Posted: 13 Jul 2013 11:00 PM PDT What do you think is going on here? The most logical explanation is that a time traveler has created a paradox by returning to our present from five different points in time. I would guess that five versions of the person are inside the house watching Back to the Future. Redditor jraevis posted this picture of the shenanigans in his neighborhood. If you go see the full-size picture, you'll see the sign says "DeLorean Parking Only." Link

Decapitated Worms Regrow Heads with Memories Still Inside Posted: 13 Jul 2013 06:00 PM PDT Think that memories are in the brain? New research says that may not be exactly true -at least for flatworms. The planarian is fascinating in that it has the ability to regrow body parts when you cut it into pieces -it will even grow a new head if you cut it off! If that's not freakish enough, experiments show that a newly-regrown head can have some knowledge the earlier head learned. Experiments had been don on planarian heads decades ago, with inconsistent results. Tal Shomrat and Michael Levin at Tufts University returned to this idea with state-of-the-art planarian training methods and computerized testing methods. They trained the worms to overcome their distaste of light and rough surfaces to reach food. After two weeks, the trained planarians went straight to the food, unlike a control group of untrained worms.

Libraries Used to Look Like This Posted: 13 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT In 1874, Cincinnati, Ohio built a huge main library. This architectural marvel remained in use until 1955. Posted: 13 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT Gertie Cleary of Elmsdale, Nova Scotia, saw a raven perched on her fence with porcupine quills stuck in its face. The overly-friendly juvenile raven had a run-in with a porcupine, then made a better choice to let the woman get close. Cleary, wisely wearing gloves, did what she had to do.
She let the raven, named Wilfred by the Cleary family, outside the next day, and he hung around for a while before flying off. Let's just hope the bird learned his lesson about porcupines. Link -via Arbroath

The 5 Most Badass Ways People Escaped from Slavery Posted: 13 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT During the days of slavery in America, there were plenty of people willing to risk their lives for freedom. Many did escape, many were caught, and many died, but there are a few stories of schemes that were so unbelievable that they not only worked, but went down in history. I particularly liked the story of Lewis Williams, who was arrested in Cincinnati for escaping from Kentucky. Williams was taken before a judge for an extradition hearing.
But that's not the end of the story, because he later had to escape from a safe house with another audacious scheme. Read his story and those of four others at Cracked. Link
How to Make <i>Star Trek</i>'s Rokeg Blood Pie Posted: 13 Jul 2013 11:00 AM PDT Food Replicator is a blog devoted to replicating foods that appear on Star Trek. Posted: 13 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT Jon Negroni has a theory about Pixar films. They are all part of the same universe, connected to each other. This goes way beyond seeing a character from one movie in the background of another (often as a toy). This is a unified theory he explains in a timeline. The first Pixar event in the timeline is the movie Brave, which explains the origin of animals and inanimate objects that talk. He explains that and then goes on.
The way he connects each Pixar film, from Cars to Up! to Monsters, Inc. will blow your mind …but not as much as how the end connects to the beginning. Read the whole theory at Negroni's blog. Link -via Geekosystem

Posted: 13 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT You know, we don't say this often enough, but I feel so grateful to have the community of readers that we do here at Neatorama. I surf a lot of sites, looking for the best of the web to post here. I see comment sections of all kinds -some that are empty, others that are full of trolls, illiterates, and political nut cases. I see communities that appear to be all children, or all people who just want to fight. Then I come back here to Neatoramanauts who I feel like I know, who have varying intelligent opinions expressed in a matter-of-fact, non-threatening way, or puns, or encouragement, or personal stories, or extra information on a post. That makes me feel good. Thank you all for being a part of Neatorama! Here's a look at the things that happened this past week. This week's What Is It? game featured a gadget that turned out to be an old-fashioned crimper for can lids. After many serious and no-so-serious guesses, ladybugs finally had the correct answer. The funniest answer was from Randall, who said,
That's good for a t-shirt, too! See the answers to all the mystery items of the week at the What Is It? blog. Send a picture of your pet to tips@neatorama.com to get them on as a featured pet, too! All in all, The Forbidden Island was the standout post of the week. Thanks to everyone who passed the link around! Have you been to Neatorama's Pinterest boards lately? I Was Killed By A Shark In <i>Sharknado</i> Posted: 14 Jul 2013 07:00 PM PDT Ryan Budds is a comedian who recently moved to California. Budds looked up what Asylum does, so he knew what to expect, but he didn't expect that they would give him a real job.
And that's how Budds came to be both infront of the camera and behind the scenes of the SyFy original movie Sharknado. He played the guy on the beach with his leg chomped off early in the film. Read his account of the filming at Warming Glow. Link

The Major Key to Your Better Future is You
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Successful people also feel fear, yet they don’t let it discourage them from moving forward. They realize that fear is a feeling telling them they are about to do something new, something that they are not especially good at yet. For this reason they know they should pay extra attention to how it should be done, research the process, and plan out the steps they will take to accomplish it. And as they go through the process, they can see what worked and what didn’t. To be successful you must be willing to be afraid because fear accompanies risk. Without taking risks you will not achieve your dreams. But also realize that so many of your fears are self-created. You imagine a horrible outcome to your new experience and that image is the fear that holds you back. Realize that all new experiences will be slightly scary, but also acknowledge that what it is you are afraid of is a self-created image of what is going to happen. Acknowledge that you are imagining the worst and that you really have no idea what will happen. You have a choice in what you let your mind dwell on. If you’re going to let yourself visualize the worst, then make sure you let yourself visualize the desired outcome, too! If a fear is too great for you to overcome, try breaking it down into smaller challenges. Try starting out doing the parts of the project that don’t scare you so much. You need to give a speech in front of a large group? Try giving your speech in front of a small group of people who care for you. Work your way up until you are able to feel the fear but still move forward. As you do you will build your confidence and eventually you won’t feel fear surrounding those issues because you’ll have done them enough to count it as a skill. As you move toward your goal, don’t attach yourself so much to the outcomes. Keep moving toward your dream doing everything you can to create what you want, then let it go and see what shows up. Sometimes the universe will have a better idea in mind for you and present a better opportunity when you were expecting something completely different. Don’t let fear keep you from moving forward. Even if the horrible outcome that you imagined happens, the universe will always provide for you another way to succeed. So be on the look-out. Acknowledge your fear. Treat it like a child, hold its hand and take it with you. Trust that no matter what occurs, you are smart enough and strong enough to keep looking for opportunities. If you are willing to try new experiences in spite of your fears, then more new experiences will present themselves for you to try. And the more you try, the more you are likely to succeed!

The Scrappy History of Paper Dolls Posted: 15 Jul 2013 08:00 PM PDT Paper dolls date from the 18th century, beginning as political satire and swiftly earning their fashion paper clothing. Paper dolls changed over time to reflect the world as it was. Old paper dolls may not come with provenance telling who owned them, but you can often tell the era by the clothing they wore. Read about paper dolls through history at Collectors Weekly. Link (Image credit: Linda Ocasio)

The Mystery of the Rare Male Sea Monkey Posted: 15 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT Despite what you were shown on the box, sea monkeys, or brine shrimp, are female. They reproduce asexually for the most part, and their offspring are also female. They are not the only species to reproduce asexually (about one in 10,000 animal species is male-free), but brine shrimp are unique: among the vast swarms of females, you'll find a rare male.

TV's Father: Philo T. Farnsworth Posted: 15 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT The following article is from the bookUncle John's Bathroom Reader Tunes Into TV. On a spring day in 1920 in Rigby, Idaho, a farm boy named Philo took a break from his plowing and invented television. Then his amazing invention was stolen from him. PLOWING AHEAD A man watching mechanical TV. At right, a 1928 image of Felix the Cat broadcast mechanically. Philo knew there had to be a better approach, one that wouldn't require wheels or mass synchronization. That's when, according to legend, he stopped plowing and looked around -his plow had created equally spaced parallel lines all over the entire field. He'd read that scientists could manipulate the motion of an electron thousands of time per second in a vacuum tube, so he looked at the field and saw a large vacuum tube acting as a screen. And "plowing" that field was a thin ray of light, pulled by alternating magnetic fields, moving across the screen in superfast "furrows" while lighting up selected pieces along each furrow. Phil realized that if this were done in a fraction of a second and repeated, the human eye would perceive motion. Recreation of Farnsworth's original sketch for his science teacher. The court ruled for Farnsworth. He now had six clear patents and licensing rights to collect payment from any company -including RCA- that wanted to make television equipment based on them. Sarnoff at the World's Fair. The press took him at his word and trumpeted RCA's "breakthrough" across the land. It was the first step in a long campaign to erase Farnsworth's name from the history of television, successfully replacing it with the names of Sarnoff and Zworykin. It worked so well that even now, with the record finally set straight and even a postage stamp honoring Farnsworth, some sources still mistakenly list Zworykin as the "inventor of television." ___________________ The article above was reprinted with permission from Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader Tunes Into TV. Posted: 17 Jul 2013 04:00 AM PDT Photo: @lizkaster - via KFnet in T-Town Crossing the street can be quite dangerous, so when the city of Tacoma, Washington, didn't do anything to make it safer for pedestrians, vigilantes took matters into their own hands and painted rogue crosswalks and a bike lane. According to Lewis Kamb of The Nws Tribune:
Well, the accusation that the City wasn't doing anything is not technically correct: they sprang into action ... and erased the rogue crosswalks (which cost the city thousands of dollars in public works). They've also threatened to pursue legal action against this form of "vandalism." Word on the street is that they're analyzing paint chips and such. But according to RR Anderson of The Tacomic, the vigilante crosswalk bandit, whoever he is, is not going to let the city walk all over him:
The Supermassive Vacuum Cleaner At the Edge of the Known Universe Posted: 17 Jul 2013 03:00 AM PDT All we know about the universe is in what is called "the observable universe," because there's much beyond what even the most powerful modern telescopes and data-retrieval systems can detect. The Death of Chang and Eng, Conjoined Twins Until the Last Posted: 17 Jul 2013 01:00 AM PDT We all know the basics of the story of Chang and Eng Bunker, the "Siamese Twins" who toured with freak shows in the 1800s, then settled down as farmers and family men until their deaths. But the details of their last years may be a story you've never heard. Financial setbacks during the Civil War and the deaths of two of their children exacerbated Chang's alcoholism. The pair went back out on tour to raise funds, and to seek medical help.
But that wasn't the end of the story. Find out what happened to the twins' bodies, and more, at Atlas Obscura. Link

A Journey Into Our Food System's Refrigerated-Warehouse Archipelago Posted: 16 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT The vast majority of the food in your home depends upon a complicated, energy-dependent infrastructure called "the cold chain." Frozen, fresh, refrigerated, or preserved, at some point, getting that food from the point of origin to your table requires cold storage or transport. This is a system that people rarely see, and are barely aware of. An exhibit by Nicola Twilley on this invisible infrastructure called "Perishable: An Exploration of the Refrigerated Landscape of America" gives us a glimpse of the refrigerated landscape of the food-processing world. The Incredible Victorian-style Fashions of Africa’s Herero People Posted: 16 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT The Germans moved into the area of what is now Namibia in southwest Africa in 1882, eventually occupying and displacing the Herero people and the Namaqua people, taking their land and their cattle, too. The original residents, whose ancestor had lived there for thousands of years, naturally rebelled.
Germany ruled the area until 1915, after which the surviving Herero women adopted the turn-of-the-century clothing style of the Germans, wearing the long dresses even today. It's a reminder of their former occupation, and a celebration of regaining their land. See more pictures at Death and Taxes. Link

Whodunit: The Unsafe Safe House Posted: 16 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT The following is a Whodunit by Hy Conrad featuring Sherman Oliver Holmes, a mysterious crime solver and great-great-grandson of Sherlock Holmes. Can you solve the crime? For all the help Sherman Holmes provided the police, he received little if any recognition. In fact, the officers he helped the most were often the first to make fun of his quirky personality. "They don't want people thinking some amateur is solving their eases," Sherman would say with a generous shrug. "I just wish I didn't have to sneak around eavesdropping all the time." One of Sherman's most extreme eavesdropping cases involved hiding behind a coatrack for over an hour. On that day, his instincts for crime led him beyond a yellow-tape barricade and into the front hall of a police safe house, a normal looking home in a modest, pleasant-looking row house in which a mob witness had just been murdered. From behind the safety of the coats, Sherman watched as a nervous rookie stood over the body of the strangled man. A minute later, Captain Loeb strode in, his baggy suit flapping in the breeze. "I was here protecting the witness," stammered the rookie. "Then I got a call from your office, ordering me back to the station. I left him alone. By the time I figured out the call was a fake and rushed back here, Frankie was dead." The captain remained calm. "Who all has keys to the front door?" "Just me," answered the rookie. "The door locked automatically behind me. I told Frankie not to open up to anyone." Captain Loeb examined the body. "Strangled from behind, meaning he probably trusted his assailant. Who would Frankie open the door for? Let's get them in here." The first suspect to be brought in was Lou, the victim's brother-in-law. "Frankie sneaked a telephone call to me last night at work," Lou said, staring down at the corpse. "I'm a phone company operator. Frankie didn't tell me where he was. My wife is going to go nuts when she hears." The second suspect was Barry Aiello, the secret mob informant who had talked Frankie into testifying. "I feel like I'm responsible," he sighed. "The mob was using all their contacts to find him." Barry bent down and examined the welts around the victim's neck. "Looks like a belt was used. Poor Frankie shouldn't have turned his back." Captain Loeb had them both taken in for questioning, then crossed to the rack and grabbed his trench coat. "The commissioner's gonna have my head, but I suppose I gotta call him." Loeb had just pulled a notepad from his coat pocket when he saw a face staring out from behind Frankie's leather jacket. "Who in blazes are you?" "Hi!" Sherman was so nervous, he momentarily forgot his English accent. "I'm so sorry. I know I'm trespassing, but..." He could think of only one way to redeem himself, and that was to hand them Frankie's killer. WHO KILLED FRANKIE? WHAT TIPPED SHERMAN OFF? The whodunit above was provided by American mystery fiction author Hy Conrad. In addition to his work in mystery and crime puzzles, Hy was also one of the original writers for the groundbreaking TV series Monk. Currently, Hy is working on mystery novel series "Abel Adventures" as well as the Monk series of novels, starting with Mr. Monk Helps Himself (published by Penguin, order from Amazon here) Check out Hy's official website and Facebook page - and stay tuned for more whodunits puzzlers on Neatorama from the master of whodunit mysteries himself!

10 Lifehacks from 100 Years Ago Posted: 16 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT From the 1880s to the 1940s, manufacturers put stiffening cards into cigarette packs, sometimes decorated with advertising, art, or trivia. 14 Great Geek Bouquets And Boutonnieres Posted: 16 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT We cover a lot of geeky wedding stuff on Neatorama, but if you just can’t get enough nerdy wedding pictures (whether or not you’re in the midst of planning a wedding), here are some fantastic bouquets and boutonnieres perfect for any geeks ready to join together in matrimony. Angry BirdsEtsy seller RBKCreations makes all kinds of awesome custom wedding bouquets and boutonnieres. This Angry Birds bouquet would be perfect for throwing to a crowd, but it would be even better if the bride used a slingshot for the bouquet toss. MuppetsIf you really want to do something creative with your bouquets, RBKCreations will even custom make a themed wedding bouquet just for you. Here is a sample from one custom order she made, with a Muppets theme. Personally though, if I were the bride, I’d be bummed I didn’t get any characters on my bouquet. MarioRBKCreations also makes these adorable Mario-inspired wedding bouquets with felt fire flowers and button-adorned mushrooms. She even makes matching bridesmaids bouquets and fire flower boutonnieres for the groom and his groomsmen. Super Mario GalaxyIf you’re going to be married inside of a hobby and gaming store with a TARDIS as your altar, you’d better have a few other great geeky touches to your wedding as well. Fortunately, Laura and Calvin lived up to their self-proclaimed nerdom, incorporating lines from The Princess Bride into their vows, serving up Mario cupcakes for dessert and using a bouquet inspired by Super Mario Galaxy, complete with hovering stars and mushrooms. Fire Flowers and MinifigsSarah and Chris geeked out their wedding with homemade fire flower bouquets and boutonnieres built with custom-made Lego Minifigs –Chris’ appears to be a tiny little He-Man. The groomsmen then completed their geektastic look with some sweet 8-bit ties. Princess PeachWhat character would better suit a gamer wedding with bright pink bouquets than Princess Peach? As if her tiny figure popping out of the bride’s flowers weren’t cute enough, the boutonnieres also featured a Mario character –little toad hiding behind a flower. Anna and Jonny’s wedding featured a variety of other adorable gaming touches as well, including guest gift boxes that look like puzzle boxes and centerpieces coming out of old NES cartridges. My Bouquet LollipopLove candy almost as much as you love your sweetheart? Then this lollipop wedding bouquet would be perfect for ceremony, just as it was perfect for Melanie and Justin. Now That’s SweetIf you have such a sweet tooth that only three swirly lollipops in a bouquet seems like too few, then you’d certainly enjoy Julia’s bouquet that features nothing but lollipops and giant jawbreakers. The entire thing is so adorable that it’s easy to imagine Vanellope Von Schweetz of Wreck It Ralph carrying at her wedding –but let’s just hope she didn’t toss this heavy bouquet at a flock of single girls. Maximum Geekdom GoFlickr user ElsaWolf’s bouquet incorporates three distinct areas of geek culture –Doctor Who fandom, steampunk and a love of literature, specifically Sherlock Holmes. The bottom of the bouquet features a sonic screwdriver wrapped in copper wire to add a touch of steampunk flair and the flowers are made from pages torn from Sherlock Holmes stories. Want to make your own paper roses out of a book that has particular meaning to you or your partner? Well, 100 Layer Cake has a fantastic how to guide to putting together your own bookish bouquet. Avengers AssembleThis Avengers boutonniere is perfect for any grooms who happen to love comics. Best of all, each groomsman gets to choose the Avenger he likes the most –and while Offbeat Bride writer Jamie’s husband chose The Avengers, you could easily take inspiration from this and select your own favorite super hero team. Nightwing and BatgirlLaura and Seth wanted to save money on their wedding, so they opted to make the bouquet and boutonnieres themselves. As it turns out, this probably worked out for the best because the resulting bouquet and boutonnieres, made from the pages of comic books, perfectly suited their Nightwing and Batgirl themed wedding. ButterfliesWhether you are a lepidopterologist (someone who studies butterflies), a collector of butterflies or just think they’re pretty, this butterfly bouquet by Martha Stewart is an amazingly cute and unique DIY bouquet alternative. ScrabbleEven a traditional bouquet can easily be geeked up with the addition of a few Scrabble tiles. Just look at how beautiful and delightful Amanda and Nick’s “Love” Scrabble bouquet ended up. MapsEtsy seller CraftingbyKnight’s map bouquet is perfect for any cartologists out there, or just for anyone who plans to travel quite a bit after the reception is over. Best of all, since she custom makes the bouquets, you could specifically request map pages that have special meaning to you –for example, the city where you and your partner met, the places you both grew up, where you hope to move, where you are honeymooning, etc. I’ve always wanted a semi-gothic red wedding dress with a red and black matching bouquet at my own wedding, but after writing this, I think I might want red gerbera daisies (my favorite flowers) with some black bats floating above them like the stars above the Mario Galaxy bouquet. What about you guys, if you could get any geek bouquet or boutonniere for your dream wedding, what would it look like? |

Posted: 17 Jul 2013 08:09 AM PDT Today, I woke up with some burning questions that need answers. Rather than Google, I thought: Why not put them to the neatoramanaut community, who've got to be smarter than Google's algorithms, right? So here goes: 1. The other week, I saw a small plane crash into the 405 Freeway near Long Beach. When I went to take a photo of it, a CHiPs on foot pulled me over and gave me a ticket for using my phone while driving. I said, "Well, I'm using the camera, so it's not a phone at this point. Is there a law against pulling out my DSLR and taking a picture while traffic is basically stopped?" He said no, but there is a law about operating a motor vehicle without a hands-free device. QUESTION: If I dispute this ticket, will I win? Or is just my word against his? 2. When you cut a 12-hour Sudafed in half, do you only get 6 hours of sinus relief, or do you still get the full 12 hours, but only at half the strength? Anyone? Anyone? 3. Anyone own a BMW 3-series wagon? Thinking of buying a used one for my wife. Like a 2006 or 2007. Any advice? Good/bad? Pitfalls? Thanks all!

Just Add Milk: How Cereal Transformed American Culture Posted: 19 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT More than a century ago, Christian fundamentalists invented cereal to promote a healthy lifestyle free of sin. Little did they know, their creation would eventually be used to promote everything from radio and cartoons to Mr. T and tooth decay. Meat Is Murder (on the Colon)During the early 19th century, most Americans subsisted on a diet of pork, whiskey, and coffee. It was hell on the bowels, and to many Christian fundamentalists, hell on the soul, too. They believed that constipation was God's punishment for eating meat. The diet was also blamed for fueling lust and laziness. To rid America of these vices, religious zealots spearheaded the country's first vegetarian movement. In 1863, one member of this group, Dr. James Jackson, invented Granula, America's first ready-to-eat, grain-based breakfast product. Better known as cereal, Jackson's rock-hard breakfast bricks offered consumers a sin-free meat alternative that aimed to clear both conscience and bowels. While Jackson's innovation didn't appeal to the masses, it did catch the attention of Dr. John Kellogg. A renowned surgeon and health guru, Kellogg had famously transformed the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan into one of America's hottest retreats. Socialites from the Rockefellers to the Roosevelts flocked to "The San" to receive Kellogg's unorthodox treatments. But shock-therapy sessions and machine-powered enemas weren't the only items on the agenda. Kellogg also stressed such newfangled ideas as exercise and proper nutrition. It wasn't long before he started serving bran biscuits similar to those of Dr. Jackson—only now with the Kellogg name on them. To avoid a lawsuit, he changed the name of the cereal by one letter, dubbing it "Granola." By 1889, The San was selling 2 tons of granola a week, despite the fact that it was barely edible. The success inspired Dr. Kellogg and his brother, W.K., to produce more-palatable fare. After six years of experimentation, a kitchen mishap by W.K. yielded the breakfast staple known as cereal flakes. Making Red Blood RedderIn many ways, the cereal flake is the perfect consumer product. It's easy to produce, easy to sell, and surprisingly lucrative. To this day, cereal comes with an eye-popping profit margin of 50 percent. These merits became clear to Charles Post, a failed suspender salesman who moved to Battle Creek in 1895. Post began selling knock-off versions of Kellogg's products with a twist of his own—advertising. At the time, advertising was associated with snake-oil salesmen and con artists. But Post, who had a background in sales, didn't mind drizzling a little snake oil on his product. He published pamphlets with titles such as "The Road To Wellville" and claimed his cereal, Grape-Nuts, could cure appendicitis, improve one's IQ, and even "make red blood redder." By 1903, he was clearing $1 million a year. Across town, Dr. Kellogg refused to sully The San's reputation with heathen advertising, and his profits suffered as a result. W.K., however, had no such qualms and set out to emulate Post. In his first national campaign, he told women to "Wink at your grocer, and see what you get." (Answer: a free box of Kellogg's Corn Flakes.) Within a year, he'd sold 1 million cases of cereal. With the leading cereal makers embracing such unabashed hucksterism, it was clear that cereal's connection to its fundamentalist roots had come to an end. Thinking Outside the BoxAll across America, the eyes of investors lit up with dollar signs, and would-be cereal barons descended on Battle Creek like locusts. By 1911, 107 brands of corn flakes were being made in Battle Creek alone. But the cereal business had one major drawback—there was little substantive difference between brands. To stand out from the crowd, manufacturers realized that they had to focus more on the outside of the box than on what was inside. Some tried decorating their products with adjectives, creating names like University Brand Daintily Crisped Flaked Corn. Others competed to appear the healthiest. Tryabita, for example, was infused with celery flavor because, well, it sounded healthy. But the real winner was a cereal called Force. Its mascot, Sunny Jim, was a strutting, top-hatted gentleman who became so popular in newspapers and magazines that other cereal makers rushed to create their own mascots. For a cereal called Elijah's Manna, Charles Post even tried putting a picture of the prophet on the label. Although the product was eventually pulled, one industry ground rule had been established: Every box needs a character. Before long, cereal makers had an insatiable appetite for finding the right mascot, regardless of the cost. During the Depression, Post Toasties decided to use cartoon animals on its boxes and paid its cartoonist $1.5 million in the first year. That artist was Walt Disney, and he used the earnings to build the Disney empire. The Children Are the FutureCereal's total reliance on advertising meant that it was essential for companies to keep up with new forms of media. Quaker Oats, for example, hitched its sales to the rise of radio in the 1920s by giving away more than 1 million radios as part of a promotion. Cereal companies were also quick to buy up radio stations and produce radio shows. For the most part, they churned out dramas and gossip shows aimed at housewives. But a radical shift in demographics came in 1936, thanks to a boy named Skippy. A Dennis the Menace type who frequently interrupted his adventures to extol the virtues of Wheaties, Skippy was the first cereal character directly marketed to children. As it turned out, kids ate him up, and cereal producers learned an important lesson: Children are suckers. The flood of kid-friendly, cereal-shilling characters that followed reads like a Who's Who of American iconography, including the Lone Ranger, Dick Tracy, and Buck Rogers. By the 1960s, cereal advertisers were devoting 90 percent of their budgets to reaching children. In the process of targeting the young, cereal companies also realized that kids don't care about their colons. They want sugar. Lots of sugar. In 1939, a Philadelphia heater salesman named Jim Rex created the first sugared cereal, called Ranger Joe Popped Wheat Honnies. Ironically, he designed the cereal to minimize the amount of sugar children consumed. He reasoned that if he lightly presweetened his product, kids wouldn't add more sugar on top. He was wrong, and his good intentions were lost on bigger companies. After Ranger Joe sales skyrocketed, manufacturers started producing cereals such as Sugar Smacks, which contained a shocking 56 percent sugar. How did cereal companies reconcile this with their original commitment to the health movement? Taking a page out of Post's playbook, they declared that sugar wasn't bad for you because it gave you the fuel you needed to start your day. With trusted radio personalities extolling the "energy-giving" virtues of cereal, impressionable kids and their frazzled parents rushed to stores. TV NationTelevision took advertising for sugar cereals to a new level, and the master of the new medium was an ad man named Leo Burnett. He invented TV programs specifically designed to entertain children and sell Kellogg's products. Much like Skippy a decade before, Burnett's characters would turn to the screen in the middle of a show and pitch the merits of a particular brand. There was nothing subtle about it. Howdy Doody, Roy Rogers, Andy Griffith, Rin Tin Tin, the Beverly Hillbillies, Yogi Bear, and Fred Flintstone all became television icons because they were good at selling cereal. Also at Burnett's urging, cereal companies invested heavily in early television technology. (They still do; cereal is the second-largest advertiser on television today, behind automobiles.) The financial backing let them shape the medium to suit their needs—namely, adding color. Burnett was one of the earliest believers in motivational psychology and understood that colors appealed to kids and moms subliminally. When color TV became a reality, he persuaded Kellogg to use anthropomorphized cartoon animals as mascots. He thought animation would make for better, more colorful commercials. The first mascot they produced was Tony the Tiger, whose meteoric success was followed by hundreds of other cartoon icons. Burnett's advertising style was so effective that cereal sales continued to rise every year, unlike most products at the grocery store. After a while, parents and child psychologists became concerned that the ads were a little too effective. In the late 1960s, consumer advocates claimed that using cartoon characters to target children was overly manipulative, if not unethical. Eventually, in 1990, they forced Congress to pass a law banning TV characters from pitching directly to children in the middle of a show. Protective measures aside, cereal had strayed far from its wholesome origins. While Dr. Jackson's dream of displacing pork chops from the breakfast table had become a reality, his cereal wasn't what it used to be. Bitten by the fangs of consumerism, Granula had transformed into Count Chocula in the course of a century. __________________________ The above article is by Ian Lender, the author of Alcoholica Esoterica: A Collection of Useful and Useless Information As It Relates to the History and Consumption of All Manner of Booze, and is reprinted with permission from the July-August 2008 issue of mental_floss magazine. The setup is basically putting pitch in a funnel and see if it drips out. The point is to prove that pitch is a viscous liquid that will flow, instead of a solid. The problem is that it takes years for a drop to actually drop, and has never been witnessed. A similar experiment was begun in 1944 at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Taking the Console Wars to the Streets Posted: 18 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT If West Side Story was about video game consoles, this would be the end result. The gaming lounges at Comic Con pretty much look like this battle only without the fun singing and dancing that save you from wanting to smash your own brains in. Via GeekWire
Posted: 18 Jul 2013 07:00 AM PDT Now that's an old timey National Geographic magazine to treasure forever! Artist Glen Brogan (previously on Neatorama) imagined how Indiana Jones' esteemed father, professor Henry Walton Jones, Sr., would look like gracing the cover of National Geographic in the late 1930s. Posted: 18 Jul 2013 06:30 AM PDT 'Tis Thursday, so you know what it means, Neatoramanauts: it's time for the What Is It? Game, brought to you by the always amusing What Is It? Blog. What is this thing in the picture? Your guess can win you a free T-shirt of your choice from the NeatoShop. Here's how to play: Place your guess in the comment section below. One guess per comment, but you can enter as many guesses as you'd like in separate comments. Post no URLs or weblinks. Let's change it up a bit: we'll pick two winners who submit funny (albeit ultimately incorrect) guesses. If you guessed right, then good for ya - but you don't win anything, mmkay? So, it's up to you, funny people: you have twice the chance of winning that T-shirt now. Please write your T-shirt selection alongside your guess. If you don't include a selection, you forfeit the prize. We highly suggest you take a look at the NeatoShop's new selection of Funny T-shirts and Science T-Shirts. Ready? Go for it! The What Is It? Blog has more pictures, and other mystery items. Good luck!
Posted: 18 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT io9 just released a great article on how to spice up your Comic Con cosplay (so you won't be yet another Spider-Man or Slave Leia). While the article has some great advice on picking a good costume, I couldn't help but be overcome with joy by this photo, used as one of their examples, of the Dood, who appeared on the scene at the Galifrey One convention.
"She Loves You" by The Beatles Posted: 18 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT Neatorama presents a guest post from actor, comedian, and voiceover artist Eddie Deezen. Visit Eddie at his website. "She loves you yeah yeah yeah!!"
Today, we all live in such an "I've seen everything" society, we seem beyond shock (and I think we practically are). One has to put his or her mind into a 1964 mind-set to imagine how staggeringly shocking the Beatles and their haircuts were in the early days of 1964. The image the Beatles presented to Middle America in those gentler, milder (saner?) days would perhaps compare with us witnessing a flying saucer from another planet landing in the middle of New York City or maybe turning on the TV and seeing a group of female singers who performed topless. |
