Post. In his first national campaign, he told women to "Wink at your grocer, and see what you get." (Answer: a free box of Kellogg's Corn Flakes.) Within a year, he'd sold 1 million cases of cereal. With the leading cereal makers embracing such unabashed hucksterism, it was clear that cereal's connection to its fundamentalist roots had come to an end.

Thinking Outside the Box

All across America, the eyes of investors lit up with dollar signs, and would-be cereal barons descended on Battle Creek like locusts. By 1911, 107 brands of corn flakes were being made in Battle Creek alone.

But the cereal business had one major drawback—there was little substantive difference between brands. To stand out from the crowd, manufacturers realized that they had to focus more on the outside of the box than on what was inside. Some tried decorating their products with adjectives, creating names like University Brand Daintily Crisped Flaked Corn. Others competed to appear the healthiest. Tryabita, for example, was infused with celery flavor because, well, it sounded healthy.

But the real winner was a cereal called Force. Its mascot, Sunny Jim, was a strutting, top-hatted gentleman who became so popular in newspapers and magazines that other cereal makers rushed to create their own mascots. For a cereal called Elijah's Manna, Charles Post even tried putting a picture of the prophet on the label. Although the product was eventually pulled, one industry ground rule had been established: Every box needs a character.

Before long, cereal makers had an insatiable appetite for finding the right mascot, regardless of the cost. During the Depression, Post Toasties decided to use cartoon animals on its boxes and paid its cartoonist $1.5 million in the first year. That artist was Walt Disney, and he used the earnings to build the Disney empire.

The Children Are the Future

Cereal's total reliance on advertising meant that it was essential for companies to keep up with new forms of media. Quaker Oats, for example, hitched its sales to the rise of radio in the 1920s by giving away more than 1 million radios as part of a promotion. Cereal companies were also quick to buy up radio stations and produce radio shows. For the most part, they churned out dramas and gossip shows aimed at housewives. But a radical shift in demographics came in 1936, thanks to a boy named Skippy.

A Dennis the Menace type who frequently interrupted his adventures to extol the virtues of Wheaties, Skippy was the first cereal character directly marketed to children. As it turned out, kids ate him up, and cereal producers learned an important lesson: Children are suckers. The flood of kid-friendly, cereal-shilling characters that followed reads like a Who's Who of American iconography, including the Lone Ranger, Dick Tracy, and Buck Rogers. By the 1960s, cereal advertisers were devoting 90 percent of their budgets to reaching children.

In the process of targeting the young, cereal companies also realized that kids don't care about their colons. They want sugar. Lots of sugar. In 1939, a Philadelphia heater salesman named Jim Rex created the first sugared cereal, called Ranger Joe Popped Wheat Honnies. Ironically, he designed the cereal to minimize the amount of sugar children consumed. He reasoned that if he lightly presweetened his product, kids wouldn't add more sugar on top. He was wrong, and his good intentions were lost on bigger companies. After Ranger Joe sales skyrocketed, manufacturers started producing cereals such as Sugar Smacks, which contained a shocking 56 percent sugar.

How did cereal companies reconcile this with their original commitment to the health movement? Taking a page out of Post's playbook, they declared that sugar wasn't bad for you because it gave you the fuel you needed to start your day. With trusted radio personalities extolling the "energy-giving" virtues of cereal, impressionable kids and their frazzled parents rushed to stores.

TV Nation

Television took advertising for sugar cereals to a new level, and the master of the new medium was an ad man named Leo Burnett. He invented TV programs specifically designed to entertain children and sell Kellogg's products. Much like Skippy a decade before, Burnett's characters would turn to the screen in the middle of a show and pitch the merits of a particular brand. There was nothing subtle about it. Howdy Doody, Roy Rogers, Andy Griffith, Rin Tin Tin, the Beverly Hillbillies, Yogi Bear, and Fred Flintstone all became television icons because they were good at selling cereal.

(YouTube link

Also at Burnett's urging, cereal companies invested heavily in early television technology. (They still do; cereal is the second-largest advertiser on television today, behind automobiles.) The financial backing let them shape the medium to suit their needs—namely, adding color. Burnett was one of the earliest believers in motivational psychology and understood that colors appealed to kids and moms subliminally. When color TV became a reality, he persuaded Kellogg to use anthropomorphized cartoon animals as mascots. He thought animation would make for better, more colorful commercials. The first mascot they produced was Tony the Tiger, whose meteoric success was followed by hundreds of other cartoon icons.

Burnett's advertising style was so effective that cereal sales continued to rise every year, unlike most products at the grocery store. After a while, parents and child psychologists became concerned that the ads were a little too effective. In the late 1960s, consumer advocates claimed that using cartoon characters to target children was overly manipulative, if not unethical. Eventually, in 1990, they forced Congress to pass a law banning TV characters from pitching directly to children in the middle of a show. Protective measures aside, cereal had strayed far from its wholesome origins. While Dr. Jackson's dream of displacing pork chops from the breakfast table had become a reality, his cereal wasn't what it used to be. Bitten by the fangs of consumerism, Granula had transformed into Count Chocula in the course of a century.

Self-Absorbed Product Placement

Posted: 19 Jul 2013 04:00 AM PDT

Reflecting on the development of the selfie photographic genre, Mike Mellia concludes that some people are a little too into themselves. His project entitled "Self-Absorbed" works with this theme by placing his own image into branded advertisements:

Each image in the collection Self-Absorbed contains a portrait of the author blended into the logo of a famous consumer good. When choosing what products to use in the experiment, Mellia looked for American advertising that was universally known but considered rather cliché at this point. He used mascots like the Marlboro Man to emphasize the intent behind the way brands are sold and how that relates to our own typical self-branding through social media.

"In a consumer-driven society of product-placement and constant contact through technology," Mellia says, "the self-absorbed Facebook generation and advertisers make the exact same self-branding decisions."

Pitch Drop Experiment Drops!

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 09:00 PM PDT

The longest-running scientific experiment in the world is a pitch drop experiment that began in Queensland, Australia, in 1927 (described in this post). The setup is basically putting pitch in a funnel and see if it drips out. The point is to prove that pitch is a viscous liquid that will flow, instead of a solid. The problem is that it takes years for a drop to actually drop, and has never been witnessed. A similar experiment was begun in 1944 at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Now, for the first time, a drop has been recorded!

Over several decades a number of drips did form in the funnel and fall into the jar, giving credence to the hypothesis that pitch is indeed viscous.

However, the dripping was never witnessed or captured on camera, which would have definitively proved the theory.

A number of weeks ago, scientists in the department noticed that a drip had formed.

In order to finally and definitively end the experiment, they set up a webcam to video the experiment around the clock.

Last Thursday, the drip finally dropped into the jar, and was captured on camera.

The Australian pitch drop has dripped eight times, but has never been recorded on video. See the Trinity College video yourself at RTE News. Link -via Boing Boing

The Godzilla Experience at Comic Con

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 05:00 PM PDT

Barnaby Legg of Legendary Pictures is promoting the 2014 Godzilla movie with a pop-up exhibition in San Diego to coincide with Comic Con.

Rather than create a staid museum of Godzilla artifacts, Legg and his team spent three months planning, designing, and building an immersive, multi-stage presentation that, in Legg’s words, “physicalizes the impact Godzilla has had on popular culture.” The experience will open to the public starting on Thursday; fans can download a free iTunes and Android app, via a special “Godzilla Encounter” website, that will help guide fans on a merry scavenger hunt leading them to the building pictured below:

Seeing the building is just the very first part of the "experience," which includes, yes, a museum, but also an encounter with Godzilla. Read all about it at Buzzfeed. Link

The Case of the Farting Ghosts

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 02:00 PM PDT

I'm not a cloud, I'm a fartWhen bad smells from flatulent demons were ruining his business, who Romanian lawyer Madalin Ciculescu gonna call? The ghostbusters - his local Orthodox bishop and priests - to do an exorcism, of course!

And when THAT inconceivably failed, Ciculescu decided to bring the matter to a higher authority:

A Romanian lawyer is suing his local Orthodox bishop and four priests claiming they failed to properly exorcise flatulent demons that were forcing him out of his home.  [...] The case alleging 'religious malpractice' is reportedly the first time there has been such an allegation made in a Romanian court.

He told the court: 'If they (the accused) represent the way of God then God's ways are crooked. They did not remove the demons that made these bad smells as they promised to do, and I still see all sorts of demons in the form of animals, usually crows but also other such things, that are making my life miserable.

'When I am at home they switch the TV on and off all the time, they make foul smells that give me headaches and basically roam unhindered around my house and my business.'

The man produced his mother to back up his claim saying that even the hair-dryer was possessed and a black shadow came out of it when anyone tried to use it - and she also said the fridge was infested by the flatulent demons that she confirmed left foul smells about the property.

Where is Matt Damon?

When you tell a story on Twitter, you can only give a line or so at a time. But that just makes it more like listening to a friend tell a story in real time, especially when other listeners jump in with their own comments. And so goes the story Erin Faulk told on Twitter. See, she was in Morocco and bored, and heard Matt Damon was in the country filming a movie. So she convinced her four classmates to go on a quest to find him. Once you get started, you won't be able to "put it down," as if this were a book. But it's a entire story told in Tweets, archived at Storify. Link -via Metafilter

Firefighter Resuscitates Kitten

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 09:00 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Firefighter Cory Kalanick always has his helmet cam on during fire calls, and so do many of his colleagues. In the case of a house fire in Fresno a few weeks ago, the video recorded the rescue of a kitten overcome by smoke.

“I looked down and you can actually see the cat shining in the spotlight of my flashlight.  And I looked back and that's when I saw the cat and grabbed him,” said Cory Kalanick, the firefighter who found the kitten.

The kitten was limp as Kalanick picked it up and took it outside.  He grabbed a mask and an oxygen tank, setting the kitten on his glove to protect it from the hot asphalt.  After pouring water on him and using an entire tank of oxygen, within 15 minutes, Kalanick massaged life back into the tiny animal.  He affectionally nicknamed "Lucky the Cat."

Kalanick edited the video to resemble a movie trailer. You can see more of the raw video with the news story. Link  -via PetaPixel

'Tis Thursday, so you know what it means, Neatoramanauts: it's time for the What Is It? Game, brought to you by the always amusing What Is It? Blog.

What is this thing in the picture? Your guess can win you a free T-shirt of your choice from the NeatoShop. Here's how to play:

Place your guess in the comment section below. One guess per comment, but you can enter as many guesses as you'd like in separate comments. Post no URLs or weblinks.

Let's change it up a bit: we'll pick two winners who submit funny (albeit ultimately incorrect) guesses. If you guessed right, then good for ya - but you don't win anything, mmkay?

So, it's up to you, funny people: you have twice the chance of winning that T-shirt now.

Please write your T-shirt selection alongside your guess. If you don't include a selection, you forfeit the prize. We highly suggest you take a look at the NeatoShop's new selection of Funny T-shirts and Science T-Shirts.

Ready? Go for it! The What Is It? Blog has more pictures, and other mystery items. Good luck!

"She Loves You" by The Beatles

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Neatorama presents a guest post from actor, comedian, and voiceover artist Eddie Deezen. Visit Eddie at his website.

"She loves you yeah yeah yeah!!"

This is where Beatlemania begins. To countless millions around the world, this was also the beginning of the '60s.

Along with the then-shocking Beatle haircuts, this incredible song is the symbol, the signature tune of the early Beatles -the four happy, cheerful, chipper, and harmless mop tops. This is the Beatles before drugs, before Yoko Ono, before the facial hair, before the Maharishi, before the in-house fighting and bickering, before John said they were "more popular than Jesus." The song seems to encapsulate the image of the early Beatles, an image still held indelibly in the minds of millions of fans the world over.

"She Loves You" was written by John and Paul in very unremarkable circumstances. The two brilliant co-writers sat down in a hotel room on June 26, 1963, and dutifully knocked it out. They finished it up at McCartney's childhood home a few days later. This, by the way, was the first Beatles record of any kind with the publishing credit rendered as "Lennon-McCartney" rather than the other way around.

All songs written by John and Paul, even if one had written 90% or even the entire song themselves, were credited to John and Paul jointly. "She Loves You" seems to have been a genuine 50-50 collaborative effort.

At the time they composed it, the boys were on a bus tour, as a backup act for a teenage girl named Helen Shapiro. The song itself is unusual for a love song, in that it is a guy talking to another guy about a girl who loves the second guy.

John and Paul's original idea was an answer, back and forth, type song. According to Paul, the original plan was "a couple of us would sing 'she loves you' choruses and the others would do the 'yeah yeah yeah' ones. Then John and I agreed it was a pretty crummy idea… but at least we had the basic idea of writing the song." The answer Q&A was ditched, and instead, the "yeah yeah yeah" was tacked onto the opening line, a chorus in the middle, and the finish. The gimmick worked and the "yeah yeah yeah" became an early Beatles catchphrase. (Paul's father, a very proper Englishman, actually chided Paul for not using the more proper "yes yes yes" as the chorus.)

Another gimmick of John and Paul's was the constant use of pronouns in their early song titles. "She Loves You" followed "Love Me Do," "Please Please Me," and "From Me to You" in the Beatles canon. Another pronoun title, "I Want to Hold Your Hand," had actually preceded "She Loves You" to the top of the charts in America, and these two would be back-to-back number one hits for the Fab Four in early 1964. This rare event had only previously been accomplished by Elvis Presley in 1956.

Interestingly, "She Loves You" was released a few times in America on minor labels in 1963 and it flopped. There is an obscure reference to the song on page 32 of Billboard magazine in the September 21, 1963 issue. "She Loves You," issued on Swan records, is given a mention in the "four-star singles" section. Murray the K, the famous U.S. disc jockey, played the record in 1963 on his New York radio show and it placed third of five new singles issued that week. For whatever reason, although the Beatles were already a smash act in England, the record buyers of America answered the early Beatles records with a yawn of disinterest.

Americans at large got their first earful of "She Loves You" (and eyeful of the Beatles themselves) on a film clip of the Fab Four on The Jack Paar Show on January 3, 1964, one month before the Beatles arrived in the U.S. for the first time. Paar showed the brief clip and made a few withering, sarcastic remarks as the studio audience giggled at these strange-looking long-haired youths in their matching collarless jackets.

(YouTube link)

Today, we all live in such an "I've seen everything" society, we seem beyond shock (and I think we practically are). One has to put his or her mind into a 1964 mind-set to imagine how staggeringly shocking the Beatles and their haircuts were in the early days of 1964. The image the Beatles presented to Middle America in those gentler, milder (saner?) days would perhaps compare with us witnessing a flying saucer from another planet landing in the middle of New York City or maybe turning on the TV and seeing a group of female singers who performed topless.

In America, "She Loves You" entered the charts at #69 in January 25, 1964, and finally hit the #1 spot on March 21st.

In Britain, "She Loves You" was a staggering sales phenomenon. After spending several weeks at the top of the charts in the summer of 1963, it simply wouldn't go away. It hovered around the top spot and incredibly, rose to #1 again in November of '63, three months after its release. It remains the top-selling British Beatles single to this day.

British singer Kenny Lynch was a performer with the Beatles on their bus tour of 1963 and has clear memories of John and Paul. According to Lynch, "I remember John and Paul saying they were thinking of running up to the microphone and shaking their heads and saying 'Whoooo.'" Lynch warned them against this radical idea: "You can't do that. They'll think you're a bunch of poofs."

But the boys did incorporate their hair-shaking shtick into their live performances of "She Loves You," albeit with George and Paul, not John and Paul. As if Beatlemaniacs weren't excited enough, the bit by George and Paul always drove the girls into a complete frenzy.

"She Loves You" is an exhilarating, breezy electronic song that, to use the stale cliche, sounds as fresh today as the day it was written. One can easily view it at YouTube or on various Beatles websites. The number was also performed by the Beatles in their first film A Hard Day's Night, which is highly recommend viewing, whether you've never seen it or have watched it about 100 times (like me! A Hard Day's Night is, far and away, my all-time favorite movie!).
