How-to Save The Money For Literally Anything on This Planet

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 12:00 AM PST

“I want a hair transplant. It’s going to be expensive, but I plan on saving up all year for it.”

This is what some random dude brought up to his friend at the bar one night. This guy’s plan was to work like animal and save up for a hair transplant. He was willing to do anything that it took to get the money together to finally have thick hair.

Not sure how I got involved in this conversation, but I ran away the second that these guys started bragging about how hair is the key to success with women. Have some confidence and lift your chain a little higher. You don’t need beautiful hair like me to meet women. You don’t need to spend a fortune on a hair transplant to improve your confidence. However, I’m not here to judge you or to tell you what to do. It’s your life. It’s your money. I just want to help you with saving lots of money.

Where am I going with this? It doesn’t matter if you want a hair transplant to improve your love life or a new car to get to your new job. I want to show you how you can afford any purchase that you want to make.

I’m not going to tell you what to buy. That’s up to you. I just want you to know right now that you can have anything that you want, NOT everything that you want. You have to be willing to accept this if you want to move on.

Let’s look at how you can save for any purchase on this planet…

Make Money In College

Decide what it is that you want.

What does your heart desire so badly? What’s that big purchase that you want to start saving up for?

A few questions to ask yourself are…

 • Do you finally want to check out a beach vacation?
 • Do you want to backpack through Europe?
 • Is it a new car that you want?
 • Maybe you want an iPad?
 • Perhaps you want to take a dating course? I know a guy that charges other guys $3,000 for the weekend to learn how to approach women.

Only you will know what you really want. The point here is to pin point exactly what that is and to stick to it. You can’t have it all and you can’t be too general. If you want an iPad, just admit that you want an iPad and start shopping around. This can be anything that you want.

Now you have to answer an important question once you’ve figured out what you want…

Is this really affordable?

Should you really be saving up for this item or experience that you have in mind? There are times where certain expenses just aren’t possible. It’s usually common sense.

If you’re a graduate student or recent graduate, you might not be able to afford that Ferrari — yet! Sorry stud. If you don’t have a job or any income, then you’re going to be limited with what you can buy as well.

I have two key tips if you want to totally decide if that purchase is worth it.

Start looking around for prices.

What are the prices like right now? Are there discounts? Do prices fluctuate?

If you feel that the price of this item is something that you can slowly save up for, then go for it. If the price is always going to be way too high or if prices fluctuate, then you might want to wait a bit longer. There’s no harm in waiting. I’ve been putting off my iPad purchase for the longest time. One day I will buy one. Just not yet.

Look at your other expenses.

Do you have the flexibility to even start saving for this? Would your other expenses in your spending interfere too much?

For example, my passion is trips. I save up for trips. I’m always saving up for my next trip, adventure, or even a one night escape. I’m realistic about this. I know that I can’t save up for much else in terms of a major expense. I’m cool with that. Will you be cool with saving up for your one major expense?

Once you decide what you want and figure out that it’s affordable, it’s time to get the momentum rolling.

Save Money

How can I break this expense down into smaller increments?

$5,000 in one shot is a lot. If you break this down over one year it’s not that much. It’s only $13.70 a day or $96.15 a week. Much more affordable.

You can play around with the calculator below. Type in how much you want to save to see what your monthly goal should be. You can then break this monthly goal down to the week, day, hour, or even the minute. Every minute counts! Okay, maybe that’s a bit too far.

Loading Financial Calculator...

How will you now break this expense down into smaller increments? You can automatically deduct money off your paycheck every pay period to go into a separate account or you can literally go out of your way to cut an expense/put the money into savings.

What works for me? I find ways to cut out certain items from my spending. I then use this money on whatever I want to save up for. The other day I cut out a few subscriptions. Next, I’m debating on cutting down my cell phone plan because I really don’t need all of those additional features.

What am I willing to cut out?

What are you going to cut out of your spending? One major expense, a minor daily cost, or a delay of a purchase can really go a long way here.

I love to travel and my friends know this. They know that I’m not too eager about spending money on other areas. I would much rather use my creativity to find cheaper alternatives for going out than to pretend to be a baller and go home broke. I’ve also been working on improving how much money I spend on food. It’s not good yet, but I’m getting better.

I want you to cut something right now and then to immediately put this money towards your savings. Repeat this process for an extended period of time until you have enough money for that hair transplant or Ferrari. The trick is that you MUST cut something. The good news is that you don’t have to cut everything.

Work towards this goal mercilessly.

Now it’s time to get serious about saving up for this purchase. Cut everything out. Stop wearing condoms if you have to (just kidding of course). If you really want to make this purchase, you’ll find a way. If you don’t want it bad enough, you’ll think of excuses.

The other trick is to set a clear deadline. By when do you want to have the money saved for your new iPad? Is it coming up soon? Do you have an annual trip that you want to save for?

Once you have a clear purchase in mind, you can see if it’s affordable. If it’s affordable, you need to figure out how you can afford this. Then you work on cutting out the crap and being ruthless. Does this make sense?

You, my friends, now have to power to save up for literally any purchase on this planet. There’s just one more step left…

My challenge to you!

Since you know how to save for anything on this planet, what are you going to do about it? This isn’t going to be another one of those articles where you just read, close the window, and move on with your life. I want you to take real action.

I want you to open up a new savings account and put $20 towards that huge purchase. I also want you to label this account (if your bank allows you) so that you know exactly what this money is for.

Ally Bank ® Online Savings Account

[Note: I do earn a commission for promoting specific bank accounts. I only promote accounts that I've heard good things about or have personally tried. At the end of the day it doesn't matter which savings account you use or if you even put this money under your bed.]

What are you going to start saving for? It can be anything. Don’t be afraid to use your imagination.

The Strange Side of Financial Claims

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 02:00 AM PST

The following is a guest post…

If you've been injured physically or mentally, it's within your rights to claim compensation if the injury was not your fault.

Sometimes the so-called 'compensation culture' goes a little too far though. Let's take a look at some of the strangest claims for compensation to date.

 • In October 1999, a man named Jerry Williams was provoking his neighbours' chained up beagle dog by shooting at it with a pellet gun. When the dog eventually bit Mr Williams in the buttocks, he sued and was awarded $14,500 plus medical expenses.
 • Justin Beiber has been the subject of several claims, but none are stranger than that made by Stacey Betts. After attending one of his concerts in July 2010, Ms Betts claims she suffered hearing loss and tinnitus after Justin "enticed the crowd into a frenzy of screams by continuously waving his arms in a quick upward motion," and is attempting to sue the pop sensation for $9.2million.
 • After donating a kidney to his wife, Richard Batista didn't expect his marriage to end only four years later. When his wife, Danwell, filed for divorce from the Long Island doctor, he decided to sue her for using his kidney and claimed for payment of $1.5million. He claimed this was a direct result of his wife cheating on him.
 • While weather reports are supposed to predict the weather accurately, they also are known for making mistakes. One Israeli woman sued a TV station for this when they predicted good weather, causing her to "dress lightly". However, the woman ended up caught in the rain, and caught flu, causing her to miss a week of work and spend money on medication. She also claimed for stress caused, and won $1000.
 • Macrida Patterson, a 52-year-old LA traffic cop, sued Victoria's Secret due to damages to her eye. The thong Ms Patterson purchased from the store featured a rhinestone heart on the side, which eventually broke and flew into her eye.

If you think that the above claims are strange wait until you see the recent stats on male grooming. A UK no win no fee company first4lawyers.com recently published a post showing that men are hurting themselves more frequently by male grooming techniques. The article can be found by clicking here and is definitely worth a read.

Life in the Deepest Ocean Vents Ever Discovered

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 03:00 AM PST

v

Deep sea hydrothermal vents provide geothermal warmth to ocean water that doesn't get much warmth from the sun. These mineral-rich vents are like "the oases of the deepest ocean," and are thought to be places where many life forms -and maybe life itself- got its start.

A few weeks ago, a group of scientists on a National Oceanography Centre expedition in the Caribbean stumbled across this vent, the deepest ever found at 5,000 meters below the ocean's surface. Since then, the group has been plumbing the depths of the Beebe Vent Field with remotely-operated submersibles, taking pictures, discovering new species, and finding some unexpected surprises.

That's over three miles down! See plenty of pictures from the expedition at io9. Link -via Daily of the Day

Scientists Uncover Invisible Motion in Video

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 01:00 AM PST

A team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory have developed a computer algorithm the detects movements that are so small or subtle as to be imperceptible to human eyes. The program then amplifies these movements kinetically or by color changes to the point that we can see them in video recordings. The program is called Eulerian Video Magnification.

The team originally developed the program to monitor neonatal babies without making physical contact. But they quickly learned that the algorithm can be applied to other videos to reveal changes imperceptible to the naked eye. Prof. William T. Freeman, a leader on the team, imagines its use in search and rescue, so that rescuers could tell from a distance if someone trapped on a ledge, say, is still breathing.

“Once we amplify these small motions, there’s like a whole new world you can look at,” he said.

Some of the applications suggested for this new technology include medical diagnosis, finding oil, seeing how much a building sways, detecting lies, assessing manufacturing processes, and even determining whether a poker player is bluffing. See a video with more examples at the New York Times technology blog, Bits. Link -via Digg

Robotic Bat Wing

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 12:00 AM PST

Photo: Breuer and Swartz labs/Brown University

The Batwing is still a few years off, but researchers have got the basics down with this robotic bat wing:

Bat wings are complex things. They span most of the length of a bat’s body, from shoulder to foot. They are supported and moved by two arm bones and five finger-like digits. Over those bones is a super-elastic skin that can stretch up to 400 percent without tearing. The eight-inch robot mimics that anatomy with plastic bones carefully fabricated on a 3-D printer to match proportions of a real bat. The skin is made of a silicone elastomer. The joints are actuated by servo motors that pull on tendon-like cables, which in turn pull on the joints.

The robot doesn’t quite match the complexity of a real bat’s wing, which has 25 joints and 34 degrees of freedom. An exact simulation isn’t feasible given today’s technology and wouldn’t be desirable anyway, Bahlman said. Part of why the model is useful is that it distills bat flapping down to five fundamental parameters: flapping frequency, flapping amplitude, the angle of the flap relative to the ground, the amount of time used for the downstroke, and the extent to which the wings can fold back.

Experimental data aside, Bahlman said there were many lessons learned just in building the robot and getting it to work properly. “We learned a lot about how bats work from trying to duplicate them and having things go wrong,” he said.

Hummingbird Hawk Moth

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 08:00 PM PST

Photo: Thomas Bresson/Flickr

You'd be forgiven if you thought the picture above is of a hummingbird. It's actually a moth aptly named the Hummingbird Hawk Moth (Macroglossum stellatarum).

Ark in Space has more on this marvelous species:

With no legs or claws – and certainly no beak what you have here is a moth. No ordinary moth either – just take a look at that tongue. In truth, it isn’t actually a tongue. You may well ask, then, if it isn’t a tongue, what on earth is it?

There aren’t many – if any – tongues that can do that and it has a different function. What that amazing body part is called is a proboscis. That is the name given to an extended appendage from the head of an animal. This elongated organ is for sucking (more about that later) and it is also known as a haustellum. It is made up of two tubes that are held together by hooks. Strangely (and even scarily) enough these tubes can be separated – unhooked – when the moth needs to clean it.

Think of Brad Downey as an uncooperative urban planner. Here's how he describes how the city calls to him:

For me, everything is inspirational, But, mostly the city. It is the place that humans dump all their vices and virtues. It is a completely human world. It tries to shut out all other forms of life. Art is about the human experience. But, Art lives on longer than one lifetime. It has the power to change things about the past, present and future. It can affect life that follows it. Art is not life it is the product of life. It is meant to teach and question the nature of the human experience.

Add this to the Swanson Pyramid of Greatness. After all, it's full, thick and square facial hair as well as thick and impenetrable torso. It's good to see that Leonardo da Vinci gave 100% and not 110% when he created this. Because 110% is impossible. Only idiots give that.

But don't cry at the beautiful sight of the Ron Swanson Mona Lisa. Because crying is only acceptable at funerals and the Grand Canyon.

Borrowing Seeds From the Library

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 02:00 PM PST

Photo: Dylan Johns

Borrowing books from libraries is old hat. The new hotness is borrowing seeds to plant in your garden. That's what the Basalt Public Library and the Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute in Colorado are offering:

Here's how it works: A library card gets you a packet of seeds. You then grow the fruits and vegetables, harvest the new seeds from the biggest and best, and return those seeds so the library can lend them out to others.

NPR's Salt Blog has the story, but no mention on what happens if your plantings failed to produce the seed that you need to return to the library: Link

More of Ol' Jay's Brainteasers

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 01:00 PM PST

Uh-oh. It looks like Jay has written the BRI team into another bunch of puzzles. Let's see how we do.

1. HUNGRY BOOKWORM

Kait is the newest member of the BRI team. To test out whether whether we were really as smart as she's heard (we're not), she asked us a math question that even her 11-year-old son C.J. answered correctly: "Three Bathroom Readers are stacked vertically next to each other on a bookshelf, with their spines facing out. The covers of the books each measure 1/8". The pages of each book measures 2". If a bookworm starts eating at page one of the book on the left, then eats through the books in a straight line until he gets to the last page of the book on the right, how many inches of book will he have eaten?"

2. THE 5TH CONDITION

Uncle John strolled into the office and announced, "Civics quiz, everybody!" After we whined a bit, he asked a question that sounded tough, but he assured us it was not. "According to the U.S. Constitution," he said, "five conditions must be met for a candidate to become president. He or she must: 1) be born in the United States, 2) be 35 years old or more, 3) be an American citizen, and 4) have resided in the U.S. for at least 14 years. What's the fifth condition? You may think you don't know it, but you do."

3. SURROUNDED

Julia is riding a horse. Directly to her left is a hippo traveling at the same speed. In front of her is an elephant, also traveling at the same speed. Following behind her -at the same speed- is a lion. And to her right is a ledge. How will Julia make it to safety?

v4. BUILDER BLUNDER

JoAnn, Melinda, and Monica each purchased a new home in Porcelain Estates, an exclusive community consisting of nine shiny houses. But the builders forgot to add an important part of the houses, forcing the three new homeowners to buy the part at the hardware store. One thousand would have cost $4.00. Fifty would have cost $2.00. But JoAnn, Melinda, and Monica needed only one each and paid a combined total of $3.00. What did the builders forget to add?

5. THE RUNAROUND

Two-eyed Jeff was sitting in a chair in the middle of the room. One-eyed Jeff walked up and said, "I'll bet you a dollar that before I run around your chair three times, you'll get up. And I promise I won't push you or throw things at you. When you get up, it will be by choice." Two-eyed Jeff took the bet, thinking he'd make an easy dollar. But it was soon obvious that One-eyed Jeff had won. Why?

6. A MOTHER'S GIFT

Amy challenged us with this classic riddle:

Black as night I'll always be,
Until my mother smothers me.
Then clear as ice I will become
In the rough. Thank you, Mum!
What am I?

7. FEELING FLAT

Thom drove all the way from Crappo, Maryland, to Flushing, New York, without realizing that his car had a flat tire, but arrived safely with four fully inflated tires. How?

8. COFFEE DELIVERY!

vTrying to figure out the answers to these questions tired us out, but then along came Angie with a large pot of freshly brewed coffee. Yay! "I can give you one gallon," she said. "But you'll have to measure it out yourselves." Then she handed us a three-gallon bucket and a five-gallon bucket. As we were sitting there dumbfounded, Maggie told us not to worry -she'd do it. How?

Continue reading when you want to see the answers.

Highlight the area after the teaser title to see the answer.

1. HUNGRY BOOKWORM

The bookworm only eats through 2.5 inches of book. That's because he started at page one of the book on the left (which is facing the right side) and only has to eat through the front cover of book 1, the back cover of book 2, all of the pages of book 2, then through the front cover of book 2, then through the back cover of book 3. At that point, he will have reached the last page of book 3 and can stop eating.

2. THE 5TH CONDITION

The person must also be elected.

3. SURROUNDED

Julia will just have to wait until the merry-go-round ride ends …and then dismount.

4. BUILDER BLUNDER

The house address numbers were missing. Each number costs $1.00. So 1000 would have cost $4.00 and 50 would have cost $2.00. But since their new neighborhood only had nine houses, their addresses were a single number, costing them a total of $3.00.

5. THE RUNAROUND

One-eyed Jeff ran around the chair twice and then said, "I'll be back in a week to run around it a third time," knowing that Two-eyed Jeff wouldn't be able to sit there for an entire week.

6. A MOTHER'S GIFT

The answer is coal, which starts out black, but becomes a diamond in the rough after Mother Earth "smothers" it for a few million years. Thanks, Mom!

7. FEELING FLAT

The flat tire was Thom's spare tire -in his trunk the whole time.

8. COFFEE DELIVERY!

Maggie filled the three-gallon bucket with coffee and then poured it into the five-gallon bucket. Then she filled the three-gallon bucket again and carefully poured it into the five-gallon bucket until it was full, leaving exactly one gallon of coffee in the three-gallon bucket. And then we had coffee!

Why Atheists Need A Temple

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 12:00 PM PST

Even if religion isn't true, asserted writer and philosopher Alain de Botton, why can't we enjoy the best bits? To that end (and to circumvent the "boring debate between fundamentalist believers and non-believers" about religion and God), de Botton proposed in his new book "Religion for Atheists" that what atheism needs are ... temples!

As religions have always known, a beautiful building is an indispensable part of getting your message across. Books alone won’t do it.

De Botton argues that you definitely don’t need a god or gods to justify a temple.

You can build a temple to anything that’s positive and good. That could mean: a temple to love, friendship, perspective, calm, generosity…

This proposal is part of a wider argument de Botton makes that atheists should stop being merely negative about religion and engage with what people actually enjoy about religion. They should then copy it – simply without the God-bit.

With architect Tom Greenall and artist Jordan Jon Hodgson, de Botton proposed a Temple to Perspective, a 150-foot (46 m) tall black tower in the heart of the City of London. Each centimeter of the tower's height equates to one million years of life. At the bottom, there's a single line of gold - no more than a millimeter thick - that represents the entire existence of humankind.

Josh Kurp and photographer Nadia Chaudhury went to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to see the places where the TV series Breaking Bad is shot. They saw (and photographed) plenty of locations, and since the show was in production at the time, they also got to meet series star Bryan Cranston. You can take the tour yourself, in a virtual sense, at Uproxx. May contain spoilers for those not up-to-date on the series. Link

LEGO Hogwarts by Alice Finch

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 10:00 AM PST

Now this is fantastic! Seattle LEGO builder Alice Finch spent a year building a replica of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry from J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter book series out of 400,000 pieces of LEGO.

It would've been impressive enough had she just built the exterior of the building, but Alice also recreated the interior in stunning details. The Brothers Brick interviewed the LEGO artist:

TBB: Do you have any idea how many bricks you used?

AF: 400,000 bricks give or take a few. When dealing with this large of a structure, it is very difficult to know how many bricks there are. Some experienced builders have said more, some less, so this is about the middle of the guesses. I do know there are about 10,000 bricks just in the big central staircase to give you a sense of scale. It is built in the shape of an L, where each side is about 13 feet (nearly 4 meters) long.

TBB: That’s a lot of bricks. How much did it cost, and where did you get all that LEGO?

AF: I do not know how much it costs and I don’t really want to know, although lots of other people do. I have ordered most of the tan by the box, and many other parts by the hundreds or thousands from all over the world. For example, most of the sand green roof slopes came from Germany.

And they did it over and over to make sure they got all the right camera angles. You can see a behind-the-scenes video with more information. Do not try this! I saw Wile E. A Few Things You May Not Know About Seth MacFarlane

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 05:00 AM PST

Seth MacFarlane made quite a splash as the host of the Academy Awards Show. You'll soon know more about him, as Neatorama presents a guest post from actor, comedian, and voiceover artist Eddie Deezen. Visit Eddie at his website.

v(Image credit: Flickr user Gage Skidmore)

Seth MacFarlane is the highest-paid talent in the history of the animation industry. He started his professional animation career writing for the Cartoon Network's various shows, including Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, and Dexter's Laboratory. But he really put his name ion the animation map with the creation of his series Family Guy, which made its debut in 1999. Cancelled twice, Family Guy survived both times, and is now rightly acknowledged as one of (if not "the") funniest cartoon shows in the history of television. Seth voices several characters on the show, switching back-and-forsth from one character to another, as if possessed.

He also created the shows American Dad (2005) and The Cleveland Show (2009). Seth made his feature film debut ion 2011 with the smash hit Ted, voicing the title role of a smart ass, wise-cracking teddy bear. Okay, let's take a look at a few things you may not have known about the multi-talented Seth MacFarlane.

* His full name is Seth Woodbury MacFarlane. The Woodbury comes from a beloved town drunk in Gardiner, Maine, where his mother's family was raised.

* He started his animation career at the ripe old age of two, drawing his first cartoon characters.

* MacFarlane didn't drink his first beer until he was 23.

* His favorite group is Queen, who he considers a superior group to the Beatles. He says his friends really give it to him on this one!

* MacFarlane doesn't really watch TV much, but loves movies, including the films of Woody Allen, the Bob Hope and Bing Crosby "Road" pictures, John Wayne's Red River, Caddyshack, and Steve Martin's The Jerk.

* His all-time favorite movie is The Sound of Music.

* MacFarlane was scheduled to be a passenger on American Airlines flight 11 on September 11, 2001. His travel agent mistakenly told him his flight was at 8:15 AM, when it was actually a 7:45 AM flight. This misinformation caused him to miss the flight. Tragically, flight 11 was hijacked by terrorists and flown into the World Trade Center, killing all passengers. After hearing about the tragedy, Seth was able to get through to his parents and inform them that he was alright.

* In 2004, People magazine included him in its "Sexiest man Alive" issue.

v* MacFarlane is a skilled pianist, and has a nine-foot piano at home which he plays every night after work.

* He discovered Frank Sinatra while in college and is a huge fan of "Old Blue Eyes." He once threw a "Rat pack" themed party and hired Frank Sinatra, Jr. to perform.

* A gifted singer who has performed at Carnegie Hall, Seth released his first album of classic standards Music is Better Than Words in 2011. He recorded his songs on a microphone once used by Frank Sinatra and was trained by a couple in their 90s who had trained Frank.

* MacFarlane has a huge desk at home, which he never uses for writing. "Ever since I was a kid, I've always used the kitchen counter."

* According to his Family Guy co-star Alex Borstein, who play's Peter's wife Lois, Seth's tastes in pop culture are "very retro." He "doesn't have email, doesn't own a computer, and despises most new music."

Envelopes That Claim to be Important

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 01:00 AM PST

The trend in junk mail lately is to make the advertising look like something important that you really feel the need to open. There are quite a few tricks in the array of disguises an envelope can take, and Windell and Lenore at Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories have been collecting examples to share with you. How many different types of these "important" envelopes have you seen? By the way, "registered documents" is nothing like "registered mail." Link -via Boing Boing

Man Commits a Crime to Get Healthcare

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 11:00 AM PST

Sometimes, logic dictates that the best course of action to treat a serious illness is to go to prison. Here's an amazing story of how one man committed a crime in order to get the medical care he desperately needed:

A 41-year-old man who had been incarcerated came to see me recently. While in prison he got in a fight, which led to a CT scan. He hadn't broken anything, but the scan did surreptitiously show two aneurysms. Both were in his hepatic artery (the artery that feeds his liver).

They were small, so the doctors kept an eye on the aneurysms without doing surgery. But the next time they checked, they had nearly doubled in size.

He was referred to a surgeon at a different hospital than the one I work at, and underwent an angiogram, to see the aneurysms better. The surgeons there said that he was sure to die if they did not intervene, and that they should schedule a surgery within the coming weeks.

Fortunately for him (or so he thought) he was released from prison one week later. When he returned for his pre-op visit, though, he was told that since he'd been released from prison, he no longer had insurance to cover the operation. [...]

... not knowing what else to to, it occurred to him that the easiest way to get the care he needed would be to get back in prison.

The next week, he went to a department store and, making sure a security guard saw him, pocketed some moisturizing cream. He looked up at the guard, smiled, and walked out.

After he was arrested, he wrote a note to the judge saying that he needed to get back into prison for a year, to get an operation. He told me the judge said "I'll give you 14 months, go get your surgery."

Doctor Joshua Mezrich told the story over at The Atlantic: Link

Why Buy Jeans When You Can Lease Them?

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 09:00 AM PST

Is it ridiculous? Remember: some people will buy pre-ripped and faded jeans. Don't ask me why, but they do. So maybe the premise of Bert van Son's Lease Jeans has potential:

Customers pay a one-off 20 euro fee ($27), covering shipment and admin, and then 5 euros a month for a year (80 euros in total). At the end of the contract, they have three options. They can send the jeans back. They can get a new pair, paying a reship cost and the lease fee. Or, they can choose to keep the jeans, paying another four months at 5 euro plus a further 20 euro deposit. That goes towards another pair, when they eventually need one. Since launching in January at a jazz club in Amsterdam, several hundred people have signed up.

Next up: underwear rentals!

Hands-free Deer Rescue

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 08:00 AM PST

(YouTube link)

Ian Waugh spotted a deer and her fawn stranded on the ice over Antigonish Harbour in Nova Scotia. He called the Department of Natural Resources, which sent a crew who decided the ice was too thin to risk sending anyone out to get the deer.

A few hours later, Waugh spotted a DNR helicopter near the deer. The fawn ran to shore and the chopper came down close to the mother.

“The wash, because the ice was so smooth…the wash was so powerful that it actually started to push the deer,” says Waugh.

He says the deer eventually stopped struggling and went with the flow, while a DNR officer and the pilot directed the animal to shore.

With some human help over the last few feet, the deer was able to take off on her own at the shoreline. Link -via Arbroath

President Eisenhower Was a Painter

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 07:00 AM PST

Eisenhower

I had no idea! General and later President Dwight Eisenhower was, like his wartime colleague Winston Churchill, a painter. He took up the hobby at the age of 58. Sister Wendy Beckett, the famous art historian, writes:

If we really look at this mountain path framed with evergreens, we begin to notice, as the artist did, many stray touches of color, yellows and pinks, that tie the whole picture together tonally. Who but the artist himself dare call this a "daub"? No great art, needless to say, but pleasing art, art that has a lyrical sweetness to it, however unassumingly expressed.

Teenager's 10-Mile Walk in the Snow to a Job Interview Lands Him a Job

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 06:00 AM PST

ReaganJhaqueil Reagan, 18, has grit.

Last week, he was walking to a job interview in Indianapolis--ten miles, through the snow. A local restraurant owner met him on the journey, learned what he was doing, and saw the potential for a great employee. He promptly offered Reagan a job:

Reagan was spotted by a local restaurant owner last Friday walking 10 miles to a job interview for a cashier position at a local thrift store. When the restaurant owner, Art Bouvier, realized the trek Reagan was willing to make, he hired him on the spot for an entry-level position at his Papa Roux restaurant.

“I have employees who can’t get here to work on time even though they have cars and very comfortable houses,” Bouvier said. “Here’s a kid who planned his morning to walk three hours and 10 miles in the snow just for an interview.”

“If you’ll do that, you’ll definitely show up for work on time so I thought, ‘Yeah, I want you,’” he said.

One of Bouvier's customers heard Reagan's story and gave him thirteen one-month bus passes so that Reagan won't have to walk to work.

Does The Sky Fall When Interest Rates Drop?

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 08:04 AM PST

“Interest rates have dropped! We must immediately panic and overturn the government”– said by weirdos.

Recently, in Canada, RBC bought Ally Bank and decided to cut the interest rates on the savings accounts. With the interest rates down, I saw nothing but protests and complaints on Facebook/social media. I didn’t really react because I don’t have an account with them and because the interest rates were already horribly low to begin with.

I always see people stressing about interest rates and small rate changes. They act like it’s the end of the world. While it does suck that a bank would disrespect you and your money by cutting the amount of money they give you, it’s not the worst thing.

Does the sky really fall when interest rates drop?

I decided to do some research to see the numbers involved here with the high interest accounts being cut. I went over to the Ally Bank savings account calculator to see how the interest works and how much money you can earn off interest.

What are the real numbers you can make off interest?

So let’s say you have $50,000 just sitting around (totally doubt it!) and the current interest rate of 0.9% is in effect. What do you earn per year in interest? $452.03.

What will $5,000 do? $45.20.

So you have to put up five grand to earn $45 bucks. That’s horrible if you ask me. Only $45 for that much money is insane. You could do so much more with five big ones.

A savings account is a great place to store your money and to hide it. It’s not a great place to make money on your money.

This then leads to an important topic that I love to cover on here…

Where can you keep your money?

Where should I invest my money? I have a bunch of savings and I don't know where to put the money?

I’ve received a version of one of those questions many times through text message, Facebook inbox, Twitter DM, drunken chat in person or blog comment.

Savings account.

Yes, interest rates suck. However, there's nothing wrong with being boring. I’ve kept my money in a savings account recently because I love the liquidity and I’ve been more focused on investing in myself.

If you’re not sure with what you want to do with your money, but you just want to save it, I would recommend a savings account for now.

Invest the money.

You can always invest in the stock market.

Check out my piece where I look at how the stock market works. If you want to get started, you should read about stock trading tools that I’ve covered. You can get started today if you’re not afraid to take on some risks. Those articles give you more than enough information to get started.

Enjoy experiences that life has to offer.

One of my long-time readers had just finished school with some savings and he had a job lined up already. I suggested to him that the best move to make would be to just to go on a once-in-a-lifetime sort of trip. We can help you plan your next adventure.

I actually highly recommend that every young person goes on an epic adventure or at least on a trip where they drink themselves silly while meeting new people. If you have some money saved and have always wanted to do this, now is the best time. Don’t wait until you’re older because something will always get in the way. This is when you’re the most free. Not when you get a full-time job or when you’re about to get married.

How do you allocate your money? You invest in anywhere fun?

Beef Rainbow

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 04:00 AM PST

Photo: Tim Dustrude/Dustrude Photography

I would've answered "fleshy deliciousness" (sorry, vegetarians!). That, or magic. But the folks at the USDA spoiled the fun by explaining it with science.

From Taylor Orci's post over at The Atlantic:

According to the USDA, "When light hits a slice of meat, it splits into colors like a rainbow." This is something called a "diffraction grating," essentially what happens when light waves bend or spread around a surface and create a pattern. It's the same thing that happens to make rainbows on the surface of a DVD. It's understandable that folks mistake diffracted light as a sign of spoilage, especially since the main color created by meat diffraction gratings is green. There is a reason why in Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham, the central conflict of the protagonist is his strong apprehension against eating green meat.

The True-Life Horror that Inspired Moby-Dick

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 07:00 PM PST

vIn November of 1820, a seafaring expedition went all wrong when a whale repeatedly attacked and sank the whaling ship the Essex. The young captain, George Pollard Jr. and the crew were stranded on three 20-foot boats for months. A few of them survived.

Pollard had told the full story to fellow captains over a dinner shortly after his rescue and to a missionary named George Bennet, and to Bennet it seemed like a confession. Certainly, it was grim: 92 days and sleepless nights at sea in a leaking boat with no food, his surviving crew going mad beneath the unforgiving sun, eventual cannibalism and the harrowing fate of two teenage boys, including Pollard’s first cousin, Owen Coffin. “But I can tell you no more—my head is on fire at the recollection,” Pollard told him. “I hardly know what I say.”

The story of the Essex crew inspired Herman Melville to write a novel about a whale hunter, which was not well received and only sold a few thousand copies in his lifetime. Read the whole story at Smithsonian's Past Imperfect blog. Link

Banknote Portraits by Philippe Pétremant

Timide (Shy)

In his 2010 series Les Sept Mercenaires (The Magnificent Seven), photographer Philippe Pétremant folded bank notes from various countries' currencies to create fantastic final portraits.

Description of his artwork from Circulations Festival:

His «The magnificent seven» series «plays with the ordinary and the banal to make the life come out, not the still life, which would mean accepting life and the presence of objects. Far beyond a simple representation, he dismantles the nature of reality. It is like that the artist has given still life a new twist: these pictures drift away from their subjects. Their pure states take the place of their object to offer the spectator the forms of the latencies, the vacuities and the qualms of the photographer. These photographs move, put the mode of their presence in state of crisis, their plastic beauty, questioning what is decorative and its close corollary, kitsch.» - Jacques Damez

Fresh Prince Theme Song Prompts School Lockdown

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 11:00 AM PST

vTravis Clawson's life got flipped, turned upside-down. A receptionist at an eye doctor's office in Pennsylvania called 19-year-old Clawson to confirm an appointment. Instead, she got an outgoing message that alarmed her. The receptionist then called Sewickley police, who contacted the Ambridge Area High School, where officials put the school on lockdown. Police found Clawson at the school and arrested him. An investigation determined that the outgoing message on the phone was Clawson singing the theme to the TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

All schools in the county were advised to lock down for about 20 minutes while police searched for a 19-year-old Ambridge Area High School student whose greeting to callers was mistakenly taken as a threat about “shooting people outside of the school.”

The actual line from the song is “And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school.” It is unclear from listening to Travis Clawson’s phone message whether he inadvertently twisted the words or it just was misheard by the receptionist from his Sewickley eye doctor’s office who sent the day’s events in motion.

Clawson was released and has not been charged with any crime, but his parents were urged to have him change the outgoing message on his phone. Link -via Fark

How Many Languages is it Possible to Know?

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 09:00 AM PST

vGraham Cansdale is a professional translator at the European Commission in Brussels. He is considered fluent in the 14 languages he uses in his work, but he has studied other languages. Cardinal Giuseppe Mezzofanti was a linguist who died in 1849; he was said to have known between 40 and 72 languages. Is this even possible?

There are millions of people, even in the mostly monolingual US, who speak more than one language at home. Competence in three languages is not unusual, and we've all heard stories of grandmas and grandpas who had to master four or five languages on their way from the old country to the new. In India it is common for people to go about their business every day using five or six different languages. But what about 10, 20, 30, 100 languages? What's the upper limit on the number of languages a person can know?

Michael Erard, in his fascinating book Babel No More, travels around the world in search of hyperpolyglots, people who study and learn large numbers of languages. He sheds light on the secrets of their success, and explains why it can be hard to put an exact number on language knowledge.

Mental_floss introduces us to seven hyperpolyglots, although how many languages they know depends on the meaning of "know," as there are different levels of fluency. Of course, only a polyglot would really understand how different those levels are. Link

Matchstick Men

matchstickmen

Wolfgang Stiller's Matchstick Men series consists of enormous matches shaped and burned to look like human heads, as well as matchboxes to scale. He gave an interview with Michael Corbin about the project, discussing the development and exhibition of his Matchstick Men. But it was this statement that grabbed my attention:

It might sound conservative, but I'm much more interested in matured artists and not so much into really young artists. Nowadays artists start showing right after graduating or even during their studies. The art world became a bit like the pop industry. One has to be "young and fresh." No one wants to miss the newest trend. I really don't care for that. An artist needs time to develop his or her own language and to be quite frank, I think someone who is 23 rarely has anything substantial to offer.

Do you agree or disagree with Stiller?

A Long, Strange Trip

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 05:00 AM PST

vAs medical marijuana gains acceptance across the country, one scientist thinks LSD should be next.

Long before he was a scientist, long before he wrote more than 100 journal articles, held six patents, or became an investigator for the NIH's Alzheimer's Disease Research center, Juan Sanchez-Ramos was an acid-dropping street artist. He had come to Paris in 1967 from Venezuela, intent on soaking up all the jazz and culture the city had to offer. His father, his two uncles, and his older brother were all doctors, and Sanchez-Ramos was expected to follow the family blueprint. Instead, he chose art. When student riots in Paris shut down his school and his father cut off his funds, a defiant Sanchez-Ramos decided to stay, hawking tourist portraits across Europe for pocket money and immersing himself in the psychedelic counterculture of the era. That's when he took his first hit of LSD.

For Sanchez-Ramos, dropping acid was an intensely intellectual experience. He was fascinated by the vivid Technicolor hallucinations, warped perception of time and space, and the temporary dismantling of the ego. "You see the relationship between time and matter, body and soul," he recalls. But what intrigued him most was his brain's chemistry. "I was extremely curious about how the brain generated consciousness, how images occur in [the visual system of] the brain," he says.

Since casual experimentation wouldn't answer his questions, he grasped for the science. As others of his generation "turned on, tuned in, and dropped out," Sanchez-Ramos's mind-altered state inspired him to drop into graduate school in pharmacology, landing him right back on the academic track his parents had wished for him.

Today, Sanchez-Ramos is a clinical neurologist who's been studying neurodegenerative disorders for more than 30 years. Slim and youthful, his dark hair streaked with gray, you can still see hints of the Latin playboy he once was. He delights in regaling visitors with tales of his youthful adventures. And he brings the same exuberance to his work.

Although research on psychedelics still hovers on the fringe of social acceptance, Sanchez-Ramos has never yielded to popular sentiment. Instead, the artist-turned-scientist has aggressively pushed for the study of illegal drugs, hopping to force regulatory agencies to acknowledge the the million suffering from neurodegenerative diseases deserve every chance at a cure. "Our whole drug policy is fundamentally mistaken in that it tries to ascribe good or bad qualities to the drugs themselves and ignores the relationship people have with these drugs," says Rick Doblin, one of Sanchez-Ramos's colleagues and the founder of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. It's not the drug that matters -it's how it's used.

BORN IN A LAB IN 1938, LSD was first prescribed in the 1950s to treat psychiatric disorders. Doctors became interested in LSD because of its chemical similarity to serotonin, one of the neurotransmitters linked to anxiety and depression. Serotonin molecules work by pairing with receptors in the brain to regulate mood. But when LSD bonds to those same receptors, it disrupts the tightly-controlled communications system.

"LSD is like a chemical microscope that allows you to amplify signals that don't normally come into everyday consciousness," Sanchez-Ramos explains. Initially, doctors and academics were incredibly optimistic about LSD's clinical value. Between 1950 and 1965, more than 1,000 research papers were published on the therapeutic benefits of LSD. A California radiologist named Herman Hartman teamed up with psychiatrist Arthur Chandler to set up the Psychiatric Institute of Beverly Hills, charging $100 a pop for acid-augmented sessions. At its peak, treatment rooms were crowded with Hollywood luminaries like Cary Grant and Esther Williams. Canadian scientists were equally enamored with the drug. In the late 1950s, researchers gave LSD to World War II veterans who were chronic alcoholics; when they followed up one year later, they found that a staggering 55 percent were still sober.

But as people began experimenting outside the lab and LSD entered the mainstream, a culture war ignited. Stories of horrific trips, temporary psychosis, and flashbacks became commonplace. Hysteria was further stoked by the antics of Timothy Leary, a Harvard psychology professor who was fired in 1963 for his experiments with psychedelics. As the government clamped down, the lingering stigma associated with LSD would hamper its scientific study for the next 40 years.

vToday, it isn't just LSD that Sanchez-Ramos is interested in. He believe its siblings- 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy); psilocybin (magic mushrooms); mescaline (peyote); and dimethyltryptamine (ayahuasca) -hold untapped medical benefits. As he told the New York Times, "You have to take this out of the realm of mythology. A drug that is taboo may be extremely useful. But if it's taboo, you'll never find out."

Currently, most psychedelics are illegal, classified by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency as Schedule I substances with "no medicinal value." This makes getting federal funding and the drugs needed for trial studies virtually impossible. But through the efforts of a handful of scientists -including Sanchez-Ramos- research into psychedelics is experiencing a budding renaissance. Today, a growing number of labs all over the world are exploring the use of such drugs to treat tough-to-combat diseases like cluster headaches, alcoholism, post traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety. But Sanchez-Ramos is primarily concerned with a different pathology.

WHEN SANCHEZ-RAMOS began his graduate studies in neuropharmacology at the University of Chicago, opportunities to analyze LSD's effects on the brain in a scientific setting were few and far between. Instead, he focused his attentions on opiates and addiction.

In 1982, there were several cases of drug addicts who had injected a street drug called China White, a contaminated homemade form of the high-dosage pain medication Demerol. The addicts showed signs of early-onset Parkinson's disease. This fascinated Sanchez-Ramos. The culprit, it seems, was a chemical compound in the concoction that destroys dopamine neurons in the brain -just like Parkinson's. In fact, Parkinson's patients' characteristic muscle tremors stem from a drop in dopamine, a neurotransmitter that's necessary for muscle function. As Sanchez-Ramos dug further into the research, he realized that roughly 25 percent of Parkinson's patients experience hallucinations as a side effect of their medication. Was there a connection between psychedelics and the kinds of drugs used to treat Parkinson's?

Intrigued, he decided to leave pharmacology for clinical neurology. In 1990 he stumbled upon the decades-old work of a German pharmacologist Named Louis Lewin, who had become fascinated by the South American ceremonial brew ayahuasca in the 1920s. In the spirit of scientific study, Lewin had ingested the drug and found that he didn't experience the usual hallucinations or altered states of perception, because the psychoactive compound (DMT) was absent. Rather, he felt strong and vigorous, with an increased appetite and improved motor control. Lewin concluded that a compound he called banisterine, found in ayahuasca, might be an excellent treatment for Parkinson's.

What piqued Sanchez-Ramos's interest was the fact that in the 1950s, years after Lewin's studies, banisterine was found to be a monoamine oxidase (MAO). MAOs are a class of drugs used widely to stave off the most debilitating effects of Parkinson's by boosting dopamine levels. But their effectiveness decreases over time. In 2000, Sanchez-Ramos and several other scientists conducted their own rigorously controlled study on banisterine as a potential treatment. Because of legal restrictions in the United States, they set up shop in Ecuador. Like Lewin, they found the drug improved motor function in those suffering from Parkinson's, even after a single dose. (There were also some nasty side effects -namely, nausea and vomiting. At ayahuasca ceremonies, participants are often advised to bring a bucket.)

vBut regulatory roadblocks stalled the research, and Sanchez-Ramos soon found himself looking for Parkinson's treatments in other forms. He began collaborating on a clinical study led by Deborah Mash at the University of Miami for the use of a lesser-known psychoactive, ibogaine, to treat drug addiction. Derived from the root bark of the African shrub called Tabernathe iboga, ibogaine had been popular in 19th century Paris as a diet drug. In 1962, a 19-year-old junkie named Howard Lotsof scored some ibogaine and noticed an unusual effect: He no longer craved his usual bit of heroin, nor did he experience any withdrawal symptoms. He became a powerful advocate, convincing the National Institute on Drug Abuse to undertake an ibogaine research project. A number of studies have since borne out Lotsof's experience: Ibogaine blocks cravings and alleviates withdrawal symptoms for many drugs, especially opiates.

When the FDA killed the Miami study after another research group found that ibogaine destroyed neurons in rats brains, Mash set up a clinic to treat addicts and alcoholic in St. Kitts, where the drug is legal. Today, her clinical trials are on pace for eventual FDA approval. There is also preliminary evidence from other studies that ibogaine, as Sanchez-Ramos hoped, might actually improve the function of the remaining dopamine neurons in Parkinson's patients. In the end, ibogaine could turn out to be the magic bullet -the psychedelic treatment for Parkinson's that Sanchez-Ramos had spent his career hunting.

DESPITE HIS FORAYS into psychedelics, Sanchez-Ramos's best-known contribution to medicine is the development of a method for repairing damaged neurons. His process uses bone marrow cells rather than the more controversial embryonic stem cells. And while it isn't yet possible to harvest the bone marrow cells in sufficiently large quantities for practical treatment, Sanchez-Ramos's discoveries remain promising. With a half-million plus Americans already affected by parkinson's and baby boomers hitting the average onset age of 60, Sanchez-Ramos expects his studies will help lay the groundwork for future solutions. Now approaching 67, he's scheduled to retire next year. At least, technically. The scientist still plans to keep his hand in psychedelic research, hoping to study how psilocybin impacts cognition and the regenerative neurons of the brain. He attended Burning Man this past year, as part of a medical team organized to treat revelers experiencing bad trips. He's working on a picaresque novel based in part on his own globe-trotting adventures. And his most recent contribution to the fight against his longtime nemesis? A series of limited-edition prints called "Neon Neurons." The artworks, which were inspired by the branching patterns of neurons and their dendrites, were featured at a recent exhibit to benefit the Parkinson's Research Foundation. If science can't defeat Parkinson's on its own, Sanchez-Ramos is happy to have his art share the load.

Iceland Tests Meat Pies for Horsemeat, Finds No Meat of Any Kind

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 11:00 PM PST

horsemeat

Go ahead and swallow the red pill. You'll find that your whole life--or at least everything important in it--has been a lie:

When officials in Iceland began hearing about horsemeat being secreted into beef products around Europe, they decided to run tests to ensure the same thing wasn't happening in Iceland.

Icelandic meat inspector Kjartan Hreinsson says his team didn't find any horsemeat, but one brand of locally produced beef pie left it stumped: it contained no meat at all. [...]

Hreinsson said it appeared to be some kind of vegetable matter. He said the mystery pie was traced to a firm in western Iceland and the case had been handed to municipal authorities.

P.S. So far, Alex has not explicitly stated that NeatoShop t-shirts contain no horsemeat. Just putting that out there.

This is the first of four videos for the cat food company. I will be thoroughly disappointed if Henri ends it as a happy, excited cat due to Friskies catfood. -via Blame It On The Voices

King Kong Turns 80

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 05:00 PM PST

The movie King Kong premiered 80 years ago today at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

Though ticket prices ranged from 35 to 75 cents, King Kong went on to gross a then-whopping $89,931 over the next four days in New York City alone. Not bad for a movie released at the rock-bottom of the Great Depression! Since then, the simian celebrity has (among other things) starred in two remakes, battled Godzilla, and even worked as a “spokes-primate” for Volkswagen.

But it’s the original picture that’s left the biggest influence on the motion picture industry, a movie that opened the door for every special-effects film from The Wizard of Oz to The Lord of the Rings.

Mental_floss has a list of ten fascinating facts about the 1933 film King Kong. Link

9 Ways Dr. Seuss was A Secret Badass

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 03:00 PM PST

vToday is the 109th anniversary of the birth of Theodor Geisel, who we know as Dr. Seuss. In honor of the occasion, how about a list of facts you might not know about Dr. Seuss -but you should.

5. He once used the pen name Rosetta Stone. And he did not teach you to speak Portuguese in three months.

6. He's widely credited with coining the word "nerd" in his 1950 book If I Ran The Zoo.

7. He was an Oscar winner. Not all of the big screen adaptations of his works were so acclaimed (sorry, Cat In The Hat), but his early days of film were filled with critical darlings. His documentary films Hitler Lives and Design For Death won Academy Awards in 1946 and 1947, and his cartoon short Gerald McBoing Boing won an Oscar in 1951.

You can read the rest at Hollywood. Number 9 has to be my favorite. Link -via Digg

Poo as Radiation Shielding

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 12:00 PM PST

Bazillionaire Dennis Tito's Inspiration Mars mission to send a man and a woman to the Red Planet has got 99 problems, but radiation from cosmic rays ain't one. Why? Because it's just been solved ... by poo.

... their greatest health risk comes from exposure to the radiation from cosmic rays. The solution? Line the spacecraft's walls with water, food and their own faeces.

"It's a little queasy sounding, but there's no place for that material to go, and it makes great radiation shielding," says Taber MacCallum, a member of the team funded by multimillionaire Dennis Tito, who announced the audacious plan earlier this week.

McCallum told New Scientist that solid and liquid human waste products would get put into bags and used as a radiation shield – as well as being dehydrated so that any water can be recycled for drinking. "Dehydrate them as much as possible, because we need to get the water back," he said. "Those solid waste products get put into a bag, put right back against the wall."

Abraham Lincoln Wrote Poetry

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 07:00 AM PST

Lincoln

Like everything else he took to, Abraham Lincoln was a self-trained as a poet. He started at the task during boyhood, often using verse for satirical purposes. Here, however, is a selection from his more somber 1846 piece "My Child-Hood Home I See Again":

My child-hood home I see again,
And gladden with the view;
And still as mem'ries crowd my brain,
There's sadness in it too--
O memory! thou mid-way world
'Twixt Earth and Paradise;
Where things decayed, and loved ones lost
In dreamy shadows rise--
And freed from all that's gross or vile,
Seem hallowed, pure, and bright,
Like scenes in some enchanted isle,
All bathed in liquid light--

His last known poem was written on July19, 1863, after Union forces repelled a Southern invasion. Lincoln wrote it in the voice of General Robert E. Lee:

Gen. Lee’s invasion of the North written by himself—
In eighteen sixty three, with pomp,
and mighty swell,
Me and Jeff’s Confederacy, went
forth to sack Phil-del,
The Yankees they got arter us, and
giv us particular hell,
And we skedaddled back again,
And didn’t sack Phil-del.

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 06:00 AM PST

They say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. The lion part is correct, at least where I live, as we've had snow and high winds. It's going to be an eventful month, as we have Daylight Saving Time beginning in a week, then St. Patricks Day, the vernal equinox (and not a moment too soon), Passover, and Easter. Speaking of holidays, Alex did what he said he'd do, and gathered all the NeatoShop St. Patricks Day clothing, accessories, and gift items into one place. I guess you could call it the St. Patricks Day Shop. And all the Easter items are easy to find in one place, too! Meanwhile, take a minute to catch up on what you may have missed this week at Neatorama.

Eddie Deezen told us A Few Things You May Not Know About Seth MacFarlane.

Over at the Spotlight blog, we saw Jewel of the Universe, the fanciest world map you've ever seen.

The Annals of Improbable Research gave us Biology of the Family Chiaceae (Chia Pets).

Death on the Mississippi was the story of the worst maritime disaster in U.S. history, from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader.

And mental_floss magazine gave us A Long, Strange Trip, about research into the medicinal value of psychedelic drugs.

We also saw More of Ol' Jay's Brainteasers, a bonus from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader.

vIn this week's What Is It? game, the mystery object is a fly fisherman's line stripping basket. In fly casting, there is a lot of loose line, and one of these baskets on your waist holds the extra line and keep it from getting tangled. Ankerwas the first with the correct answer, and wins a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! The funniest answer came from Kevin George, who said, "Early combination soap dish and ashtray. Later models included a cocktail umbrella to keep the cigarette from going out." I guess that would be necessary if you're going to smoke in the shower! So he also wins a t-shirt from the NeatoShop. Find the answers to all the mystery items of the week at the What Is It? blog.

The post that got the most comments this week were Man Commits a Crime to Get Healthcare
which tied with Is It Possible to Be Too Beautiful? followed by Why Atheists Need A Temple.

vThe comment of the week came in the V-shaped toaster post, when Joseph Francis reacted to the spreading knife (shown): "I hated that knife, but every time I tried to throw it away it kept coming back to me." Ha!

This week's stories that were viewed the most were Three Exotic Necktie Knots to Try: The Eldredge Knot, The Trinity Knot, and The Cape Knot, followed by Bed Bath & Beyond's Stack of Towels is a DAMNED LIE! and Death on the Mississippi. And even though it was a story from over a week ago, Medieval Manuscript Peed on by a Cat went viral and was read enough to have made second for this week, too.

Usability tip of the week: You can suggest items for inclusion at Neatorama by emailing tips@neatorama.com and we really appreciate it, even if we don't use it. Really! However, if you see the item without a thank you, or credit to someone else, it's because we were already working on it or have it in the pipeline. Don't let that discourage you -we can use all the help we can get in finding neat links to share!

When you get caught up on what's here at Neatorama, go see what's happening at Facebook and Twitter, where we put extra stuff for those who care to follow. Tell your friends to follow us on Pinterest, also! And mobile users: Flipboard makes it easy to keep up with Neatorama. Oh yeah -look for Neatorama in Instagram, too!
